  1. As discussed on the telephone Rick, l have added a loader crane on the S26 which has pushed up the unladen weight by about 2 tonnes (including the substantial sub frame). Plus the crane is quite close to the 5th wheel coupling creating a situation where I could only use a narrow neck trailer with it. My plan was my M747 trailer, but that project has stalled a little due to lack of time, as has getting the Seddon Atkinson on the road too !

  2. There was a vehicle such as that in the horde of vehicles at the B & E Boys storage facility that I visited, some kind of story about why it didn't have a gun that was a lot less plausible than the driver training vehicle usage you describe.

Of note, the Land Rover gong past the Abbot also seems to be ex military.

It now has a "dummy" gun, it was at one point described as the Abbot tug, will get a picture of it tomorrow.

  3. Whatever you do do not put Hawker batteries on a big old fashioned charger and try to pump lots of charge into them. You will fry them. It is one of the few ways to kill them. As advised above, get a pulse charger and leave them to cycle for several days each, they may well come back to life. There are several threads about this in this section.

I don't know about Shielders but all the FV430 family have the firewire fire detection system live all the time - not fed through the master switch. It will empty a pair of good batteries in about ten days unless you pull the circuit breakers or physicly disconnect the batteries.

Most of the fire wire systems are made by Graviner, if you find the control box there is 1 screw connector which suppliers the 24v feed, unscrew this connector.

With regards to charging the Hawkers I have a twin output Extreme pulse charger it brings them up really well and you can do them both at the same time.

  4. Cheers that would be good, any information is handy. We are trying to get to the bottom of the production numbers for the Smith, everyone thinks it was 50, an old gentleman who worked for Smith says only 3, and another very knowledgeable gentleman has told me that 50 where ordered and only 12 actually produced. Any thoughts?

I have only ever seen 2 yours and the one on Nelson Greens airfield.

  5. the 35t and 65t business does confuse me to be honest, she is around 61t on the plate.

Nice to know a little more of its history, Dave said he put a new engine in it when he had her.

Looking at the earlier posts in the thread from the lad with the "RoadHaus" crusader the 5.5 ring and pinions seem to be the way to go when I have some time and money!

I sold Roland Remp with the Roadhaus Crusader the crown wheel and pinion sets to give the better road speed, when I sold my Crusader last year I stupidly let the the last set of low ratio sets go with it on the promise of the money being sent on to me, still waiting....I think I will be making a visit soon to get them back.
