ArtistsRifles
OK, OK, so it sounds s dumb question - but.... I'm told when you buy rope it's not meaured by the diameter - but by the circumference !!!! Can anyone confirm this please as one of the (many) jobs this winter is replacing all the ropes on the Stalwarts loadbed cover!! Found this place that sell manila rope by the metre on-line: http://www.cheap-rope.co.uk/productlist.asp?ProductCategoryID=
Tugger
No, definitely by the diameter, we sell literally miles of the stuff at the boat yard. We have a reel ends basket with special deals, you could say... its money for old rope Thank you I'm here all week :-D
Adrian Barrell
I think the smaller sizes are measured by the diameter, but the larger certainly always used to be measured by the circumference. I have pulleys marked along the lines of 'for 3" rope' that are clearly sized for 1" dia. I also have a manual on recovery equipment and this also refers to hemp ropes by circumference. Steel wire ropes are measured by diameter.
FV601 (R.I.P.)
By diameter Neil eg. 1" manilla. 1/2"sisal, 9mm Nylon etc.
Karoshi
Well some funny answers there. In sea faring times when men were men and women appreciated it, the likes of natural rope was sold by circumference, the later development of wire rope was sold by diameter. It is now a common practice for those not familiar with our sea faring heritage and traditions, to sell all "rope" by diameter. But now you'll be asking if it hawser or cable laid? ArtistsRifles
Thanks all - majority vote seems to be by dia :-) Now - opinions - would you go for natural manila: Natural Manila Fibre. Ideal for garden use or other decorative purposes, looks just like old fashioned rope. This is made from a natural fibre and will absorb water. It will shrink when wet and lengthen as it dries. http://www.cheap-rope.co.uk/ThumbImage.asp?path=D:\Websites\moorfastcom\crimages/manilla%20fibre.jpg&Width=150[/img] Or something like this: Hemp style polypropylene, a 3 Strand rope made of synthetic fibre, which looks and feels like traditional hemp rope. It has excellent breaking load and resistance to abrasion. Low stretch and easy to splice.,, http://www.cheap-rope.co.uk/ThumbImage.asp?path=D:\Websites\moorfastcom\crimages/rope%20images%20XM%20025.jpg&Width=150[/img]
FV601 (R.I.P.)
Natural fibre will rot after a time and be laible to break when you least expect it. Go with the polypropylene
