  1. Came across this pic on the 7 SQN RCT group on facebook. No association with pic taker.

The caption for the pic says Vehicle park Antrim N.I 1977

Thank you very much for posting this wonderful photograph. A Militant tipper is top of my list of desirable lorries and the tipper is one of the rarest Militant Mk 1 variants in preservation. The 6 X 4 in the 'photo was about 20 years old when this picture was taken. I wonder if it survived.

  2. but I want a small Military vehicle to play with before I die.

What great excuse could I come up with, so that she can't refuse?

Wanting to do something before one dies is pretty persuasive in itself. What vehicle will you be acquiring ?

  3. I ride a BSA WM20 of 1940 vintage (although the engine is a '43) the first military vehicle I have owned.

Hey Ewok, I keep reminding everyone on here that I can remember that, back in the 1960's, Pride and Clark in Brixton, London were selling these wonderful WM20's brand new, in wooden crates, for £25. Yes, I'm that old. Welcome to the forum. It would be nice to see some pix of your BSA sometime. Cheers.

  4. Tried to buy this yesterday! £5k if anyone has deeper pockets than me, nice old truck with a leyland 680

As we all know, some people are specifically looking for the challenge of a restoration project and wouldn't be interested in buying the same type of vehicle, in restored condition, even if they could easily afford to buy one. These 'restorer' types may well be prepared to pay over the odds for a lorry that's either very original or, at least, not too badly butchered if they feel it has the right potential. This Explorer, from what can be seen from the photographs, looks as though it would provide many happy hours with the wire brush. If you're 50, with £50,000 in the Bank, and have always wanted to restore an Explorer, 5,000 quid might sound affordable.

  5. What I struggle to understand is the need to double declutch on the way up if there is a clutch stop. Surely the clutch stop does the work of slowing the gearbox input shaft for you without needing to wait for the engine to slow down?

Try adjusting/disconnecting the clutch stop off it's drum and see whether it makes much difference. When 'Professor' Johnny Squirrell, a highly experienced ex heavy haulage driver, drove my Scammell he never bothered with the clutch at all once the lorry was rolling. He just did it all by ear and by judging the engine/road speed. I never heard him crunch any gear while using what I called the 'Squirrell' method.

As regards anyone mastering a crash gearbox, my time spent running a HGV school in London many years ago (Bedford TK's !) is that all advice and demonstration wasted. We have to get in the driving seat and find out by our mistakes.

  6. Ted, you rotter ! Fancy not putting these wonderful photographs on the forum before now. Seriously, thank you for sharing them. It makes me wonder what other treasures you have hidden away.

That Commer certainly doesn't look compliant with the latest Euroweasle thinking on HGV rear view mirrors. Ted, can you see enough of the wing section on the Commer's trailer to make a guess at what type of aircraft it might be ? Thanks.

  7. Does any one have any original photos of Vehicles in RAF service ?

I am looking for details of the painting of the RAF Number and the Cockade.

Ideally any trucks, but what ever you have.

    Jules

You may wish to get in touch with forum member Ted Angus who is very knowledgeable about RAF vehicles.

  8. I must say just walking out the door looking at them brings me joy.

I know just what you are saying. I feel the same way about what I've got parked outside my door. You've got some very fine vehicles there and I look forward to seeing, and hearing, more about them. Those are mean chains on the wheels ! I needed some like that a few weeks ago when this 'photo was taken.

  9. Very nice standard Chorehorse Generator produced in various voltages from WW2 untill the 1960's.

I assume you do not have a source for more?

I just have this one that I've owned for around 10 years. It maybe heading for eBay, along with another WD generator, to help pay for the new lorry den I'm hoping to build later this year. If I do decide to sell it I'll let you know. Thank you for you comment.
