  5. Hi..yes he can claim his fathers medals. You have to write to the Medals Office at RAF Innsworth which is near Gloucester. Provide as much info as you can..name, rank, number etc. If your friend is the direct living decendant then he can sign the forms if his mother is still alive then she would have to sign. I claimed my grandfathers medals a few years ago as he served in Burma during WW2 and on his return never spoke much about his time and got on with his life. He died 15 years ago and we decided to claim them and present them to my Nan. We got her to sign the form using a bit of deception! Took about four months but then a small parcel arrived and in it contained a small medal box with his medals and ribbons..just as they would have been sent all those years ago. The box had his name rank number on it and it was very moving. We had them mounted and displayed in a case with a small brass plaque. When we gave it to my Nan she started to cry and we all got very choked up..but it was such a nice thing to do..we were all very pleased. If i can find the paperwork ill let you know the exact address but a bit of digging on the net should reveal it. Andy.
  6. Very moving...thank you for sharing. "we will remember them"

  8. It looked superb! I travel between Southampton and Plymouth quite often for work and see quite a few things on the road. Last friday on the home to Plymouth i passed a Scammell Crusader EKA recovery. That was between Taunton and the A303. The weekend before that i spotted a stunning 1940's Bedford MW with trailer making its way slowly up Haldon Hill just outside Exeter. Just call me eagle eyes!!
  9. 2000hrs today westbound on the M27 between J2 and J1 a HUGE Scammell Explorer. It was towing a comms bodied trailer and another smaller trailer behind that!! Looked awesome amongst all the boring euro boxes...a real treat to see:)
  10. Portsdown Hill, Portsmouth @14:45 today. 2xGMC 2 1/2 tonners Jimmys. 1 towing a Willys jeep the other a Ben Hur trailer. Going eastbound. Turned a few heads..mine included!
  11. Thanks for all your replies and extra info..all very useful. What i couldnt understand is why there was one fitted when the vehicle has never been registered with DVLA and looks to have come straight from the MOD. Does seem odd to me but as LoggyDriver has pointed out it could be exRAF. So my question was if ones fitted does it have to be used and calibrated or removed altogether if the truck is only used pleasure and taking to shows. Im not in a position to buy at the moment as i work away from home alot and wouldnt have the time to use it, also i only have outside storage in a secure yard which isnt ideal and expensive! Thanks again.
  12. I was in 7 SQN RCT and we were in Cyprus on a UN tour Jan to Jul 92. The rest of the Regiment were still in the 'Shot. We came back from Cyprus and spent the rest of the year on exercise before going off to Bos' in 93. In this period all the regiments vehicles never deployed on tour. Hope this info helps. Do you have any pics?
  13. I was at 27 Regt 91 to 94..lol. Could well have driven your L/R!
  14. Just a quick question...Theres a very clean Bedford MJ on ebay at the moment..some of you will probably have seen it. It says in the description that it is direct from the MOD. Its never been registered and has never been used on the roads, its showing 55,000 miles. Heres my query..its fitted with a tachograph. Im an ex rct driver and no military vehicles were fitted with tachos...so why is this one and if say i bought the truck would i be allowed to remove it as it would not be used for commercial purposes? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bedford-MJ-4x4-military-troop-carrier-truck-mint_W0QQitemZ110421650010QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Commercial_Trucks?hash=item19b5a4aa5a&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

  18. Thanks for clearing that up!! We never refered to them as a GS244..only Daf (not as good as a Bedford) 4 tonners!! Still a good wagon though..
  19. Hi ex RCT driver here...What is a GS244?! Good luck with the test..
  20. Good programme..but whats with all the singing??! Just get on with it!!!
  21. Have you thought about putting an anti syphon device inside the filler neck? I had all the fuel nicked out of my DROPS when i was in Bosnia in 93..thieving gypos!!
  22. "head office" is that a pun..lol Been a while since i last drove a 4 tonner but i remember that the MJ could only manage a top speed of 50mph before the steering wheel starts to shake and also theres only 4 gears for normal road use and as you can pull off in 2nd you only use three. Hi/Low range can only be engaged at a crawl and is only really needed for cross country use.
  23. la mistery is sol-ved!! Thanks...ill be able to sleep tonight!
