  1. Have now sorted out 99% of my electrical problems......wired the batteries the correct way round..... also replaced the alternator which had blown as a consequence of the reverse polarity !

Did not notice at first as the truck started no problem, lights worked, indicators operated but did not flash, dash was dead so did not see the fact it was no longer charging, only when I got the test meter out did I find it. A friend had wired the batteries an a new battery isolator for me in the rush to get it moved from the storage facility which was shortly due to close.

What did the British Army use this type of trailer for ?.

They did not use that trailer, it used to belong to a friend of mine who made it look like a military trailer.

  3. Wouldent mind a wrecker version preferable one with a diesel transplant, but they seem to be quite rare?, or am I wrong.

    bill.

Quite rare now and difficult to convert. Big diesel, say RR Eagle or Cummins 12 / 14 litre too long for engine bay so a few done with extended chassis and bonnet. Shorter engines like V8 Perkins or V8 Cummins not enough torque and power to comfortably get the 24 tonnes and 6x6 transmission rolling.

I had a very nice one with Perkins V8 (naturally aspirated) once suspend towed a Scammell Explorer from Preston to Stockport, at one point on the M6 south of Preston I was down to 4mph.....really scary, watching rearview mirror ready to dive onto hard shoulder as normal trucks approaching at 56mph !

  4. John I plan to be there. My travel distance is quite closer only 5 driving hours. I have an Abbot SPG I imported last year from the UK. look forward to seeing whats there and what condition its in. I just purchased a M1070 HET to pull the Abbot around with. I'm now looking for a M747 trailer to put it on. The Abbot at the auction looks better than the one I have. I wouldn't mind picking it up to use in parades and veterans events. It is great to take to schools and let the kids get inside. Actually at most auctions there's crazy people or auction fever that drives up the price. Oh wait a minute, I said Crazy people. We might fit into That group. :-D. Cheers Rick. Frankly Id Like to come home with all the British stuff but I haven't won the Lottery yet!!!!

    Rick,

Hope to meet up with you there, would also like to see your HET, I have its predecessor the M746 HET here in the UK.

I know there are 4 x M747 trailers for sale at Sam Winer Motors, Akron, Ohio. Here is a picture of them last week.M747 Trailers.jpg

  5. A Lorry with a 8 ton HIAB will do the Job, moved a Sultan Sabre and Samson this way with no problems at all.

Do you mean you picked it up to put it on the lorry ? If so you need a far bigger Hiab than 8 tonne, all lorry loader cranes are rated by the capacity at 1metre from the kingpost.

  6. Hi Chieftain Mk4,

(Sorry but as yet you have not posted your name), don't know where you are located but on 2nd & 3rd August 2014 in Heywood, Manchester we have a Tank running day at which there will be 2 Chieftains, 1 Centurion, a number of 430 series and I will be taking either my M578 or CET. You would be very welcome to bring along the Mk4 Chieftain as an exhibit. This event it open to the public with all proceeds going to a local hospice.

There are around 20 acres where the tanks run around all weekend. For pictures of last years event have a look at Heywood Tanks on facebook.

  7. If you look closely at the picture I use in my title you will see a small chieftain(Possibly yours in working condition?) following a real chieftain, the picture was taken at MVEE whereabouts I cannot say for sure as trials were carried out all over the UK.

The picture was taken sometime between 1977 to 1980 as I know the trooper in the chiftain who was stationed there the same time as me.

Whether the model was built by apprentices or as part of a project I cannot remember now, but I do know that apprentices at MVEE did build some items during their apprenticeship.

How about posting your title picture so we can see it better ?

  8. Hi

I bought one of these chargers and the quadlink to regulate between 4 hawker batterys , followed all the instructions and set the charger up , it worked for 2 days and broke ? overheated I guess ? A new one was sent out on warranty and this lasted 3 days and has Broke ?

I don't think the chargers are fit for purpose ?

I notice they are manufactured in China although coming from the states .

I am now using a draper intelligent charger , that's fully vented through the quadlink , so far so good.

Which charger ? Pulsetech ? When I spoke to the guy there about my single channel one failing (which they replaced no problem) he asked if I was running it overnight on 240 volts, which I clearly was. He said if I could it would be better running off a 110 volt supply as overnight sometimes the mains output climbs over 250 volts due to lack of demand on the grid. The charger therefore sometimes blows on the inlet protection. Since fitting a 110v plug and running it through a transformer it has been no problem. I have no connection with the UK suplier, I have recovered a good number of heavily discharged Hawkers with the pulstech.

  9. Does anyone know where I could find a good condition CB300 14X8X7' series aluminum insulated workshop / office or communication trailer with a rear door for sale? Intend on instaling on a DAF LEYLAND T244...any info greatly appreciated! :undecided:

    Try David Crouch.

  10. I guess the auctioneer really does not have any idea regarding the guide prices as they are not particularly experts in this field, but you might have thought that they would have taken advice from the people who worked there, maybe they have been misled by the prices Mr Littfield actually paid for them in the first place ? Was rather pleased at the guide on the M578, but it's only a guide.

I intend being there for the 2 days so it should be interesting to see who is bidding on the day. Anyone else planning on going ?

  11. Okay so i work on the railways as a Traincrew which means i get about a lot on the lovely rail network, and ive been travelling to the lovely south west a lot and i keep seeing a field on the way down there, (and way back) near Cam and Dursley station and theres this field and it looks like whoever has a bit of an off road track around the garden and they have some landies and a CET, well thats all i see when i trundle past every day, cant complain as it what i look forward to on the trip, just wondering if anyone knows more about this?

Also, now the other way, wed just left barrow and only discovered this today but went past a holding and again whoever had a lot of nato green looking lorries, could only make out the crusader which looked in great nick, again if anyone knows more.

    :)

    Seb

Have a look on Google maps and establish location. As previously discussed do not post map on forum for security reasons but it may satisfy your curiosity.

  12. It's all in the weight ! I have used these batteries in a collection I help look after, they are ok when new and properly looked after, however I personally use the original Hawker military ones which are physically the same size but weigh at least 1/2 as much again.
