  1. It's a US Mark VII SPG - designed and built at the Rock Island Arsenal in 1919.

    Based on a Holt 2.5 ton chassis with a 75mm M1916 gun - 2 vehicles built.

Info from one who knows these things, over on "Landships"

  2. Get a load of this lot!

II International Miliatary Show in Panzer Farm in Chrcynno near Nasielsk (Poland)

Everything from battlefield dig finds (I hope all those mortar bombs are inert!), through chunks of StugIII, Sdkfz 222 (?), T34/85, M8 Grayhounds, BT & T34 turrets, through restored softskins, a few WW2 Russian tanks (T34/85, ISU152 ARV - that's a rare beast), artillery pieces, a RR Meteor engine (Anyone restoring a Comet & needs one?) to modern AFVs & a pretty good Panther replica on a T54 (?) chassis. A Ferret, M4 HST project, etc, etc!

    Just a taster!

  3. Driving home from Smallwood I remembered some months ago hearing about old military planes/helicopters being broken on the site of what was Hixon airfield.

Hercules & a Sea King, I assume they're being dismantled for spares, as there's not a JCB to be seen!

  4. I was re-reading a back issue of CMV, with the Sdkfz Foundation's Stug III.

Noting the comments about the ~28 differences between Alkett & MIAG produced vehicles & even have 3 or 4 mounting brackets for a driver's seat, with only one fitting. What degree of standardisation was there, between British/American AFVs, of the same variant, produced by different factories?

  5. Memorial to a pair of Halifaxes, from 578 Squadron, collided in mid air on the night of the 20/21st July 1944. Crashed with the loss of all 14 crew.

IIRC, recent excavations of the crash site, found a number of live 500lb bombs.

  6. Took the chance to call in yesterday, just in time for one of their Lancaster taxi runs.

Bloody great to be so close to it, that the wingtip passes virtually over my head, as it trundles by and you can feel the vibrations from its Merlins!

Photos taken with a crappy camera on my phone!

540194_10150852552953984_697708983_9622057_1163618100_n.jpgThe various bits of wreckage, come from a Spitfire MkV (IIRC), excavated from a Lincolnshire crash site, a Hampden, from a Swedish mountainside - the cockpit & forward fuselage is being restored, plus a Wellington from a remote Scottish moor.

The bombs are a 12,000lb "Tallboy", with an 8,000lb lightcase bomb behind it.

Can't caption the bigger pictures, but I reckon you can all recognise a Lancaster & link the above info to the right photos!

Plenty other artifacts of all sizes, from more wrecks (P38/F5 Lightnings, He111 etc)
