From my experiance in that neck of the woods there wouldn't be much if anything left of them by now :-) Harsh climate - harsh locals, you should see what thay can do to an abandoned car in the bush in a matter of weeks!
I thought you were writing about some of the locals in this country LOL

So, as I await the 2 Canadian Ferrets I have bought, I am already thinking of things to do.
My main thoughts are to take this opportunity to correct any "issues". Im kind of dissapointed as the only two things that I think I need to do apart from all the usual cleaning are to fit electronic ignition and to fit a battery master shut off.
Im also tempted by a spin on oil fliter kit and would like to find one for the pesky Vokes fuel filter also.
Can any other Ferret owners think of any other parts that can be modified for any kind of improvement but in a such a way as to be reversed if needed?
What would you guys do?
Attached is a picture of the pair as is.
Robin
Add a servo
Get rid of the fuel tap have fuel fed from both sides of the tank
Seperate fuel filter added inline somewhere out of sight
Change the tyres to non run flats just think four great big flywheels dragging you fwd during braking
Just ideas

Guys
I've fitted the 353 and 352 radio combination as well as the rear sterling mount and seat belt bracket, just as shown in Chris' pics. (I'm assuming it's a sterling mount, not a sten one)
However the SURF on the 352 blocks the right hand bracket. Was this a problem in service, or was the mount just bent back?
(I notice in Chris' picture the Surf isn't fitted)
Cheers
Matt
Hi Matt,
Chris has the hand generator fitted if you have that fitted the Surf sits to high. I can't find a pic of mine fitted inside

Where can you buy the exhaust end plates like the Ferrets from? I would like to have a go at making one or two or more likely ask a friend to weld one up for me.

heat resistant paint on a Ferret silencer
gave up that battle years ago
BTW Preston Issacs sells repros
You wouldn't be suggesting that all that lovely black heat resistant paint will dissapear on the first run
Did it?

Its up to the owner of the vehicle what they ware. I personaly don't appreciate looking at someone in uniform if there trying to portray a 19 year old whilst looking like a member of Grandads Army. Now as I'm not far from knocking on the door of 40 I'm even less inclined to try and look like I was twenty years ago. I don't mind waring a green t-shirt and some vaguely looking combat camoed trousers but thats where I draw a line.

I may be having the bins made here as the cost of labour is much less than the UK. I will likely have them made in kit form and you can finish them, this also reduces the size for shipping thereby making it more affordable.
Robin
Kit form would be the best way to go I was going to draw the centre bin up just hadn't had the time. How would you go about making the lids up for the bins would you simplify them and remove the rust traps?
-
One of our Ferrets has a right side escape hatch that has no welded threaded studs to take a side bin.
Robin
Stripping the paint off will expose whether the hatch has been modified with a grinder. Aden and Northern Ireland stand as two likely candidates for bin removal more likely than not for a similar reason IED's / mines.

Hi All,
Robin, I think the ones in the tender had a guide price of £6500, if they realisticaly reach it, that is anyones guess. The only way to know for sure is to contact them.
Dougy
Do Withams still show the results of the last tender? If they do that should show how much they went for but it won't have the tax included in the fee 15% on top of the highest bid. Tax reverts back to 17.5 in the new year.

Andy,
yes I normally find the extension tube tends to stay in place unless the socket I am using goes on too far...In which case I just take them both off, seperate them and screw the extension tube back on.
Mine come off I might try loctite on the threads when it warms up a bit! Its a bit cool at the moment ...
-
I have an oil can so I'll try that method. It took a while to figure out what the manual was saying about the level pug and extension tube. Question is how are you supposed to get an OJ spanner to hold the extension bolt while using the box spanner? Theres no room for an OJ spanner.
Also does anybody use a thread sealant on the plugs?
Thanks much,
Chris

Hi Chris,
You shouldn't need thread sealant as the copper washer should seal the oily stuff in and hold the plug in place. You could use a thread sealant on the the extension tube where it meets the housing. I suspect cleaning the thread might be interesting as a thread locker / sealant will want a clean surface to adhere to.

Great photos! I would be very pleased to see more photos of the Ransomes & Rapier crane at Longmoor (in the RH background) if anyone has them.
Here (for no very good reason) is a photo of my crane, a rather big restoration project although it is not quite as far gone as it looks. Built in 1908, it is the second oldest breakdown crane in the country and the oldest outside the National Collection, and is in fact the only 'proper' GWR breakdown crane to have survived (by which I mean one ordered by the GWR - there are three much later ones which were ordered on Government account as a war precaution and allocated to the GWR which also still exist). When built, it was so 'modern' that it redefined the standards for such cranes and the features it pioneered then became standard on all such cranes until the advent of the hydraulic jib cranes of the 1970s.
I suppose that there is some legitimacy for posting this crane here, since there are several photos in existence of this crane at Swindon Works engaged on war production work, doing things like loading LCTs onto wagons.
More pics please

Just a thought we had diesel cookers same as pic one. Its not been converted to diesel has it.
oh And normal army not been able to get it right. We had diesel cookers with the petrol cvr"t" and petrol cookers with the diesel land roves ?????
I've used paraffin in the cookers for a while now but I'll try diesel in one of them and see if it works any better.
You don't mean the No.12 diesel cooker do you? Great piece of kit better than the other two by a long shot!

Nice one Andy. Registrations Noted :-)

Attemping to change the oil in the inner tracta housing. The manual says to remove the drain plug, but there are 2 plugs down there. An allen key brass plug and a hex head bolt. I'm thinking its the big brass allen key one.
Also to change the outer tracta housing it talks about jacking the Ferret and rotating the wheel so the hub plug is at 6 o'clock. Where does one locate the jack under the hull??
Sorry but first time servicing the new Ferret. :???
Thanks-Chris

Hi Chris,
Its the big brass one No.17. Hopefully some of the others might be of use as well

The better one of the two seemed to be the one without all the stuff piled up in the back can't remember the lot number

Would be interested if you were on this side of the world, hate to think what P&P would be!

A few pics taken at Withams today the MK2/7 has the reg numbr 06eb51 and looked to o.k inside, not perfect the engine compartment was absolutely full of cobwebs. The MK 4 looked to be more complete inside, the reg was 01da30 and the front tyre was flat no valve stem in sight. Both have the browning mount installed and both have birds nests on board as well for good measure.

It would have helped if I said brake servo well worth doing and was a mod carried out by the MOD.
Most owners seem to want to keep the vehicle in the spec that it was used during service any mods r usually stop gaps till they find the correct parts. Any mods that they do find to be of use end up being hidden.
Not the answer you're after but you have already mentioned the basic ones battery cut off switch and the like.
I'll add another and I know Ian Wallace had this idea and did it, LED replacement lights for the side, indicator and brake lights. Indicator lights required more resistance in the circuit for them to operate the flasher unit.
