  1. It's a good basic site, I camp there every year, fed once a day, hottish showers, toilet blocks and beer tent.

    No power hook up tho.

    Yes they allow you to park your modern vehicle on the side grass verges, which mainly taken up with trailers and tow vehicles.

    The other one is the Bilderburg camp site just over the road.

    That's got the lot Inc hook up, clothes washing and drying. The Battle Wheels site doesn't open until the Wednesday afternoon and even then that's still setting up.

    Are you a 're enactors?

    The race to the bridge on the Saturday is a great experience, but hard work on a bike!

    Ginkel Heath on Saturday morning is good too, the vehicles and parachute jump.

    There's normally a drop over the water at Driel on Friday too.

    Lots to do and see, great atmosphere about, loads of 're enactors.

    If I can be of any help just ask. I love the place.

  2. Go to the 'Airborne Battle Wheels Oosterbeek' website.

    From what you have said it is exactly what you are looking for. However they don't allow modern tents or modern campervans on the actual campsite. Some people do attend with modern vans to sleep in and park in the car park, though it is frowned upon. Hope this helps.

  3. Hi guys I was planning to attend the Arnhem events this September 2017 for the 1st time with my camper van & a couple of WW2 bikes.

     

    Question #1 what are the best dates to attend ? for main parades & commemoration etc ?

     

    Question #2 Is there a group I can tag onto that are not 24/7 re-enactors but just enthusiast's that want to ride around and visit places ?

  4. Good luck with your restoration Ian. I served my time as a civilian mechanic 1950-56. We had a very early version of your "tilly" as a runabout. It was vitually identical to your vehicles except that it still had the civilian "waterfall" radiator shell fitted. We constructed a sheet metal upper body to replace the canvas tilt making it warmer and drier!

  5. have you a pic of the old brushes and dimensions, we have a couple of old school auto electricians close by that I youse, if you hove the sizes will ask when passing one evening.

     

     

    22.23mm (0.875in) wide.

    7.15mm (0.281in) thick.

    Don't know the length.

    I would of thought these were easy enough to find but not by part number of the dynamo by the looks.

With driverless cars being in the news again I often wonder if the designers have thought beyond the actual concept and thought much about how humans would actually use them, so here are a few things you might be able to do with a driverless car - or even a driverless ex-military vehicle.

     

    · Drive to the pub in your family car and get completely trashed and then get in the back seat of your car and have a sleep while being driven home.

    · Get your car to take your kids to school and pick them up afterwards, taking the stress out of the school run.

    · Have your car drop you off at the airport, drive home on its own and come and meet you when you get back from your holiday.

    · Have the car drive to the garage on its own for a service and MOT and come back home nicely valeted.

    · Have the car drive round to your cheating ‘Ex’ and have them unload all their own possessions so that you don’t have to see their lying face ever again.

    · Have the car take your mother in law somewhere, infact anywhere but where you live!

    · Perhaps not bother with a driving licence as ‘you’will never need to drive.

    · Sue the car manufacturer if your car ever has an accident.

    · Sue the software designer if your car ever has an accident.

    · Sue the Government in the European Court of Justice on the basis that Car Insurance premiums should be based on the type of car not the person riding in it.

    · If the DVLA sends you a photo of the car together with motorway speeding ticket, then claim no one was driving at the time therefore avoiding any points on your license.

    · Start a taxi firm and not bother to employ any drivers, thus avoiding bad publicity from zero hours contracts or not paying the minimum wage!

    · Send your car on a scenic drive and see the view remotely from the comfort of your own sofa via a dash cam connected to your laptop.

    · Race your driverless car against a friend’s driverless car to a point on the map and view them both remotely from the comfort of your own sofa as above

    · Send your car abroad and have it drive back later with something or someone in the boot about which you know nothing ‘your honour’

  8. I'm sure Frank Brown (IIRC in The Garrison ww2 arty reenactment group) would be able to help, I think he floats around here and on MLU, he does some very tidy canvas work and best of all specialises in british stuff.

     

    Hope you get some relief from your back pain soon, and those parts that were damaged at your sandblaster were recoverable.

  9. Hi guys were will I find the information for dating a QL chassis ?

    My QL chassis number is QLR45600 but the V5c says 1st registered 11:03:1968 which means it needs an MOT (according to the DVLA)

    If I get a dating certificate from the MVT they will amend the V5c and then it will be Tax & MOT exempt as its pre 1960.

    What book or document will the inspector need to find in-order to date it.

    I know the PU8 as we had them come through REME workshops for repairs. The cowling on one of the photos that Clive posted looked the same but I thought the spark plug was in a different position, maybe it was an earlier version. There are still a few turning up but as most that you see drove equipment via a flexy shaft they are of little use.

  11. According to the scans from Clive, the Mk1A has JAP 55 engine, this is a twin cylinder and dates from 1940's, the Mk1B had a Petter PA2 which I am sure was introduced in early 1950's. This leaves the Mk1, which appears to be an air cooled flat twin, but not entirely sure what make. I am sure it is not a Petter PU8 as the spark plugs are in wrong position, this was a wartime engine (there may have been an earlier version?), other flat twins used my military, were Norman, Bradford, Douglas and Coventry Victor, but not sure if it is any of them. The owner of the restored one in blue paint might know.

     

    Hi Richard I've been doing a bit of homework & consensus is that it may of been fitted with the Petter PU8 ? which is period & had a military application.

    One of the Petter Universal group of engines produced from 1931 to 1945. This is an 8HP horizontal twin version. Large numbers were supplied to the War Department duriung the second world war where they were used to power generators and also landing craft. This example has a WD tag and number. There are two power shafts, one at at 900rpm and one at 1800rpm.

    Anyway correct or not that's the motor I will be looking for if anybody knows of one for sale ?
