  1. Excellent.............

Largest turnout of Military Vehicles I have seen in many years.

Even the weather was kind this afternoon.

I was there this afternoon, going back on my own tomorrow as missus can't take that much excitement (so she tells me) an excellent time! If you at loose end tomos get down there, great day out. Loads of trade stalls, refreshments, huge beer tent, some tractor things n gee gees! Loads of green stuff, great turn out by my local MVT. even got an Aussie MG carrier there!

  2. I have been operating vehicles with power steering for 40 years now and never seen or heard of the problem that you have had. Well done for working it out !

    David

Im a hydraulics engineer and see this sort of thing all the time on older machines.

Usually find by pinching the hose along its length until you find a soft/weak spot and thats it!

Might have been a contributing cause to the wear in your pump too, oil starvation!

Very common on brake lines too, not very often checked and when getting a brake imbalance normally the caliper or slides that are blamed!

If you do change a brake caliper or cylinders, check hoses too for external cracking, damage, corrosion of the end fittings, and collapse.

If any of the above or just caution, change as a matter of course, worth it for an extra few quid!!

Any help let me know and see what I can do.

  3. Be there Saturday for my Grandsons Birthday.

Son and family there all weekend with the Matador.

Weather forecast needs waterproofs but hey ho.............

I will take note of vehicles and names and see if I can match them up and say hello.

Hoping to get there all day saturday, if not Sunday afternoon!

  4. I went last year and it really is a belting show but remember you can not leave early on Sunday

I dont stay over night (havent the appropriate hall pass!!) and I think im only going Saturday. Most of the Cheshire MVT will be there and im friends with Rob Langley, one of the commitee guys.

Missus doesnt like `Green` stuff so no beer tent for me either!!!!

Oh dear, buyer beware! I've found the ad on Car and Classic. What a monstrosity! If that's a Moke prototype I'll eat my hat! In fact if it's a Moke I'll eat my hat! How do these people get away with advertising things that are clearly not what they say they are?

I'm pleased to learn that you have made contact with someone who worked on the early Mokes and that you are going to see him on Wednesday. Hopefully he will be able to clear up a few things that have been puzzling us.

Is this the same Moke that you say you saw last night on Ebay? I think it probably is.

Bloody hell mate, who was playing that day....???

  8. Hi all

This is probably best suited to the Aussie con fraternity on this forum.

I need to pick up a brand new Austin Champ chassis from Melbourne and I am in Sydney. I have enquired with a few car carrier companies and most need the vehicle to be driven so they can load it up on the car carrier. Another option is to fly down to Melourne and hire a one way trailer and car. Otherwise only other option is to drive with my own car and trailer from Sydney to Melbourne and back. Hmmmm Any suggestions anyone?

    Thanks

    Simon

Go for the drive, take missus or mate. Stop off at memorial museum at Canberra (i think), make it an overnite, few beers, sights etc. Can't beat it, only bout 11 hrs drive, share driving and hell of a lot cheaper than paying transport! ;)

  9. Before the hand of doom descends and condemns the motor to the scrap bin try some simple things and ask yourself a few questions.

    For example,

Has the jeep stood for some time without starting,

Have you been starting it often but only static running the engine,

Have you lost coolant from the radiator without seeing any obvious leak,

    Do a simple compression test

Has your engine oil changed colour to a dull grey and/or have you got a white sludge build up on the dip stick lid

The 'smoke' that you see at the filler tube does it smell of burnt oil

It may be as simple as condensation in the crank case or it may be something a bit more sinister try a few tests and answer the questions first.

    Pete

As Pete says, with the warm weather weve had here, condensation will build up in the crankcase and mix with the oil causing `Mayonnaise` in the oil. If a vehicle is only static run up, even hot sometimes this isnt enough to burn it off. Ideally it needs a run out every week if being stored, keeps the cobwebs at bay too.

I used to service an old womans renault 5 years ago, only used it to go the shops half mile up the road once a week!

first thing i would do is take the scenic route to the workshops after collecting and shhot up the motorway. Should have seen the cr*p that used to blow out the exhaust every time, then clear up eventually!!

