  1. Following on from Matt and Nick's thread, when I stripped down my engine and looked at the starter ring and bendix gear they were knackered, chewed to bits, so one can assume that the starter is 6v, but saying that I will leave it at 12 volts otherwise it is another job and more expense to convert back, BUT I never had any trouble starting it if used wisely as Nick said.

  2. Hi All

I have a gearbox and transmission marked GPW, so I am assuming it is off a flat fender jeep (WW2 type) for some reason mounted in an M606A2/3, anyway just removed the rear prop to take the brake drum off, undone the big nut in the middle removed the drum and all my new oil run out from the transmission  , is this normal and if it is what a silly design :? , the reason for my post is this, the brake shoes have a number 47662 stamped on them is this correct and what is the correct ones and where to get them please.

  3. Hi all I think that if you can you should all try to post as much of these accounts as you can, just for the fact that they are real peoples history and memories from a period of their lives that most of us only read about and will never, ever understand, I had a brother-in-law who was in the navy when the Falklands war was on, and he never really talked about what happened on his ship, I for one am fascinated by these stories, NOT for the gruesome side, but for the massive interest in one who has lived through these times and can recollect the funny and also the sad times that have happened to them, this is something that is not taught to the young (I am not that old by the way) today.

Sorry for ranting, but that is what I believe.

  4. Ok next stage, I have had the engine stripped down and was expecting the worst, BUT it was found to be in good condition :D all I have had to purchase was a new set of rings as the oil ring and its pressure? ring behind it was very, very worn, hence why i was burning so much oil, the pistons are standard even after all this time, and the liners are not even scored. They are going to hone the bores, fit the new rings and replace the obligatory broken manifold stud. The tappets will be set as instead of the 10 or so thou clearance there was approximately 1.5 millimetres gap, hence why we thought it was a diesel, never got around to adjusting them because I had no gaskets at the time. I will try and get some pictures of the engine in bits and post them.

Here we go have taken pictures this morning before they rebuild the engine.
