    Looking for a front housing/casing for a 12v Starter for my GPW (converted from 6V) as photos, or any info where I might obtain one as desperate to get it fixed before an upcoming show.....Help....l.

    hows the rest of the unit? If it's tired, it may be worth buying one of the new 12v starters available through any of the dealers.

     

    any ideas why it broke? Does it have the rear bracket that is often missing?

  2. Have a think about doing it yourself with a spray gun. You can get a small compressor that produces enough air to spray with a gun in the region of £70 to £80 at Aldi etc. If it's desert it would never have been done perfectly, it would have been a quick blow over the OD. It's much easier than you think! The secret is to spray even coats and the first I find should be a light dusting (spray a paint/thinners tin to test for touch), then just as it's tacky (use the spray on the can to touch test, if the can sticks to your finger and you can pull the can, it's just right) put a heavier coat on.

  3. There was a 38 Sqn association but I think it is now defunct. Best bet is to place a listing in the RAF news, they do this all the time. There may even be an unofficial 38 Sqn historian.

  4. If the price is right, buy it now. If not, I'll bet someone else will have it including me.

     

    i wouldn't be put off by the missing parts, as mentioned they may be there. As long as the price matches the condition then it's a winner in my opinion

    with ref to pension pot. You hit the nail on the head. I have more in my collection than I ever needed with the idea of them increasing in value better than money in the bank. That and my real pension have flat lined now. I have some very rare items that I never want to see chopped up any more.

  6. I think he was building a repro.

     

    I had 2 1940 excelsior autobyks that were 34 frames apart. I used the parts from one to repair/rebuild the other and sold the remains on. They are fun bikes but Jesus I would not want to pedal it to far.

  7. The Police were at the W&P show looking at some deacs, they never batted an eye lid at the D&B stall so I think they have been briefed to not to get involved until things are clarified. Some dealers even put signs up for the Police to have a play.

     

    i also heard than you will still need an import/export permit to move an EU spec gun through the EU and that if the EU spec changes again, you will need to pay to bring it up to standard or it reverts to the fars we have now of having 'defective deactivated guns' which are illegal to sell.

  8. Ron, eBay price for a 1940 junior engine is a bit more I think. I sold one last year for nearly £500 to a guy in the states. It then cost near £100 to ship it to New York but he wanted it desperately for his weblike project. I added in lots of other spares as the cost of shipping was upto a certain weight. It just shows how much someone will pay when they are desperate for something.

  9. It was over Woodhall Spa for the '40s Festival last Sunday (first test flight after the engine woes someone said, but I don't know if this was actually the case) :-)

    thats probably true, I was in the 41 Sqn Centenary parade a week last Thursday and it was on the lazy runway for engine runs. So unless it flew Saturday then Sunday was its first outing. I read the AEMS and the report which made interesting reading. The photos just didn't really show the extent of the damage. They did well to keep it in the air and I don't think many people know how close we came to losing the aircraft. There were mistakes made all the way through from maintenance to aircrew procedures and many Norms ( A term we use for somthing that is normally done but is not laid down in a publication). But it's good to see her back and I think many many valuable lessons have been learnt.

     

    Anyway, off on a tangent, anyone recognise this jeep?

    the NSN comes back as a refrigerated transport and storage container. It looks like it's ISO size.

  11. I was wondering if there are any former RAF MT or Suppliers here who might be able to help me with some questions.

     

    I have copies of a number of RAF Form 524s for RAF BSA WD B40 motorcycles and although many are very straight forward to read, some entries have got me baffled. For example:

     

    35 AX 18

     

    Received from - BSA

    On Charge to - CVD Hilton

    Received from - CVD Hilton

    On Charge to - Air Support Command

    Received from - Air Support Command

    On Charge to - RAF Germany

    SOC - RAF Germany

     

    This Record Card does not actually state which Station or Unit the Motorcycle was On Charge with, only the Command (other cards I have name the Stations/Units) Does anyone know if this information can be found and where?

     

    id imagine the vagueness is down to the vagueness of the demand placed. Which in turn is probably down to the supplier not knowing who was where.

  12. Agh yes, how many times have we heard about the Stirling ricochets bullets off wet leather. I'd challenge anyone who believes that to try it out. There's a guy on YouTube firing one out to some stupidly long distance, he can't even see the target half the time but the projectile still passes through sheet plate. In my opinion the Sterling has to be the best all round SMG ever made.