I know its difficult to take it for a run all the time but even in and out the garage, up the drive ets, HELL, across the lawn and imagine yourself in the hedgerows of Normandy (Please wear correct combat uniform and take lots of pics!!) as they were built to do! When you get arrested, questioned and put in the padded cell, just remember.....YOU DONT KNOW ME!!!! :nut:

  10. Thanks guys! I've a Sthil chainsaw that has a cracked ally oil way. I don't want to scrap the saw, but new parts are are uneconomic.

In which case (don't laugh or fob this off) liquid metal!! Not a bodge as many think. Clean all paint and residue off surface, open crack if need be for better penetration. Rough surface for better adhesion. I use brake cleaner to deep clean after all this and mix n apply liquid metal. Leave overnights best and lasts an age!

As an example, I repaired a hairline crack in my fuel pump on my Mercedes sprinter til I had time to fit New unit, lasted a month til changed and still dry!!!

  11. Hi James,

    you can use silver solder on steel, for more info, check this out ;

    http://www.cupalloys.co.uk/best_practice/[/QUOT

Silver solder is ok on steel and other metals, even dissimilar ones.

I have used it even on hydraulic fittings, good pressure ratings.

Secret is cleanliness, clean and flux the area well!

Don't mig it as it will open a can of worms, steel will be a lot thinner inside and you WILL blow holes in it.

No professional tank repairer near you, even just to advise? I have a good one here that does tank and radiator/cooler repairs, a lot do both!

Where in Vic are you? My brother in law is a hydraulics engineer there, lives in Geelong area, he will know the local repairers and can reccomend!

  12. I cannot comment on your current battery (pun intended) ! but I use an Optimate trickle charger on my Jeep's 6v battery and it has been great, battery has lasted five years and always fully charged when needed. I used one on my Honda Fireblade after having two batteries in two years once I fitted an Optimate I had the same battery on it and going strong 6 years later ! Even if you buy a new battery to be sure, I would recommend fitting an Optimate or similar to prolong it's life :-)

I was going to suggest a trickle charger, especially as its not a daily driver. It will condition your battery, keep it at its peak and you can keep it connected without worry, especially if you get what's called an "intelligent" one.

  13. I've this several times and its ok if you take your time, don't rush, clean everything properly and don't overheat the ally. Repairs have lasted well.-

Used to sell this stuff in halfords and motorbikes. Ideal for cracked and broken gearbox housings. Cast too. Heated of some excellent results in the classic car mags. Cleanliness is the secret, if you think it's clean then do it again to be sure. Not sure if you need a flux tho! Probably wouldn't hurt to TIN the surfaces too before hand.

  14. Here's to looking forward to another great post with lots of pics. Nice set up Howard :cool2:, love the spray booth:wow: (and I spotted the Airborne Dozer too) Gerry

Do I get half a prize caus I spotted the booth but not the dozer!! Lol

Nice job you are ding there nd nice booth.....:D

  15. You could try Stevson Motors, 0121 472 1702. They specialise in rebuilding these types of shockers.

You used to be able to buy shocks oil desperately. What about forks oil used in motorbikes? I'm a hydraulics engineer and can help decipher an oil code if not clear! Bottle Jack oil can be just an ordinary hydraulic 46 grade oil which is what I normally top them up with after repair.

  16. Re the Militant;-

Whilst in very bad taste & most upsetting (especially being as I'm trying to find one to photograph & measure up), you have to hand it to the grab operator for both enjoying his work, & being quite deft on the controls.

Personally I think the Millie put up a brave fight. She'll be 40 or 50 Nissans by now.

    H

I recon we go round to the guys house and beat him up with the tyre iron off the Millie...........MILLIES REVENGE!!!:mad:

  17. Hi, I tried to reply earlier but cound't log in.

We had a Ford prefect a few yrs back as my wife wanted 1. That was a 1960 107E (100e shape with 105e mech.s) It had Trico vacuum wipers so I would suggest checking in the classic car world.

Also just found this- you may have already seen it ?

    Regards Gerry

Yep, im a classic Ford man and the 100e did have Tryco wipers.

Get in touch with the Ford 100e owners club, they willl have a technical guy who can help.
