  2. Indeed, we were "Somewhere in France" yesterday... Thanks for a very nice day chaps! I really enjoyed it! Jan
  3. I agree Steve... But this one (the YouTube bike) is a bitza! It has been advertised on the internet several times, and although I asked the seller for extra pictures and the frame and engine numbers of this motorcycle, all I ever got was a ridiculously high price (9000 Dollar), no pictures, no numbers... If rebuilt in civvy trim this could be a very nice pre war motorcycle, but it is by no means a WD/L. The front hub is different, the gearbox is different, and if I would have better pictures I'm sure I would find a lot more non WD parts! Jan

    Welbike

Hi Steve, Hey, I'd never noticed that detail before! This is a contract S/1945 Flea, later contracts (S/6602 and S/7112) had their contract plates riveted to the rear mudguard, as the following pictures show: More useless information about these contract plates: ) - All "C" prefix contracts had a copper plate, all "S" prefix contracts had a steel contract plate. - One exception: the Welbike contract S/1946 is an "S" prefix contract with a copper contract plate. - This S/1946 contract plate is slightly shorter than the other copper contract plates... 7. Hi Centurion, As Radek has already explained, I am keeping a register of the WD Royal Enfields. With the data from this register, and with the help of many knowledgeable people, I have also made a 60 plus pages Report on the WD/CO. I can send you a copy if you let me know your email address. Kind regards, Jan (rewdco) wd.register@gmail.com PS It would of course be nice if your bike could also be added to the register!
  8. Salve Stefano, I guess that under the broad arrow you'll also find a letter M and a number, am I correct? If so, could you tell me what number that is please? I am compiling a list with these numbers, each inspector (who put this stamp on the bike) had a unique number. It looks as if the inspectors stayed at a factory for a limited period of time. This stamp can be useful for dating a certain motorcycle! Thanks for your help, Jan
  9. Hi chaps, I guess you all know the table with the contract numbers, frame numbers, census numbers, … for the Royal Enfield WD/CO models. This list is on the internet on this website: http://aachen.heimat.de/leute/nico/british/wd-co.htm . It is also in the Orchard and Madden book “British Forces Motorcycles”. However, due to the strange numbering system used by Royal Enfield, it looks as if there are some “anachronisms” in this list. For instance, the second contract (frame numbers 6001 - 11000) wasn’t made between the first (frame numbers 1001 - 6000) and the third contract (frame numbers 11001 - 14000), but was made at the end of the war, hence the type 2 frame where the first and third contract bikes have a type 1 frame… It looks as if nobody really knows exactly in which order and to which specification the WD/CO’s were made. The dates in these lists are very confusing. O&M talk about a demand date, a contract date, a delivery date, a parts list date, and to add to the confusion, not all of these dates have been filled in… In the internet article, there is only one date, which does not always coorespond with the O&M dates... In order to fill in these gaps, I started a “register” for the WD/CO. With pictures and details of the surviving motorcycles, I hope to find out more about the production of these motorcycles throughout the war. But here I need your help: If you do have a complete WD/CO, or just a frame or an engine, would you be so kind to send me the following informations: - a picture of the actual motorcycle - frame number, engine number - a picture and / or details of other numbers or markings which may have been stamped on the engine - the factory dispatch date which you can find on the dating certificate from the Royal Enfield Owners Club (for those who have this certificate) You can mail this information to: wd.register@gmail.com Thanks in anticipation for your much appreciated help! Markings

Hi Graham, Rich Payne told me about this thread. I have indeed started a research about the Royal Enfield WD/CO motorcycles. To find out more about the numbers which can be found on a typical WD/CO engine, I started a register for these bikes, and with this register, a lot became clear! I have put all this information in what I call a "report". This can be sent to you if you let me know your email address. It would also be nice if I could include your motorcycle in my register!
