  1. Hi Rick...see th eother post on this board...if it holds up to a fuel pump I am sure it will hold up on a carb. Mick
  2. R Cubed, I used Universal Blue for my fuel pump and filler cap....both have been fine. Just make sure you do as it says on teh tube and let it go off a bit before remantling (is that a word?), as it seems to shrink slightly as it goes off (from experience  ) Mick
  3. Thanks Chris, I was worried there may be some reason not to use hammerite, but that makes sourcing a lot easier :-)
  4. As I am taking bits in and out of the interior of my ferret, I thought I may as well sand them and paint them up. What paint do you use for silver interiors? My initial thought was Hammerite, but I suspect its not the right thing to use. Mick
  5. Thanks guys...hopefully it won't be as bad as I first thought
  6. I agree....there are several jobs that you just don't have the time/tools/knowledge to do yourself (myself?). I could spend 2 days doing something that someone with the knowhow and tools may take a couple of hours...well worth the money.
  7. Actually..after thinking about it rather than engaging mouth first...I have taken the new unit apart by removing the body end cap and taking out the levers and handbrake piston. I'm sure it will not be as easy refitting it on the vehicle though
  8. Thanks for the reply Chris. The new unit has the cable attached, and it appears to be attached to the handbrake piston. Do I need to disassemble the new and old units? Thanks, Mick
  9. flippin' heck!! What is the trick to removing the handbrake cable from the right hand rear brake? The adjuster (which comes attached to the new unit) is hidden below the drive shaft and its impossoble to turn a spanner in that space. I have lost some skin on my knuckles and spent an hour trying to remove it...I'm sweaty, stinking and need a beer!! Mick
  10. John....mmmmm..not sure I would agree with you there, your not really my type. Now, the Saladin IS a beauty though :-)
  11. :-) :-) :-) How ironic....gaskets being in good condition is bad luck. Jeeeesss....wheels with runflats are bloody heavy!
  12. John. clang! the penny dropped when I saw the picture against your posts, hey is that you in the front of CMV the other month? I'm two months younger than my Ferret...think the Ferret is doing better than me! Mick
  13. Chris, its OK..the more I look at it the more sense it makes. The tappet units (according the manual) are the bits inside the drum...although going by my bevel/transfer box shennanigans I could mean alomost anything Seems like a pretty cool design for field repairs though...looks like you can replace all teh hydraulics without even taking the wheels off, although in my case that would only be a temporary repair as I guess the brake linings are stuffed in that wheel now.
  14. Chris, you are of course right :-) I'm getting my bevels and transfers mixed up. Looks like Marcus Glen may have some wheel cylinders with cables. Cheers Mick
  15. Chris, are the tappet units in the hydraulic circuit? Is it most likely something amiss with the expander unit? Thanks, Mick
  16. I have a leak in the rear offside brake, there is brake fluid flowing out of the brake drum. From what I can make out, the expander unit is outside the drum? And there is a link to a tappet assembly on the inside of the drum? Is it possible for the hydraulic fluid to leak from the expander into the drum, or am I going crazy? Thanks, Mick
  17. Thanks John, its really coming together now, running tons better. I must come over at some point to see what you think :-) Mick
  18. I missed you guys, I was away on business, and then could not get to the forum since Monday when I came back!!!! well, another little leak springs up :-( I thought it may have been the transfer box after I filled it, but I should have known the fluid was too thin....and it finally clicked when I wiped teh fluid off to see how much it was leaking and all the paint came off!! Any idea where I can get a tappet assembly (wheel cylnder) from? Also, I assume (probably incorrectly knowing me) that I can just use dot3 or dot4 fluid in the system?
  19. Wow...haven't been able to get in for a few days and was worried you guys had disppeared! Site looks crisp and clearer!!
  20. Rick, if you cannot get the real thing, it may be worth giving Pirtek a try, they have tons of hydraulic/fuel hose and fittings, and they appear to have service centres all over the UK. Mick
  21. Thanks Chris, yes, from what I can make out its EP90 in the transfer box, but I want to drain all the fluids over the next couple of weeks so I know where I'm starting from. Just wanted to confirm the SAE30 thing, as there are articles that say use multigrade, others that say only use SAE30.....maybe its easiest/safest to stick with original spec. Just wanted to see if anyone had any real strong views on either. Cheers Mick
  22. I know this has been covered many times, and there seems to be conflicting advice, so would appreciate some real world lub advice. What should I be using in a ferret gearbox? My initial thought is to use SAE30 (I have a Unity motors up the road that does all the mono-grade oils, so no problem sourcing), or do I use multi-grade. I took the filler off the gearbox, and its low on oild, but more worrying there is quite a bit of oil that appears to have turned to a thick grease (caused by mixing oils?). How do I get rid of the deposits before refilling the gearbox (remove the gearbox top plate?). Thanks Mick ps...I feel like a scrounger at the moment...continually coming on here asking for advice!!!!
  23. You guys must be nuts (or very brave). I thought I was adventurous with my little ferret.....is this what happens when you get bitten by the bug!!!
  24. I have never understood how we can expect people to risk their lives for us, for them to be discarded afterwards.....makes my blood boil. signed
  25. I can think of more subtle ways of relieving transmission wind-up!
