Ivor Ramsden
One of our regular supporters visited the Manx Aviation & Military Museum today. He's a retired dental surgeon and served in Korea with the British Commonwealth Dental Unit. He showed me a photo of his "surgery", which was a special-bodied Bedford QL, reg. number 22RB60. He wondered where it is now.... I said I'd try and help. Anybody got any ideas? It probably led a more sheltered life than the average GS Lorry so it might have been demobbed late. Is there a Mobile Dental Surgery Collectors Club out there?
fv1609
Ivor there is such a unit in a WOT at RAF Cosford Museum, but I couldn't bring myself to look at it too closely:shake: http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/cosford/collections/vehicles/vehicle_info.cfm?vehicle_id=21 Maybe the archives of the RADC at the Army Medical Services Museum might help. Are you sure about the reg no? http://www.ams-museum.org.uk/
les freathy
Ivor, attached is a photo of the Bedford QL dental unit and its trailer. These were issued during WW2 and it is quite possible due to the specialised nature of the vehicle that some were still in use PW. I have never seen a photo of a QL in PW use so a scan of your friends photo would help, i would imagne that they only survived into the late 40s maybe very early 50s, if i remember correctly i think the dental corps were issued in the 1950s with O type Bedfords with semi trailers identical to the National health mobile units unless we have other evidence which i would welcome cheers Les
6 X 6
Marvelous 'photo Les, who knows what suffering was endured within these vehicles. I assume the trailer was the waiting room.
Ivor Ramsden
Les, Here's the photo. The QL was with "C" Section, BritCom Dental Unit in Korea. The photo is in the enthrallingly-titled "A History of the Army Dental Service", which doesn't seem to have made the bestseller list just yet ... abn deuce
is'nt the trailer where they removed the gold fillings from the removed teeth? and then made jewerly or was it the other way around and the work shop was in the truck. To be serious I m sure that those who had dental problems while in the service were very glad to find relief .
