  1. In my humble experience, arguments about wings - v - medals aside, medals and ribbons are a thorny subject..........

It is difficult to start differentiating between British gallantry awards and "service" (campaign) awards........for example, thousands of soldiers qualified for service awards (eg: Africa, Italy, Burma, etc) and many went through the thickest of action or equally traumatic circumstances without ever seeing any Gallantry award, very few achieving such notice..........and the same awards frequently went to those in rear areas who saw no conflict at all............to those who have served and qualified for medals, they represent far more than a simple flash of coloured ribbon....it's what lies behind each and every award, which includes in many cases vivid and dramatic pasts, memories, emotions, suffering and experiences....the ribbon is just the sign to that gateway that's often firmly closed by veterans of all ages......

I guess the "safest" option is represent the uniform and unit but leave out any thought of wearing ribbons that haven't been awarded or personally earned through either being somewhere or time served.........as mentioned, it's a sensitive subject that will never be resolved to suit all opinions...........

I wear wartime uniform to compliment my wartime motorbikes at various events and I'm entitled to wear both my former rank and medal ribbons for service and time-earned................but rarely do........the actual uniform is of far more interest than any feature of ribbons.........:-D (and besides that, I'd have to find 'em buried somewhere deep in me sock drawer......:()

Thanks for all the advice, I think just insignia is best which is how I have it now. My problem is I look SOOOO naked against all the guys depicting YANKS!!

As mentioned about the 1940`s service dance, there was the odd (very odd in some cases!!) Home Guard and mostly either civvies or Yanks!!

Felt a bit out of it in just my BD with insignia!

  2. A finance company is trying to sell the defunct Liverpool dukws, apparently they are in a bit of a poor state and been vandalised while in storage

The one they used in Cammell Laird Shipyard for the boyancy teste is in ok condition as been in the yard since before trials! Ive got pics of it being lifted out of the dry dock after it failed boyancy tests, think its still parked up in the yard there!!!

I dont think these would be very viable projects tho, they have been significantly altered inside and out.

The only part I recognised inside was the dash and hull, everything else is missing. Major internal and external surgery has been performed for seats, safety and roadworthyness.

Try to dig pics out when I get a minute

  3. Most people would say that any kind of medal for valour would be a no no unless you have earned it.

The only campaign medal which would have been issued by this time would have been the Africa Star.

If you look old enough to be a pre-war Territorial (12 years service) you could wear the Territorial Efficiency Medal.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Efficiency_Medal

Most people would say however don't wear medals/ribbons you are not entitled to.

    I understand that and respect.

I also wish to represent and pay homage to all those that served and paid the ultimate sacrifice!

I wear the para wings and never done a 'drop'!

I went to the dance last night in BD and trousers. Load of yanks in attendance, I was only para. They had ribbons and trade badges/awards.

I would NEVER wear gallantry ribbons, only service!

As for age, I am 47!

    What about 39-45

    What about Long service etc

  4. I have just completed my first ww2 para uniform/equipment representing a para of 1944. I have just attended a local 1940's weekend to break it all in, even in the rain today 'manning my post' . Really enjoyed myself, chatting to veterans and kids about my kit and representation.

My query is what medal ribbon bar would be reasonably appropriate for a Sergeant of Parachute Regiment 1944? Also what order would they be in? I could work it out but wouldn't wish to make a silly "Newbie" mistake.

Any hints and tips greatly appreciated.

I am hoping to be out collecting for the British Legion this weekend with my local MVT and attend a couple of events for Rememberance.

    thanks in advance

  5. As one vetran said to me 'I can't see why you lot are so excited about kit looking old. If it got old and worn we used to Bu88er off to the stores and get new'. ;)

It was its first outing today and didnt want to look like the `newbie` of the bunch!!!

All worked out ok, local paper had me posing, few RAF re-enactors there and SAS LRDG (Good to talk to you Luke!) but I was only Para.

Good to meet like minded and the public, got the bug now!!

  6. Just go outside with the weekend weather forcast. You'll be soacked , blown inside out and flat in the mud! :-D It'll age you and the kit.

Mate, im already aged....!!!! Trying to get my kit to catch up wiyh me!!!!:cool2:

It got hand washed, no detergent buy with softner (im delicate you know...!) and all hung to dry inside. If not done by morning its getting a 10 min blast on cool in the tumble dryer!!!

  7. Well i have the same question, but less time to prepare. I also have a SOF battledress blouse, pants and Dennison to wash tonight. Stuff only arrived today and got a 1940 weekend starting tomorrow.

NEED to wash the newness out of it, whats the consensus people??

Wash warm by hand, baby oil, flat dry?

Wool setting on machine and cool dry? Hang dry?

    What about the Dennison??

I spoke to SOF today and they didnt know, more worried about shrinking than itching!

Any advice or words of wisdom?

Dont mention ther petrol method, missus isnt happy with the new smell in the house never mind anything else!!!

