1. I've never used them, but Hindle Transport have just put a classified up on Milweb, and as they seem to be based in Bolton ...

    Andy

We have used Hindle on numerous occasions, they are very good and professional, it was Hindle who took Rick's Cromwell to W&P this year. Give Craig a call for a price.

  2. Hi folks,

I may need to have a Bedford QL transported from the Midlands to Yorkshire!

Can anyone recommend or know anyone who does this and will I need to remortgage my house to pay for it!!!

    Cheers,

    Mark:cheesy:

Give Craig Keeble a call at Hindle Transport, they have vehicles travelling up and down the country so may be able to do as a backload. Craig has a QL himself so will be interested as well. PM sent with his number.

  3. Has it ever been used?

The way governments waste my tax money........:banghead::angry

They have all been used at some point in their lives, and have all been rebuilt at least twice. Of the 4 in this tender 2 have been rebuilt / class 1 repaired 3 times. A number of CETs served in Gulf war 1 and had a pretty hard time there (so did the crews, trying to keep them running !), most of them seem to have been rebuilt in 1986.

What you see for sale today are CETs rebuilt in 2003/4 at ABRO Bovington and then placed in storage at Ashchurch until about 18 months ago when they were all moved to Withams. There are about 40 more to go yet.

Oh and by the way, in 1976 they cost us £1m each and we bought 144 of them!

  4. Hi all

This is probably best suited to the Aussie con fraternity on this forum.

I need to pick up a brand new Austin Champ chassis from Melbourne and I am in Sydney. I have enquired with a few car carrier companies and most need the vehicle to be driven so they can load it up on the car carrier. Another option is to fly down to Melourne and hire a one way trailer and car. Otherwise only other option is to drive with my own car and trailer from Sydney to Melbourne and back. Hmmmm Any suggestions anyone?

    Thanks

How on earth did you find a 'brand new' Champ chassis ? if must be 40+ years since the last Champs were made. is this the only one or is there more down under.

Seeing as we celebrated the Champ 60th anniversary in 2012 I would think that it is about 55 years since that chassis was made. I agree that it is a very rare spare part to find indeed, even stranger is that it has the two gearbox cover panels with it. Certainly a really nice find !

  5. Evening I know the truck in question, it is an ex Royal Engineers 20 ton ballast tractor, I presume it was purchased off Richard Wilson from Turboventure. At one point in its recent civilian life it belonged to a friend of mine on Oldham, Lancashire. It was built with a Meadows petrol engine but at some point had a Leyland 680 diesel fitted. The rear canopy was added when in the ownership of my friend, to provide covered accommodation during the Normandy 94 tour.

The wide front bumper is not original and was also added during its civilian life, in my opinion it is hideous and should be removed as soon as possible !

I also owned the exact same model for a number of years which had the original petrol engine fitted, when I sold it the new owner also fitted a Leyland 680.

  6. Go for a Chieftain ARRV.

They aren't silly money like the gun tanks.

Far more interesting and at least you can do something useful with them.

Gun tanks! (oh look at me - what a large gun I have)! Yes, but it's pretty useless and it makes working on them a pain!

My ARRV - Two winches, anchor blade, 6 1/2 ton atlas crane and in my humble opinion - more impressive than a gun tank!

One ARRV went for scrap last year (Ex Gulf war too) because the chap couldn't sell it.

And how much was he asking for this serious piece of hardware? A measly £6500.

    Why couldn't he sell it?

Because people get all silly when a tank has a big gun.

Bill, it's not the size - it's what you do with it. lol

Mark I never realised that your Chieftain had a large comms mast mounted on the front LH track guard !

  7. Bill from what I can gather you are a young man with plenty of enthusiasm for military vehicles, my advice to you is to try something a little bit smaller than a Chieftain as a first armoured vehicle.

My recommendation would be a CET from a Withams tender recent results show that they have been fetching around £5-6k plus VAT, a very affordable and technically interesting vehicle with all the manuals available.

Advice is based on 33 years experience playing with green toys, starting with an Austin Champ and now owning a collection of around 8 vehicles including two pieces of tracked armour and helping look after a collection of around 40 including a Chieftain Mk10.

  8. Some pictures of the D/S final drive of our Scorpion, note the stripped bols that were found upon opening the inside case!

PM me if you want a replacement unit.

  9. I thought it might be a touch below par as its a new show next year it will be bigger. The local show in Manchester started off small with only half the hall being full, the following year the hall was full.

And that was cancelled this year due to the massive increase in rent for the weekend.
