  1. Clive what was FV1609 - Shorland or Pig with Malkara?

    The original Mk 1 Pig.

What are called Mk 1 are really Mk 2 & those that have the contract plates that show a Mk confirm them as being Mk 2. But the Army forgot this detail & in Op Bracelet Sept 1972 - June 1973 those upgraded Pigs were designated Mk 2 which was error, they should have been designated Mk 3 :D

  2. The list in the following link is far more comprehensive;

    http://www.jedsite.info/misc/foxtrot/fv_series/fv-series.html

    ...... and it does list 1609 :)

Yes I know Richard, I contributed a number of entries to the FV1600 list.:D

You can tell that because the FV1624 is included as this variant was described to me by the EME who designed the FV1623 & the enhancement to FV1624. In fact I have the minutes of the design committee meetings. But the FV1624 does not appear in the standard lists that are around.

  3. Here are the Asset Codes old & new for truck & trailer mounted X-ray equipment in 1967.

As for the EMERs for the vehicle mounted equipment they are in EMER MEDICAL & DENTAL

    O 020 - 029 Watson 90/400 man miniature radiography series 1 & 2

    O 020 - 029 Unit, mass radiography Watson Odelca 70mm

All other X-ray equipment & ancillaries of their various kinds are in section O.

  4. The crows foot or Pheon is to identify attractive (theft-worthy) items of Government property, but it is the wrong way up relative to the text.

If this came from a farm & was branded on, could it not be the farmer just branding this wood demonstrating the different combination of marks he could use on his various animals.

As for sleepers I have several here & there are deeply penetrated with years of creosote.

  5. as its illuminated is it to do with exposing the light and obscuring it as it would only be of use in poor or dark conditions when it would be required to be lit

The light is just so that it can be seen at night, its just another variant of the basic model. I don't think there was any intention for the flap model to act as a signalling shutter over the light source. They seem to be two separate variants.

  6. CLIVE l have just looked at the picture on post 19 it appears that a portion of the circle is movable as to obscure the other half ?

Wally yes that was a feature proposed for the more advance model where it was flipped back & forth to reveal a different colour or pattern or flipped in a coded sequence. It wasn't an anti-observation feature.

  7. the only thing l can think is that you could alter the shape so that they blended in to the surroundings

Wally there were various shapes envisaged for signifying different things be that for a particular unit or a particular signal. But that wasn't the way of avoiding enemy observation.

  8. IS one that can be illuminated and differant coloured lens fitted fo use in poor light

Wally yes illuminated for after dark use & option of different colours.

This was illuminated by means of a wick.

We've not really got the other purpose yet & how enemy detection was minimised.

  9. they appear to be turned and the angle from vertical can be altered so some form of semaphore

Wally yes one variant has an additional flap in the form of a semi-circle "b" on Fig 1 & 3 flapped in & out by the lever "d2" in Fig 4

So what is the variant on the right?

  10. I had a hunch that it was signalling and thought I would follow it up, could not believe it when the ebay picture came up !!

Oh dear too much information given away too soon. So that was a waste of £5 or so!

The inventor lived in Canterbury as it happens.

So assuming the ebay image is unreadable :-D

What was the primary purpose apart from communications?

What are the features of the other variants?

How was it intended to be used to avoid enemy observation?

  11. would it be an improved apparatus for indicating or communication in connection with military and other operations?

Ah, we posted at the same time Clive!! It is Patent no. 9350 and applied for by Bernard Dietz of Canterbury

Oh crikey did you google it to ebay? Grrh! I only got it in the post today!

  12. Is it for signalling? I can see now that when opened up it is not like an umbrella but appears to be a circle of fabric.

    Very good Richard spot on.

There were several variants of construction & use detailed here. Can anyone explain these? There was also a purpose more basic than communicating although in the broadest sense it is also communication.App3822b.jpg

  13. Without knowing the exact size of the thing, could it be an early medical device for widening arteries or other internal passages?

    Simon

Simon I think I know what you might have in mind, those particular devices if they did exist beyond barrack room horror stories make me wince.:shake:

But no its much larger, the pole is for carrying it.
