  1. I think sometimes the designers lost sight of the fact, that these machines had to be maintained and have major repairs carried out in the field under fire. Also under atrocious weather conditions. Design and Testing must have taken an inordinate amount of time and expense when I would have thought simplicity and speed would have been the name of the game. Never the less It gives people like you the opportunity to shine and show just what standard of work is achievable, in the new electronic age. Your thread is really testament to your work ethic. I take my hat off to you.

  2. I'm also after the part circled in the picture if anyone has a spare laid around , or if anyone has a distributor that is US and would like to sell it and it has the relevant bit I'll gladly buy the whole thing .

    Thanks

    Dave

If you cannot get the part that you need, I have a N.O.S. distributor for a 28hp or 214. it has push in plug leads not screw in type. There are three distributors advertised by someone on ebay for parts. Regards John.
  3. Welcome. You have an interest in vehicles built during one of the most interesting periods of the 20th century. Cab design changing from the most rudimentary examples to safe work places Fuels being developed. Engine power outputs climbing combined with increased reliability combustion processes developing.Bearing materials improving. Engines and vehicles going from individual builds to production line assembly. Brake and Drive train advances,Constant mesh, synchronized meshing, pre selector and automatic gearboxes all making debut and finding there place. Portal axles banjo and split examples. Exposed and enclosed propeller shafts, layrope couplings and various examples styles of spider couplings. Chassis shape and materials developing All wheel drive with various suspension methods. Cart spring, independent, torsion bar. Tyres and Tracks developing Not to mention articulation starting to become common place. All produced by a myriad of companies both home grown and overseas. Mostly consigned to history. Which is where this site finds its place.

  4. Going from memory. Either Leyland or Cummins engined, Clark transmission pretty bulletproof, rear CV joint a bit fragile. Brakes sometimes. Easy to work in a shower of what ever you were loading if not careful. Windscreen sometimes. Slow but reasonably reliable. I think the parking brake adjuster is a knurled on the top of the lever in the cab.

  5. It tells you on Withams site how much they charge to package and pallet. Pity I did not know I was there yesterday. If a cable reel with military fittings is an good to you I have one you can have for the courier cost. Regards John.

  6. Hello Tedly. With the Vigor radiator cleanliness was a thing you had to do, I always carried a couple of blocks of wood for the tracks. Snow plates cured most of the trouble. I am sure in the dark box I have a rocker cover for a C8. My father had a Paxman 6RPH with a Napier Turbo Ex RN. Commers with TS3 engines were well powered for their time some had York trailing axles and went well as six wheelers.

  7. Hello Tedly. Costain mining used to have a Tc6 Euclid Dozer with side by side C/6s on an opencast near where I live when I was at school. The radiators were behind the driver and It suffered from O/heating I remember. Sites are quieter now what with H and S. Body exhausts and funnel size silencers. There Is a quarry In Cumbria that keeps antique plant running, I will give you a report when I go. I last drove a GM engined dump truck about 8 years ago I think it was a V8 supercharged and turbocharged but it was well past its best. I drove a Yale 2500 loading shovel years ago It made its own music Trumps are allowed. Vickers built Two prototypes with C8SFL engines I remember sitting on them. I have a C4SFL with 10 registered hours. C8s have a soft unhurried exhaust note. keep porting eludes me to sorry.Regards John. (Remembered 2 strokes ports no valves, keep on running)

  8. Hello Tedly. I used to drive a Ts14 motor scraper with 2 LEYLAND 680 engines working with GM engined ones they were faster on the flat but I could bank faster. We also had Terex dump trucks with V16 GM engines on an opencast not far away. I am afraid my favorite is still the RR C6SFL. In A Vickers Vigor or a SF65 enginedTs24 I spent many hours driving a Vickers dozer without a hick . An exhaust note in its own class.(It only had an expansion box silencer and 4 inch angled output)

  9. Hello Tedley. Most of our journeys were less than 50 miles with lots of short climbs and downs. Another sound box was the Foden 2 stroke. A local concrete company had a fleet of them and they could be heard all day, A missed gear was allways heard. We had a Deltic working the line past my house a couple of years ago It was mostly only on one engine still lots of smoke and an instantly recognizable sound. Keep on porting Regards John.
