  1. I think the major restoration will take some time(So Andy is pretty safe) I have some other vehicles ahead in the line . Initial plans are to get it running and moving under its own steam . I may then rally it for a couple of seasons as is whilst I try and collect some bits e.g. track box and front and rear tow springs .

A very wise plan. Just out of interest, in which area did your Pioneer last work........ I've been trying to make out the lettering on the top front of the cab. Cheers.

  2. I think you were very fortunate indeed to find an original windscreen at such a bargain price. Have you had a chance to road test the new fan arrangement rather than just check it's suitability as a a hair dryer ? More pix please when you have the time. Cheers.

  3. Don't bother asking if this bit, or that bit, is a available because the answer will be no. In fact, my friend who took these photographs recently and passed them on to me said he would have left without his nuts if the owner had found him in there. These pix were taken in Somerset where, as you know, all the best lorries are. It's a pity, it would make an idea next project for Simon what with him having made such a superb job of SFF 142.

  4. Simon, thank you for this wonderful report. I can see you all had a really enjoyable weekend and your Militant looks absolutely the Dog's Whiskers. Have I been in a time warp or something ? The last time I saw any pictures of your Milly it was still in bits and now you're showing it. You've been working really hard over the past few months to have got such an impressive result. A fantastic looking, and very rare, AEC.

  5. I discover with enthusiasm your forum. while waiting to be able has my turn to make revive a scammell pioneer, j' will like to assemble a model in kit. J' make a small round in the shop in France and I have n' in did not find, you can m' to indicate a shop on Londre or I could find some and order by Internet.

    Cordially Stephane

Stephane, may I suggest this model ? It is not the breakdown type but it would be possible to slightly shorten the wheelbase and build a tiny replica of the wooden lockers using matchsticks.

Alternatively, I did once see a wonderful model of a Scammell Pioneer made entirely from matchsticks and then placed in a bottle. (Like a ship in a bottle) I believe the recovery crane was pulled into final upright position by attaching and pulling a thread through opening of the bottle. Please see link below. Does anyone else have any other suggestions for Stephane ?

  6. Exist t' it of the books on l' history of the Scammells mark, and or then I to find them? I am also in the technical search of review and specifications to learn the techniques from constructions of this truck.

I've recently had a further exchange of emails with Stephane and, thanks to Babe Fish, he has said he's interested in buying an Explorer or, a recovery Pioneer, in need of restoration. Does anyone know of one for sale ? If so, contact Stephane.

  7. Often wondered. From personal experience they usually fit into one of these categories:

    1. Going to do something with it one day. This may be genuine and most of us have a pending file.

    2. Think it is worth a fortune. Given the number of people who have made enquiries the thing must be worth a lot of money. I've never looked at what a good one sells for or how many there are but I'm pretty sure that it'smy pension.

    3. The p*ssed off brigade. This one is surprisingly common. Mostly they are sick to the back teeth of people coming and asking to sell it they've just decided to let it rot into the weeds. There is a sub-classification in this group of those who are sick to the back teeth of people offering to buy it then delivering a long list of reasons why it is worthless and not particularly special. Unfortunately the prospective seller does know something about the vehicle and does know what they sell for and they get to the point that they decide to just let it rot into the weeds.

I think you've summed it up very well.

  8. How do you post photos on here?

    Dennis and George,

I use 'photobucket' but there is also 'tinypix' and no doubt other means as well. Opening an account with 'photobucket' or 'tinypix' is free and their site should explain how to upload pictures from your computer's 'photo library. Once uploaded to these sites you can edit, or resize, your 'photos so that they are suitable for posting on notice boards or forums. If you get stuck, start a thread in "Other Chatter" appealing for advice. This has question come up before but I couldn't find anything when I searched the forum. :(

Break out dem pix we want to see them!!!!!

  9. G'day All, I haven't a clue as to how to post pix, but here is a link showing all 7 of my restored ex military Land Rovers cheers Dennis

What a wonderful parade ! Thank you very much for posting the link. I can imagine the hard work that went into making this Land Rover extravaganza possible and, also, it's nice to see all your LR's have their headlights in the correct position. It seems to me that one can directly trace when "things started going wrong in the world" from when Land Rover moved the headlights outboard. Here's a picture of my one taken yesterday in deepest Somerset. Looking forward to seeing a few pix of your fleet posted on here when you have the time. Thanks.

  10. A few days ago, I received a PM from Stephane written in his exquisite Frenglish and assumed it was one of our more playful forum regulars having a go at winding me up. I couldn't see why a new French forum member, if that was who it was, would chose to PM me. Why me ? Thinking it was someone having a laugh, I replied on this thread to Stephane's PM by leaving the post with a picture of the Scammell climbing the Eiffel Tower.

Well, since then I've received further emails from Stephane and I'm still not entirely sure what it is that he would like to know. I think, but I'm not certain, that he would like to buy a Pioneer or, at least, find out how much one might cost. Would someone with good French like to contact Stephane and then post on this, or another, thread what Stephane would like to know and how we could best help him.

    :tup::

  11. As you can see from the tax disc this Pioneer hasn't moved since 1995. Over the years a number of people have tried to buy it but the owner is reluctant to part with it. Yesterday, a good friend of mine was firmly told it is "not for sale". I've been asked not to reveal where it is located. Here's a few pix.

  12. After i'm wanted a old Scammell.

I think an old Scammell would be an ideal vehicle for you as the multi-fuel Gardner engine will run very well on red wine straight from the bottle. You may also know that the standard issue French beret is a perfect fit as a headlight cover on these early Scammells. Just out of interest, did the modified Scammell Pioneer that scaled the Eiffel Tower 1938 survive into preservation ?

By the way, did you ever teach written English in the British Comprehensive School system ? There's something about your style of writing that would be very familiar to anyone who has had the good fortune to be a student at one of these illustrious establishments.
