  1. No, it is worse.........It got so hot, the transmisson has melted and filled all the little channels in the bottom of the body. .......Then the roof fell in on it. It will need more than a polish. regards Mark.
  2. Picture taken this morning, May 8th 2010, in my garage. A newly acquired burnt out project VW166 - note the sign above the garage door. Another picture taken May 8th 1945, exactly 65 years previous and just a couple of miles away. U.S. troops celebrate the end of hostilities in Europe, when that picture was taken the VW above was only about a year old
  3. The Amsterdam fire is a huge loss for all those guys that had vehicles stored there. However, I guess if not for that tragic event - some of us would never get the chance to own a real 166. Just a shame that some vehicles are so far out of financial reach that they have to get this bad befor they are even remotely affordable - still an incredable amount of money, but I am very grateful to be able to buy one, and sympatise with the previous owner that must be very saddened.
  4. Thanks guys, Really appreciate the advice - you see I am registered on the forum, used to visit there and make the odd post and thread. So that is a mystery how you guys can get on the forum part but I cannot - I tried another PC because I figured my IP address may be blocked. Thanks for the leads on the other forums, I really do need to get imbedded with other 166 owners and get myself some knowledge in a hurry. I just bought this. It is, as I guess you all know from the tragic fire in Hiolland last year.
  5. Thanks Griff, I cant even get on the forum - I tried again last night from another PC, but still no luck. Ashley, What is 'DISGV' ? even google doesn't know . But, thanks for replies guys,
  6. Any of you guys visit the 166 forum ? http://www.vw166.com/ I think blackpowder goes there, I think I had a PM from him but could not reply to it, then I found that I cannot access the forum at all ? ? .........I can get the site, but not the forum. Is there a problem generally, or is it just me ? Thanks for any clues. Regards Mark.
  7. I am very impressed indeed. Well done to you sir ! - and thanks for posting up those original pictures, Regards mark.
  8. Your confession has been noted Alan, Witchfinder General is on his way - I know it was witchcraft ! Thanks again, regardsd Mark.
  9. Thanks Nige, superb site - I think you are on to something here ! certainly the design of some of the rolling stock containers is very similar to this cabin. Thanks, regards Mark.
  10. Thanks for all the imput guys, I measured it today, and I think it is way to small for livestock. 8'6" x 6'6" and 7' high. Also cleaned that data plate - it reads 'CABIN R MK II' 'LMS Rly' '1941'
  11. Thank you Richard, great information - I have an idea that it is military, and because of extra holes designed in the bodywork in specific places - I feel it is made for a dfinite task. Perhaps a generator ? No wheel arches, and a flat floor. The whole thing is mounted on a steel chassis or subframe. I have the idea that it is designed to be demountable. Just inside one of the doors, mounted on the 'wall' there is a seat that folds down (not unlike one of those disabled seats you get for shower cubicles) OK, Now I am more interested than befor................. I think I feel a garden shed comeing on ! I will dig this out tomorrow, scrape off that plate and get some measurements ! Thanks again chaps.
  12. Thank you Alan, that is terriffic - I feel a little foolish now that you have pointed out the abreviation for railway. You may be right about the livestock thing, I will search the interweb with that added clue - I have been searching 'truck mounted radio shacks' etc. I think I can just read along the top of the data plate 'CABIN' ? ? and perhaps MK II ? C'mon you youngsters with you new eyes, help out an old duffer !
  13. OK, well 65 views and no answers - I guess maybe you guys need a few more pictures, The whole of one side is removeable, by opening two doors and lowering a cetre section. Why ? Can anyone read this data plate ?
  14. I think maybe it is a radio shack ?. Would it have been fitted as a body on a vehicle ? More pictures available if anyone is interested. Is it of any use or interest - or should I just torch it ? The subframe is hardwood and solid, the hardboard lineing is no good, the internal roof is good, there is another door on the other side, and a ramp or sliding door on the back ?
  15. Well, the auction was for all three, and all the parafinalia found with them. A few helmets, shovels, etc. 17.000 Euros, I would have paid more - when is the next ww1 original german army ambulance comeing on the market.? Anyway, a bit of fun - and one of those vehicles that the value just have no previous marker to compare,
  16. I'd really like to stumble across a barn like this. Locked away since just after WW1, 3 horse drawn German army ambulances. Recently discovered, and auctioned on ebay Fr. Picture of the farm, while being used as a makeshift hospital. OK, anyone care to take a guess at what price they made ? No cheating, and if you already know, keep it to yourself - it's just a bit of fun, I will reveal the winning bid later.
  17. Thank you - some very kind comments. I really do appreciate it. I hope that in a short while, if all goes well I can link to a movie of some trials ! Thanks again guys - especially those that have been a constant source of encouragement. Watch this space. Regards Mark.
  18. Thanks Mike, this is the first VW I ever owned and I really do appreciate the insight as to function and failings. thanks for taking the time to reply so positivly, and so usefully.
  19. Thank you - there is still a lot of work to do as yet - the seals around the axles etc. I can't do tat until I sort out the oil leaks - there are many, and the engine runs dreadful. But, it will go for the muddy plunge - it certainly is not too nice for that ! - That was the whole idea. Thanks again, and thanks to you too Texas !
  20. Some pictures taken this morning. Still an awful lot left to do. It looks more complete than it really is.
  21. Thanksch for the great Commentsch Guysch, Not Schure if you are just being Schilly, or really taking the Pisch........... I like that about the Schpeeeeeedos LOl !
  22. :-D Yeah, I guess it schould, My Schpelling is dreadful............
  23. Thank you Spood ! Here is a picture from last night, ........It is starting to look quite "swimmy"
  24. Windshield and mountings. Sometimes it took longer to make the formers than the actual pieces. I couldn't buy the channel in the size I needed so had to buy stock box section and alter it by cutting it into angle with a grinder, and welding it back to make channel - laborious work. As always, guessing shapes and sizes from the model and picture books.