  8. Only some users such as the MOD can still use Halon extinguishers, all others should have been decommissioned by 2003. In practice MOD went over to FM200 for fixed extinguishers and CO2 for removables.

    Andy

I have just installed two Halon systems in the engine rooms of two new ferries for the Scottish isles! Complete with storage tanks, overhead pipework and supply hoses. System wasn't charged tho and subsequently pressure tested by Lloyds and certified ok.

  9. Good afternoon all, and hello from a drizzly Lincolnshire not far from RAF Coningsby.

I am a long time Land Roverist with a healthy interest in all things mechanical, be they agricultural, plant, industrial, or road haulage. Up until a couple of years ago I worked as a Directional Driller on a 50 ton mobile rig, but following a serious RTA (no more motorcycles for me) in 2010, my days of humping heavy drilling kit about for a living are sadly behind me.

To make up for the lack of "kit" in my day job I have just realised a long time dream to purchase something of my own, in the shape of an ex RAF FVRDE Scammell Explorer.

So that's me more or less, I look forward to working my way through the pages here within and speaking with some of you soon :)

    Regards, Steve.

Hello there friend. I am for the north west of UK but currently on a week's break in DIGBY in a cottage with my better half! Exploring Bomber County. Just done my Just Jane day at East Kirkby. Can I just reccomend this to EVERYONE, even if nit into planes they have a small vehicle museum onsite too. Even got a"visiting " Dakota in the hangar!

  10. Hi Maurice,

That would be balata belt, rubberised canvas belting, often used for packing under bodies, exhaust mounting straps, etc. It was not done to save rubber, it is in fact flat drive belt with many other uses, like axle check straps, etc.

    regards, Richard

Also could use conveyor belt. Plenty of old stuff about. Got a local reclaim or scrap metal dealers? Use conveyors? Local company that fits them for off cuts?

  11. I get old copies of the Times sent to me and came across this book review. The Guns at Last Light by Rick Atkinson (an American I believe) the review is by Michael Tillotson. In it Mr Tillotson states ......the Sherman duplex drive swimming tanks, critical to the first hour on the D Day beaches had to be shipped back to the States for conversion to amphibians----a task beyond British industry. I find this statement incredible and without evidence a slur. What do others think about this as I have never heard of it.

I reckon we have a fite to decide............not just yet tho, after tea!!:cool2:

  12. A quick question for the collective - any ideas about best prices for pallet delivery at the moment? I've got a heat exchanger I want moving from Tavistock to Wellingborough.

    Andy

think there's a company called PALLETFORCE. All our works deliveries on pallets come via TUFFNELLS.

  13. Here are some more from the same source. These are almost certainly not ex military but some are of a type which were impressed:.

    Great pics, thanks for sharing.

Love the last picture, reminds me of the sayimg "If in doubt, give it a clout!!" ;)

Love the use of the 20lb precission instrument!!:wow:

  14. Hi,

You may have misunderstood the manual as the bisector is normally lubricated with special expander grease, I use Lockheed Expander Grease, do not over grease. For the transverse wheel cylinder, it is Lockheed Rubber Grease as it is safe to use in the seal area. The Lockheed name is now changed to Delphi, and if you cannot get that brand there are other suppliers.

    try this one;

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Millers-Oils-Red-Rubber-Grease-500g-Tub-for-Brake-Seals-/360413202450

Get it from most decent motor factors. Don't bother with the likes of motorworld or halfords, you will pay the earth! Go to one the trade use, no more than £10,00 for 500ml tin! I get it by the case.

  15. Good to see a man who saves historic aircraft for future generations ! Where would we be now without the same type of chaps who preserved the Spitfires and all the other great old Warbirds all those years ago ? :-D

AND old rusty green things with tracks and wheels...!

  16. Missus just heared on the news that one of the Thames` DUKW has sunk!

No further info, tried to google but just get their website and promo photos.

Apparently 30 people had to be rescued and caught fire causing passengers to go overboard!

    Any further info??

  17. I seem to be having a similar problem with my WC51. On an ANZAC day excursion, after running well for a year she decided to suddenly run rough as and backfire alot.

She now does not want to idle without full choke or alternately throttle being out and lacks power on the upgrades or when being worked.

I have checked the carby and other than it being a little wet at the lower housing (Has the carby for a Chev Cargo on her) that is all good. Replaced/gapped plugs, checked air/fuel mix, checked gap and cleaned points, replaced manifold gasket (As noticed it had blown), new exhaust pipe to manifold, cleaned air filter to ensure good air flow through there..

I dont have a timing light but have used my eye-crometer, what else could i check.

Coil mate! Could be suspect and can go at anytime

  18. Last week I bought 2 carrier wheels , fair condition , but one rubber tyre is much larger than the other .

Have they been manufactured with different tyres ( size ) ?

I remember one of the resto carrier threads mentioned this. Think the American/ Canadian rubber is different to the UK one's.

I'm no expert on these but I'm waiting to be corrected by the carrier fraternity!
