  1. Mixing a gallon can of any type takes a long time (your average squaddie would soon get bored)   ,  household emulsion , garage floor paint , vehicle paints  -  I use wood battens approx. 2"x 3/16" x  18" long , sometimes I use a fancy spiral stirrer in a Makita  0 to 500rpm drill , even this can't be trusted so I still use a batten (I cut them on my circular saw). IMHO - I very much doubt if IRR brush finish was correctly prepared , probably more chance of the spray finish getting a proper stirr.

  2. It may have changed  ?

A good few years ago , NATO pintles were being supplied to the MOD by D-B  in Red Oxide finish .  I understand the instructions were to leave them in Red Oxide - this was to make preparations for magnetic particle crack detection easier.

    also I purchased this book

    https://classicenginesmodernfuel.org.uk/

On a Land Rover = not so many parts that have a possibility of rubber degradation.   The main risk seems to be acidic water settling in base of tanks & carburettor.  The book above - the researcher found erosion in his own car's carb. float-chamber.

As always with the internet there are those who spread fear, I don't think it beyond the intelligence of the oil major/suppliers chemists to sort out without buying extra bottles of additive.

You can always lay your Rover up for 6 months and sit it out . By April 1st  2022  -  we should know the real truth from the myths.

In the first instance I am trying to find a methodolgy that can be used without a full engine rebuild.    This is a brand new engine which the previous owner did not drain properly after last running it.  The tradional method used by this company putting the Block in an oven would preclude this.

Is the block  'wet-linered'    ?    , if it is - fully dismantle and off to a specialist for material analysis.  IMHO - stoving and a peened weld would be best.

  5. I have just had a quick look at  6 qty.   NT  by Pressed Steel Co(Scotland)  / Rootes Pressings Ltd.   43EN92  , 08ES30 ,  ??ES64 or 69 (can't read own writing)  3 I can't get to rear as sardine garaged.   Four have coloured decals - mostly peeled off (these seem on the original DBG paint).     These all have brass hex. bailers in floor, never converted to bowser flap.

Another much later (possibly final contract)  SANKEY plated  26GB88 - body construction welded sides slightly different , no floor drain holes but has factory fitted  'transom' flap  - these were kept well greased to aid river crossings.

The original reflector triangles - all correct positions - I think.

All of them purchased approx.  1985  ,  all at least two coats of    DP paint.  Of the ones I have been able to check the rear(s) - no decals/markings other than some with painted VRM.

What Esso says about their 'super'  - it seems E10 with most brands of super unleaded will be a max. of 5% ethanol from September.   When tankers are leading from only about 6 terminals, the name on the pump does not mean a great difference.  BP,Shell,Esso.    The NE is supplied from what was Shell Jarrow Dry Terminal (now it's Prax , the other of the BIG two  ISTR is Greenergy.  Scotland is supplied from Grangemouth.

It seems super unleaded supply is different for North East England, South West England and Scotland- where it seems from Sept. you will not be able to avoid 10% ethanol.   The choice will be a 'super' or E10 with regional variation.

  7. You probably got the wrong size ,  if it were near I would probably dress to fit using a Dreadnought file.  The ones I have seen are just lead / alloy same as terminal posts.  Some 'quality' replacement clamps are copper/chromed or tinned.    So copper is hardly a dissimilar metal that could cause problems.   I have a cheapish reamer , like a cheap pencil sharpener - to re-profile terminals , can be tough going - they seem a alloy not just soft lead.

  8. Redwood  (European Pine) is not to be sniffed at and is more durable than many softwoods , it can be further improved by VacVac treatment which when dry takes paint OK.    Scandanavian / Russian/Baltic  "Unsorted" is the best followed by 4ths & 5ths  -  all good joinery.

  9. It may be worth consulting with a fork-truck specialist who deals with all makes / ages  inc. those of USA origins such as Hyster.  Not so common now but much of this construction was used on early trucks ,  the larger dia. may have been better over small dia. mast pulleys  ?

It could even have a use for boom section extension on telescopic cranes.

Renold was/is big but by no means having a monopoly , still worth asking their Technical Dept for opinion.

I doubt if it is so special ,  chain of this type used to be imported from Czechoslovakia into UK by the mile - a BIG importer was actually  ISO-Speedic.

    Hi all,

Bit a strange one this! I need some roller chain for a Cletrac winch but it would appear to be a very odd size!

    dimensions are

    1" pitch, 9/16 roller, 5/8 wide

so far it has stumped my local suppliers , so any suggestions would be great.

