Scotch Harry
Anyone got any ideas on these please as to who they were issued to etc?. The markings on the used one have completely vanished. Thanks
P Bellamy
RAF stores code 22E/ is visible, indicating it is an item listed under "Clothing; Tropical Dress". All the best, PB
wdbikemad
"22E" is a RAF stores clothing designation (22C being aircrew clothing)......... I've seen these a few times in the past........possibly an item intended for air or ground crew in hot weather (desert) climates, possibly a survival kit item...? The rimmed "jungle" hat was more commonly used by RAF groundcrews in desert and hot-weather climates......... Rumour has it that these caps were sometimes adopted by SAS (alongside many other odd items)........ These caps are matched by the blue-grey, later green, lined peaked caps for cold and wet-weather use, featured not too long ago on this forum......... Incidentally, "Sanders and Brightman" were located in Luton.......they also made RAF OR SD caps during the 1950s and 60s.....! Scotch Harry
Would be interesting to see pics of them in use as its quite a bizarrely shaped cap. Also, dumb question but there is a slot for a badge of some sorts to the front,an RAF cap badge?

Also, dumb question but there is a slot for a badge of some sorts to the front,an RAF cap badge? They do appear a bit odd in shape....a huge peak (probably to deflect the sun...?!!!) and a high crown......... And yes, the holes fit a standard RAF brass cap badge perfectly......... fv1609
Seem to have become bi-service & now the NSN is obsolete.
Blackpowder44
Known as hats A.K. after the hats worn by the German Africa corps in North Africa. On page 126 of Otto von Pivka book on armies of the middle east he has a picture of the gunners of 7 Battery Royal Horse Artillery wearing these hats while serving in the Trucial Oman, also believed worn by Paras in Bahrein.
