Bomber Command returns to Hamburg. Pathfinders using H2S ground imaging radar lead in an attacking force comprising 787 Bomber. A total of 2,326 tons of bombs are dropped, in a very precise and concentrated attack and a raging firestorm engulfs the city. 16,000 residential buildings are destroyed, but over 40,000 die in the raid.

 

1.2 Million people, or two thirds of the cities poulation flee the city.

 

Some estimates put the death toll as high as 60,000
