Thornycroft engineering, Scammell engineering, Thornycroft engineering, no contest......(AEC engineering anytime!!)

Yes sanity is returning, I sold my Explorer so I don't need this any longer, you can't get more sanity than that.....
-
but with only 350 bhp dont you think she will be a tad underpowered...would love that truck...
Antar only had 300 BHP for 140 GTW, 350 BHP seems like more than enough...

almost sure this has been covered before but i cant find it i was wondering if there is rhyme or reason to the numbering ie my 1951 explorer was 02 bd 10 from the reg can you say its a 51 from that and does the 02 or 10 mean anything when did the system start and might that have been with AA ?
thanks andy

Or look on the Matador Gallery on this Forum?
If any O854, 854 pictures I have posted there are of any interest, I can probaly supply higher resolution scans of some of these. (I am not doing the whole lot!!!)
Or go to East Kirkby and take your own photos???

Yes misread title, need glasses all the time now post deleted...

That's youtubes lookout, they give permission to use the material, it's they that have to confirm copyright, the material doesn't leave their website, it is still directly linked & can be pulled by them at anytime.
Back on topic now please..
Okay, thanks, just checking a grey area in my mind....

Youtube give copyright permission to use material on their website by allowing embedding, if the poster does not want the material the leave youtubes website embedding can be blocked.
That's why youtube give embedding & sharing codes.
Yes that is the situation if youtube or the person uploading hold copyright, but I can't see how that relates to copyrighted material, where the original holder never gave permission for uploading, material that even youtube says should not be uploaded to their site.....
-
You should contact the REME Museum & tell them then, it is they who posted the films on youtube.
I bought the videos when they came out and I am sure they clain to be copyrighted material...
In this sort of instance I thought a link to another site where the material was to be found was acceptable but actually posting the footage was a no no....Sorry if I have got it wrong....
Video I bought says Army Cinematography Services film in association with Vintage Commercial Vehicles Magazine. Copyright, all rights preserved, unauthorised publication..copying ... broadcasting of this program are strictly prohibited and in breach of copyright....
That is why I have never put clips onto the board.....

Sherman Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle
A short film showing a Scammell Pioneer Tractor Heavy Heavy Breakdown 6x4 recovering a Churchill tank
I thought the Army Kinematography Unit films were copyrighted? Could be wrong....

What are the vehicles on the Bridge in a bridge too far? There is one that is knocked out which looks like a spartan with exttra superstructure added. Would like to know what they did use for all the vehilces?
http://www.imcdb.org/movie.php?id=75784
amongst other vehicles in this film is an AMX 13 but see link above for full list of those identified so far
But the tank on a bridge you refer to could be a Leopard 1 which I believe did cross a bridge.

Hi Welcome, we love pictures here, have you any shots of your Project? Mike

Doesn't look like D Day to me. D Day+1, D Day+2, D Day+3 maybe (might prove to be wrong on this one, but everything just looks too relaxed.

Never has an aircraft looked so right, when it started out as something different. The stretch in the wings to add two extra engines looks far better than the original Manchester.
It was a wonderful aircraft to fly, it was never done but there are many accounts by test pilots etc, in which they say they just wished they had clearance to do a barrel roll because everyone thought it was possible.
The only RAF heavy not to have a co-pilot, indeed no flight tuition was given to the flight engineer, who it was expected would be able to fly it , get it home and land it, should the pilot be killed or seriously wounded.
And of course, like the spitfire was capable of further development. Essentially the York and the Lincoln retained much of the Lanc.
And ultimately able to loft a ten ton bomb.

And the Germans believed this??

hi fella's
here's another explorer waiting for a bit of tlc, this one is on nelson green's airfield in lincolnshire. even if you didn't want the scammell it would be a good place to visit, i reckon there must have been over 500 pieces of old plant and military vehicles there, a really interesting place.
the explorer looked very sound mechanically but the bodywork is as bad as it looks, incidentally if you do decide to have a punt at it the owner steve green isn't daft and won't let it go for peanuts but you might be able get a good deal out of him if you catch him on a good day.

I have a couple of bottles that will sort that out in a trice, (one is black, the other is maroon)

There are a couple in preservation sporting this style of lamp arrangement, always assumed it was a civvy mod, but maybe not..
In Civvy life it is sometimes a mod used when working a snowplough...

I bought RAF Blue Grey (633) from a reputable paint supplier. I bought two tins at the same time and they were completely different colours, They had left one of the "shots" out of one tin.
Don't assume the paint you got is the correct shade.

And I suggest that they should check out the " help identify vehicle" section there and if they know of a vehicle out of place and it is not already listed for a given movie they should post it on the IMCDB site.
I spent three evenings doing that and could only give a possible on one vehicle!
Is some sanity returning?

Every conversion is likely to be unique because of the wide variety of engines and where they are dropped into the frame.
The main trouble is the lack of room at the front of the gearbox, where the gear lever turret casting is very close to the input shaft.
I have seen some Explorers running on Land Rover couplings but this seems lunacy to me,, they may be small enough to fit, but I don't fancy being 150 miles from home, with a coupling designed for 50 to 90 BHP having to transmit 305 BHP at far lower revs, hence far higher torque.
The best option is stay original and since a Scammell Register man has new build couplings, and all the drawing jigs, moulds etc, to repeat production runs, I cannot see why some people are taking such risk of being stranded miles from home.
Anything is possible, but rubber couplings are a far better engineering solution than Hardy Spicer type joints.
I have looked at AEC drive shaft couplings since I reckon they also provide a better answer than Hardy Spicer types.
