A total of 2,326 tons of bombs are dropped, in a very precise and concentrated attack and a raging firestorm engulfs the city. 16,000 residential buildings are destroyed, but over 40,000 die in the raid. 1.2 Million people, or two thirds of the cities poulation flee the city.
