  1. I'd personally strip it down, and replace seals, you may overtighten and damage threads..... but you could drain the oil in the final drive? loosen the nut, plop some gasket goo, (the oil/heat resistant type), around it, and re-torque it.....it may work, if you are lucky. Trouble is leaks get worse, as my gearbox leak did on Saracen, lost all it's oil whilst driving,..-unnoticed, save fore a nasty burning-paper smell, but by then, it was tooo late burnt brake bands..... new /replacement gearbox required!!!! oops!
  2. apparently, early Saracens had a higher ratio 1st gear, and subsequently, when a replacement was needed, they had boxes with a lower ratio fitted, as a matter of course, was this because the earlier boxes tended to wear out the brake bands, on the 1st gear position, due to its ratio being too high? My mk 5 up-armoured one, is about to have a new box, but I'm not yet sure whether the one I have in mind, is early or late type, or even if they are compatible either way, or whether I should only fit the later type....anyone know?:???
  3. anyone heard of this curiosity? do any still exist, what engine/gearbox were used? and how did the lower revving diesel affect the speeds available, from the gearbox (if they used the original type),.... that was only efficient at over 2500 revs, high-ish for a 1970's 80's diesel lump....
  4. Thanks for the info, -did you manage to decipher the history related cards?.....:coffee:
  5. so sorry to learn of your woes, must be catching, as my Saracen has lost ability to change gear..... so it is a big job to change the box on it!..... good luck finding the problem, hope it's only minor.....

  16. Hi, Not overly sure what much of what is written on the record cards mean, except of course that which is obvious.... I shall try and upload some copies of the record cards... perhaps those of you more in the know than I, can explain what it is all about, ...-now that I have found them, some of the details such as regiments/squadrons etc can be finalised!.... here goes!
  17. Hi Dad, don't worry, -people will soon want you to tell them of your escapades...... just give it a little while, -I didn't get much to begin with, then the messages started coming ...... just takes time for the word to get around....:-\:-D:coffee:

  19. no sender not stuck, have dismantled it and checked.... and it all moves freely, float is quite gummed up with brown rusty coloured varnishy type substance. I tried it out in a bucket of petrol, and it floats and moves the innards, so I think it may be an electrical problem.:coffee:

  21. hi all, my fuel guage permanently reads 1/2 full, when ignition is on, but goes to empty when turned off, whatever amount of fuel is in tank:confused:,....any ideas as to what the problem is and how to remedy it, until now I've been using a dip stick, in 2 screw fitted caps that I've let into the tank at each end......
  22. Hi all, if anyone has any pics or info on the subject mentioned, both my father Robert Kill, and I would be eternally grateful. He served in Aden in I think 1956/ '57/ and possibly '58, helping to train the A.P.L. to drive Ferrets. My Dad was in 3rd The Kings Own Hussars, and later The Queens Own Hussars. We have been scouring the web for pics and info, and I've just suddenly thought, POSSIBLY, somebody on here just may have some old snaps, that they could post up...... it'd make an old soldier very happy!:-D
