... the Guard Commander tells the two-man prowler guard not to patrol but to sit and stay warm in the Guard Room, then rotating them with the one-man gate guard every twenty minutes to allow him to thaw out for 40 minutes. Copious mugs of hot tea/coffee inside and out.

 

Then hearing the following morning on BFBS radio that a massive anticyclone is centred over Sennelager, pushing temperatures down to -40 degrees (at which point it's the same in Centigrade and Fahrenheit and *COLD*!), making it the coldest place in Europe, which meant that for those four times 20-minute periods when I found myself huddled in the sentry box through the night, I was the coldest person in Europe.
