Graham
With all that knowledgeable advice posted re my request for information about WW1 side arms, please can I also have some advice about the Mills Grenade. I have read that there was the No5 to be thrown, the No23 fitted with a rod for firing from a cup fitted to the SMLE, and the No36 with a gas check plate to be fired from No2 Mk1 discharger fitted SMLE. The body design seems to alter through this period. Now all this seems to simple so advice please for a minor collector of WW1 arms.
11th Armoured
Hello Graham, I don't know if you've already come across them, but the following websites give a lot of information about the various types of British grenade: http://www.inert-ord.net/brit/index.html http://www.millsgrenades.co.uk/ HTH, Kevin
Tony B
The cartridge used to propel grenades was filled with Ballisite http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballistite This is a lot faster than the Mk6 Cordite cartridge, and led to burst barrels. If you look carefully at some period pictures you will see barrels bound with copper signal wire or even string to prevent burst. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordite
