  1. Do you know anyone with a GRAB WAGON, Hiab, Atlas etc type??? I have seen the STABILIZER LEG lowered onto a bead to break it...!!!! Quite effective as ive seen!!!!

Suppose a JCB 3CX leg would do the same!!!

  2. Just in case anyone is interested this pump is a David Brown tractor. £80.

It looks like a Group 1 or 2 gear pump, standard off the shelf, prob a clockwise rotation (altho they can be reversed easily!)

    Bout £80 - £100 is right.

What happens is the Steel gears inside rotate in bushes in either end.

Bushes wear after a while causing the steel gears to cut into the Ally pump housing resulting in a throw away item!

Bad oil and contamination also cause this but not as much.

    WORD OF WARNING!!!

If replacing ANY part of a hydraulic system with new due to this sort of failiure make shure the system is drained of old oil (flush if can) and replace any filters also.

It can be expensive but think about putting your new pump/motor into a system thats had metal swarf and contamination running round it, new unit wont last that long!

Also make sure you prime it with clean oil before installing. Pour into all ports and rotate by hand to get it inside. Put some more in just before you fit hoses, even pour some down hose before fitting. Will give you a fighting chance of not doing any internal damage on start up due to oil starvation!

If I can be of any further help dont hesitate to ask, I do this for a living!

  3. Whoever advised him on the value was way off. A similar uncut UC was up for £30-40,000 last year, I really can't imagine where the £75,000 came from.

This has just kicked the arse out of a deal i was doing for one abroad. Guy asking WAY too much for a resto project and was trying to get him down. I was even invited to go over and stay at his with the missus to batter it out!

Just had a mail off him tonite saying about the Milweb one and now he wants the FULL asking price he originally had it up for, which is the same as a fully restored one over here...!!!!:nut:

If he sells that for £75,000 I will lick his boots n hump his donkey!!!! (dont be having a whip round now just for the Kodak Moment!!!!)

  4. I went on the sunday to see how many of our local lot turned up from Cheshire MVT, a few there.

Was told that it was better on the saturday but not many left on Sunday. Weather as usual was to blame!!!:-(

Had a wander, and a chat.

If anyone recognises me, I was the one with the demented (but cute!) Chocholate Labrador!:nut:

  5. Question i understand the purpose of the big hole in the washer but where is the small one used for ?

The way I see it is the shaped washers are backing strengtheners for the holes drilled in the leather, which acts the same as a modern rubber coupling, simelar to a Hardy Splicer unit! The centre hole does nothing except look pretty...! (as with everything else on this vehicle!!!):cool2:

  6. Chris, Any pictures? that frame is a MKII and had the C number C5154590 from contract S1946 (not the date), plate should be rivetted to frame.

Price is difficult to say without picture, and re. orginality, waiting to find the original parts could be a long wait, always possible to restore with repro parts, and when original stuff becomes available, replace it.

Hope this helps, please let me have the engine number as it becomes known, have one on the register 10 digits after and 33 before this one!

    Cheers,

    Hi Lexc

Just reading this thread and been after a Welbike for a whie now.

Got the details of one in Italy, maybe a second one but no info on that.

Im also looking at a Universal Carrier in with a deal.

The Welbike numbers I have are

    FRAME No 278

    ENGINE No XXE2793

Which would make it an early MK1 by my Welbike book.

  7. Sad news to hear the operating firm has been forced into administration.. As someone else said earlier that will affect a lot of jobs and thus a lot of families...

Local news report last nite had interview with the administration company. Its not over yet.

They have done it to prevent going under or operating at a loss. The DUKW`s are getting the full it and full inspections by relevant boards.

They are looking at putting sponsons around the sides as flotation aids (like on Dublin ones) and maybe just doing a limited road service first without the splashdown.

They have had to lay off 30 staff to keep the company afloat (sorry for pun!), but maintenance remain and admin.

Be a shame to see these mothballed because of unsafe docks, but I see the point made about the prop cage too. maybe it will be taken on board (pun central today...!!!).:undecided:

  8. Sounds like you may need one of these http://www.frost.co.uk/grease-forcer.html

I use one simelar for work and its great! grease hardens after a while, not just in the nipple tho, behind in the pins etc they are screwed into.

Sometimes taking the nipple out and probing the hole (oooh errr missus...!! You sure your a real doctor sir...???) with a thin wire (Mig) breaks it up enough to get fresh in. If not, get heat on it, obviously depending on the part!

Sometimes you have no choice than to remove, strip and clean out the offending part.

  9. They have all been greatly modified and most of the original fittings and superstructure has been removed,

The London DUKW tours still operate but are on borrowed time as no new licences will be granted for any other DUKWs they have been legislated out of use in a lot of other countries too

Sinking caused by a tyre wrapped around the prop which then tore a hole through the hull

    http://www.itv.com/news/granada/2013-06-18/yellow-duckmarine-company-statement/

Apparently they interviewed Rex Ward on the cause and problem that caused the sinking , on local radio today.

He said same, tyre round prop, ripping out the bearing holder (carrier) causing prop to flap about like dick in a bucket (yes, thats a technical term...!!!) damaging hull and causing water ingress!!

They are highly modified close up, not much original left after all the military has been removed and civilian / safety has been put in its place.

The ones in singapore look just like the military left them apart from the roofs, hoods, covers etc, even still got the bullet holes in them!!!!

  10.

    Andy

I was about to say it could be called 'hose of the week' but I think I'd better stop now...!!

    Tim

Its gonna be easier if I do Questions and Answers on that one!!

Wouldnt even know where to start on that thread!!!

So whos gonna be first.....??? LOL

  11. This is the main coolant pipe which goes through the bulkhead. I had problems with this joint on my Spartan and have therefore used 2 jubes on here...

Just a note on this mate, if using two Jubilee (worm drive) clips, put them back to back, pref on opposite sides, not side by side like this.

Ideally use the ONE BOLT CLAMPS, sometimes called SUPA HOSE CLAMPS (just a brand name like Jubilee!), they are more secure and you only need one, looks better too.

  12. Just a quick question. One of the support legs on my trailer restoration is stuck tight. I have managed to get the lever moving ok, and the threaded pin it is on wobbles around, but I still can't get the leg to move up or down despite heat, wd40 for two weeks etc.

If I unbolt the casting and leg from the chassis can I get inside the clamp mechanism to free it from the back?

    If not, any other suggestions?

    Cheers,

    Sean

There is actually a service tool for this, 816-h4mm3r, it's a 4pound precision instrument that if used correctly will work mate! :D

  13. Hi

am in process of trying to buy a Carrier of a collector whos english isnt too good.

We have got to the stage of Identification and he has sent a few pics of i think Engine plate and the numbers stamped into the top edge of the drivers compartment.

Engine plate says a Canadian, cant make out mark or year from this.

Could someone in the "Carrier Know" extract some info on this please.

I have history of where its from and what it was used for post war, fascinating story but have to keep quiet til deal is done and im running my sticky little hands all over it...!!!!:D

  15. Get to Nijmegan (spell check please on isle 21!!) drive thru Belgium into Netherlands.

When I was 13 I visited an Uncle in the forces in Brunssum, travelled the whole area.

Followed the Landing Zones and Drop Zones from maps, located fields and structures, found part of the maginot line buried and still with Barbed wire on etc.

Spent every school holiday over there with him, stayed on base in his quaters (Officer, RAF) dhopped in the NAAFI, met other NATO guys from different nationalities etc.

Great learning curve for a teenager.

    Would recommend it to anyone!

  16. Have we a date on this AND is anyone interested before it gets crushed??

The Civvie trailer looks to have Landy wheels on, they look very military!
