  1. Yes Wayne you are correct. The 40-amp alternator AC724/1 has no internal rectifier of any type & relies on the external selenium full wave rectifier. In the event of the selenium rectifier failing it would of course be possible to cook up an equivalent bridge rectifier using silicon diodes. They could be discretely mounted into the fins of the old rectifier preserving the look of a toastie. I feel a toastie with no rectifier behind the grill is a bit of a let down.

The 90-amp alternators of course have integral silicon rectifiers.

I thought so....Just wanted to flag as a S2a Gen is not the same as a S3 due to amperage and the good old Toastie Selenium rectifier.

Couldn't agree more about a Toastie without a working rectifier on show.....Hence why we are precious about genuine Toasties in the Warburtons camp ;);)

  2. I am watching this thread with a great deal of interest, as when my Series 2A comes back, with it's new genny fitted, I will need to look at the old one which does not charge. I did send two emails to a company which seems to do a lot of military stuff, but got no reply, even to say No!

Is uour S2a Gen 40 amp or 90???? I believed that the diodes are in the 90amp and replace the selenium rectifier??? Clive can you clarify???

    Regards

  3. Didint take pic, but defo 2 pipe connections top and 2 bottom. Switch on top and one bolt connection to bracket. Of that I am 100% sure.

Just checked my LTWT parts documents and tha PDWA isn't shown anywhere. I have a copy of additional equipment catalogue so will look at that later tonight. See what that throws up .

    Cheers

  4. FT

I came across this on a TVR Vixen web page, where they say they are difficult to obtain etc??????

    http://www.zen11896.zen.co.uk/vixen/parts/pdwa.html

As a side. If this is linked to the Brake Warning switch on the dash then am I right in assuming it is the same as a S3 88/ 109 GS??????

Saying that though it is likley that they are useless also and that condition from a scrap / broken vehicle cannot be guaranteed!

If this is removed then the solution would be to revert to a Civi S3 set up I guess!

  5. as someone suggested earlier your 'separating' problem is very likely to be down to the clutch plate and or thrust bearing being proper seized on the shaft.....grunt sweat and cussing is the usual answer to that one...

regards your steering relay ....they are relatively cheap but just try freeing your first ...mite save a few quid....remove 2 of the small bolts ..one from the front and one from the back and stand it up firmly in a vice in a corner somewhere and squirt it full of diesel or a petrol/oil mixture through the 'front' hole until it bubbles up out of the back one.... ..leave for a few days whilst continually attempting to turn it it backwards and forwards.......it'll be proper stiff but persevere......keep squirting your release mixture in as you do so which wil flush all the muck and crud out ....if its gonna work.... after a few days you should notice its getting easier to turn....eventually when its proper free ...re fill with lube oil....just keep squirting till you see nice clean oil coming out instead of a mucky mix.....bit of a hassle I know but its the kind of little job you can do every time you wander into the workshop whilst yer 'busy' with everything else....:)

PS: and if you decide to strip the relay fer christ sake be careful of the viscious spring lurking within !!!

Hey just noticed you are a local FoD. I live on the outskirts of Mitcheldean, but higher up on the edge of the forest.

The seizing of the steering relay was the whole thing seized into the front crossmember as the norm. Appreciate the feedback and advice though.

I know what you mean about the inner spring though.......When they ley go.....THEY LEY GO...........:wow::wow::wow:

  6. FT the sender was on the top and the valve was fixed to the bracket via a single bolt.

I guess the answer to the question of it not being the same as a civi S3 is yes, but other BL cars used it as a standard part as you suggest.

For the avoidance of doubt I will take some closer / clearer pics to ensure the right advice / part is known.

    Thanks

  7. Having an EK and an EL Rover 8FFR I may well go for an Aden replica, so to do something a little different.

The note on Gloss finish and not Matt from the Aden Vet is a brilliant piece of factual information.

I painted as3 109FFR Matt before and it didn't keep the weather out to well. , or maybe not as it is a 64 released in 75-76.

I recall Deepcut saying that early 70's vehicles weren't the best for having the B cards saved. EK was released 71 so that may be the wrong side of 70s that threw up a Nil return.

Mind you I haven't tried RLC Museum for the EL yet, so that may answer that one, but the EK will definately be in Aden livery.

Thanks to everyone for input and interest. I will keep the updates flowing on the threads.

    Cheers ;)

  8. As I cannot trace history of my Rover8 FFR and it was early 60's I had the thought that a lot of images I have seen are of them used in Aden or Belfast.

All the other FFR's on the forums are DBG, so I thought why not be a little different and do an Aden replica........

I guess the desert stone colour all over would look great........but it may not be correct on an FFR or would it????

Looking at Aden veterens web site some early FFRs are one colour only and that is desert sand / stone........

However my panels show only signs of DBG :-(:-(:-(. My LTWT S3FFR started service with UDR before it went to 29 Cdo RA and got winterised........So that was a NI vehicle first.

My PIG is ex 4th Guards so that was BAOR......And so DBG.

What is a man to do?????

And to top it all the latest Toastie was painted pink?????????? Im guessing some PO before the last PO thought he had a chopped Pink Panther.....:cheesy:>:(>:(>:(:shocked:

Does anyone have an opinion on a Rover 8FFR being done as ex Aden or leave DBG because no history but no sand paint on original panels, therefore I am not strictly being accurate.

What would you do if it were your choice chaps.....

I guess I like the vehicles in desert sand / stone livery because they stand out and are a bit different.

  9. Keep us posted.......Colours scheme in poor quality pictures I have seen on Aden site seem to suggest Sand with Black, but then the Rover 8's used by the Argyles look DBg and Stone..........Confused dot.com

  10. Been discussed before and an article in this months Classic Military Vehicle magazine, but I have to say what a great day out a recent trip to Cobbaton Combat Collection near Barnstaple was.

My 14 month old son and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves whilst his mum just followed behind wondering what all the excitement was about.

She did however comment that there was a lot of items to look at, even if she did glaze over slightly!

Well worth a visit if anyone is in the area. I will upload some pics when I get the memory card out of the other alfs camera :D