    Thanks

Have you contacted  RENOLD  or sifted through their on-line catalogue.   First blush the size would appear quite off-shelf for transmission ,  this type of chain also used on lifting blocks & will be proofed.

Where did I mention 'user name', I was referring to his business contact details at the bottom left of the listing?

So  -  report that situation to Companies House ,  they will send the polis around.    Long past the stage of  'trading whilst insolvent' ,  if ever he was going to recover and debts he was due - should have done so years ago.

  12. Hardly - out of order,  a Ebay  'User name' is no different to on this Forum  , I could change mine to  RuxyLtd.   Putting  Ltd on the end is by implication of Limited status but it seems a grey area in law , expensive law requiring proof - evidence that can be accepted by a court of law.   However to go further than that on Ebay ,  such as a Shop or seller claiming Limited status but such as 'wound-up'  ,  dissolved ,  liquidated  (other than dormant status)  - then ISTR that is a criminal act.

  13. I assume the museum next to the Nissan plant is the North East ,Land,Sea & Air Museum.    I don't live that far away , I doubt if there is any British Tanks ,  possibly a local Sherman garaged there when not on summer circuit  ?       When the NEMVG  lost their storage/museum near Gosforth - the situation was on the slide and that was 4 decades ago.

  14. Disgusting situation  , its the North/South divide - where can a party of school children be taken to view a gun-tank or private individual go in the North of England  ? or for that matter Scotland.  State museums have a education responsibility..

During WW2 the brass caps the WD used were completely plain and unmarked from what I've seen, and I suspect this practice continued post war.

I've never understood why a broad arrow wasn't cast into them.

Yes  ,  I too would have expected a broad arrow or letters  WD on the cap.

Most cans where the company name is embossed on the side such as Pratts, BP, Shell, Esso   etc.  - you can easy match with a brass cap.   However I have never seen a can embossed with  Anglo American Oil to which the AAO Co. Ltd.  caps can be married with.

I have a book  "Pioneers of Petrol"  about Carless Capel & Leonard , good early history about import of oil ,  early history of  Launch Spirit, Motor Spirit , Aviation Spirit and how the word Petrol came about.

As a kid I can remember taking such cans to the local ironmonger to get filled with paraffin  for  Aladdin  &  Tilley lamps + brooder heaters.  I can't remember the names on the cans or caps - ISTR the cans were heavier steel construction , don't recall this lighter soldered construction , but that was abt. 60 years ago.

  16. Yes -  you have me convinced -  ground station for a man-portable to get more aerial sections up to improve Tx/Rx .  The sections are very slender & light , I think for back-packing ?    It is the spigot ends that have me  ?   possibly some sort of bayonet fitting collector to hold the top firm to mount the antenna on.

Possibly the sort of equipment that few survived  ?

I think would need a separate earth as the guy ropes & wood sections would not give any continuity.

  17. Hi  ,  the person whom I am trying to dispose of , he had done a search of RAF equipment & drew a blank.  Actually he lives nearer to a seller of uniforms , medals & all militaria than I  ,  probable he would best take them there for best opinion  ?   Yes - the oxygen supply did make me wonder , goggles do have that "open-cockpit" look ,   am aware much RAF kit is coloured green.

  18. Mystery kit  ?                      I would be interested to know ,  no markings , no clues.   Does look very WD  ,   WW2 era  ?

May be suitable for  1:1  diorama ,  BUT  seems only a part of ?

Tree-wood parts  - n o dry-rot or wood-worm ,  white on canvas may look like mildew , but canvas is dry & sound.

Among some stuff , asked to dispose of by a Show/Autojumbler  - sickened off scene by Covid-19

If interested - make me an offer  £   ,  collection mid-Wearddale  or you pay  £  shipping.

  19. Uncertain about this , seems WW2  era.  ?         Seems similar to a aerial wire  (civvy) on a spool & axle on roller knife-edges  -  crossbow used to fire a cord over some very high trees to lay it on canopy - it seemed the idea.  Communications to light aircraft & helo.

May be suitable for a  1:1  diorama

Aged & some broken bits to outer sheath.      Reel dia. is abt.  12"

Among stuff I was recently asked to get rid of by a Show/Autojumbler sickened off-scene  by Covid-19.

If interested - make me an offer £  ,  collection  mid-Weirddale or you pay £ shipping.

  20. I think I have seen these worn by such as Scorpion crew  ?

One has a slight rust stain - should brush off.    Goggles are OK.
