marktinkerman
Hi I'm trying to make up my mind what to do with a 1972 Bedford MK I've had for about 20 years. I converted it into a motorcaravan by replacing the cargo bed with a communications box off a Bedford RL which because of its window design is self airing (slightly modified underneath to make it demountable). It really became redundant about 15 years ago and has been parked up since slowly decaying. For much of this time it got taken in for MOT each year then returned to the top of a Welsh mountain near Dolgellau. Stopped using it because running from festival to next and tatting down/setting up sauna/showers n relaxation space needed something faster, For the last 3 or 4 years it didn't move or get visited at all . Its an early version with the 330 multifuel engine, registered as a motorcaravan, tax exempt and has about 38,000 on the clock. Last time i insured it it cost £79 comprehensive Now its lost its parkup so I have to do something with it. Mechanically its fairly good. Since it was last MOT'd it has only done 10 miles, engine, gearbox, axles OK. side and main lights worked... Cab rotted but would pass MOT with minor work, have found a guy with reasonable cab for £700 went up with WD40 and batteries, started it up moved it back and forwards, walked round found oil feed pipe to injector pump leaking so stopped it. Can anyone here give me some idea of what its worth?

marktinkerman
Hi David thanks for reply I have considered several options for the old girl excerpt from my Facebbok page " sams sauna magic hat " which has many pictures and rambling thoughts... various scenario's. 1. sell it as is (without the tat inside) in which case will help buyer MOT it. 2. MOT it and get more for it. 3. MOT and revamp interior, 4. mot, do interior and repaint/ patch outside so it tidy. 5. have found cab for £700 so restore and sell for top price. 6.mot and move to new long term parkup and keep it. Have seen prices for MJ's which I admit are better as a working vehicle but aren't tax exempt and don't have the mutifuel engine which providing one is not in a hurry is a more pleasant engine... Due to work pressures ie. 2 vehicles to MOT, new tentage to prepare prior to summer season etc. then option 1 is the easiest if least satisfying. Am now also wondering if she is worth more as bits as I presume a demountable RL communications box might be of interest to an RL owner and the 330 multifuel because of its injector pump control system has a manifold depression that might make transplant to an RL easy as the vacuum servo brakes should still function. Had thought last night that when I was a mechanic at EJ Baker motors in Aldershot in 1973ish I might even have serviced her when she was new
Austin
Hello and welcome! I'd be interested in the RL comms body if you decide to sell it seperately! :-) Cheers

marktinkerman
Hi again Austin we had a K9.. don't know if there is a record for greatest number of miles towed round UK but ours must have been up there.. I bought it in Witshire with dead P6 fitted n towed it back to mid Wales sold it to a friend who sold it,it was towed away.. later he bought it back n it was towed back n then it towed off again
Austin
I wouldnt have a clue what to offer to be honest, great old truck though, and the body is awesome! Love the K9 story, I've been towed a few times in various K9s! Its a bit scary, haha!
marktinkerman
i have no idea what its worth either Austin... That's why I came on this site, to get some idea of what it and the other bits are worth. Or the whole truck... Modern truck backs for storage seem to start at £500 and none of them seem to be self airing Farraday cages with 8 sliding glass windows on the outside backed by sliding metal Gauze windows n finally sliding steel shutters inside, built like bank vault or have slide in jackable legs and character... saw an advert for another old military back (bolt on) but off a 6 wheeler for £1300 so guess that's the ballpark? Main body box is close to rust free but the skirt below needs plating and the bolted on Luton storage box needs some work. 1 gauze shutter torn. OS front door post bent back about an inch or so enough to jam the door.. needs heating or a few partial cuts with an angle grinder and straightening The chimney comes out through the little box on the back so the roof has no holes in. I t also has a professionally built medium size woodburner in it and a vintage cooker, 2 ring, grill and oven that can go with it or not.. worth £300 for the pair. the rest of the mostly oak fittings, drop leaf table cupboards shelves etc. go with it
