  1. I only posted this because it was MV related and X'mas seasonal  'silly season'  possibly threewheeler could tell me more of the vehicle (I have a tracked interest but more so wheeled)  also being nosey - the real truth.

That hut wasn't at Cassop, it was closer to Sherburn.

Sherburn included , I know the area / history - mining / railways / WW2  -   the first hous I purchased  1975 , not too far away with a distant view of the cathedral .  That view would still be possible , just loads of new houses in what were fields.

  3. Ethanol attack on soldered brass fuel tank float  ?     Not what I would expect - been watching expected Ethanol problems .  Garage trade mechanics recently telling me it's all a myth  ?      Considering the best quality Classic tanks were made from Terne steel (inc. Rolls Royce)  - if this coating of tin/lead alloy is affected (I had anticipated) then I think it would be regular news  ?    Ethanol attack to the many grades of brass - I would doubt that , still interesting comment.

  4. I'm not aware of any WW2  WD site at Cassop.    The nearest such to the city centre would be the two rows of pre-fabricated sectional concrete buildings (barracks originaly for the RAF) demolished for new building just after Y2K, These were on the University Science Site , hill incline  just west of the Engineering Building.

  5. Film props - if you wish to be impressed  , stop for a coffee break or better still book in advance a full English breakfast in the end carriage at Bassenthwaite Lake Station  - the SNCF loco. and carriages used in the (made for) the 2017 production of Agatha Christie's  -  Murder on the Orient Express.  God only knows how many £$ it all cost  ?   Apparently the carriages are body width a little out of gauge to make camera access better.

  6. i don't think your 6-way switch is a  PRC5410 (Defender)  , ISTR they have  1/4" Lucar blades - that switch is probably a Series that had screw -tag terminals (as S3)  , also there are indications it is a S2A 'keyswitch type' ,  the wiring is modified with these tags & insulation sleeve. IIRC the switch internal/external tracks are same regardless of model.  IIRC the early S2A keys-barrel witch also had 1/4" Lucars.

You could do a repair using Araldite epoxy (original slow set) - however you are trusting to luck.

If you find  www. Land-Rover-Lightweight website , wiring diagrams , find the IR diagram - to right hand side you will find a 'truth-table' to check for correct operation , using terminal numbers and a AVO / test lamp.

  7. As a guide ,  McGreggor  (down Wales)  offered me a good runner  T34/85  delivered to Co. Durham  -  late 1993/94  for  £10,000  .  I understand he had a few ,  a guide - possibly  -v-  Land Registry published house prices in your area.  £ inflation on Google ??

All good stuff thank you. I'd love to get a canvas if you could let me have the details please. I'm not sure now original the interior is, I'm told it suffered in the caverns. Current interior image attached. Thank you.

Your truck would have suffered at the Cavern Museum ,  I went there - the main reason to view the LRDG Chevrolet  (now with IWM)  .  ISTR the nearest you could approach was 2m , considering the well preserved state ex-Libya  - I was shocked by dampness on this & other vehicles - the garaging climate was not good , seemed to me the  'authorities'  were more £ commercial than interested in corrosion prevention.

Ok chaps. For a carved in stone, straight from the horses mouth answer.

I haven’t feckin got one but I will get one with the help of Lord John Attlee, House of Lords who shows a great interest in this subject being a military vehicle owner.

We at tanks a lot used to do a simple off road test where if you could spell your name you probably passed. Tracking around the fields with a DVSA examiner watching from a distanc trying not to loose a wellington.

Then  things changed and the test had to be done on the public highway with a road registered taxed and insured vehicle. We adapted an Argocat with mondeo wing mirrors and things went well for several years . If a student did bounce it of a parked car things were normally taken care of on the spot with a fist full of cash or a drive in a tank back on the farm. Then they banned it saying it was to small. I said it was track laying  lever steering and the principle was the same as all tracked vehicles plus it was much safer for other road users. They threatened to revoke all of my past customer passes going back years if I made a fuss.

Then DVSA said we had to use a 432 and the test would be a mixture of on and off road. After a few months they banned them.

Then  DVSA said we had to use CVRT and the whole test had to be carried out on the public highway after a few months they banned them.

They told me that all military tracked vehicles were a driving platform designed for two a driver and commander and were unsuitable. I said I would modify one and they responded. It can’t be modified who could say if it was suitable.

The only option was to splash out on a very special Cat challenger tracked tractor from a vineyard in France with extra thin 25 inch tracks. The wheels had to be pulled in to so the overall width of the vehicle was within 2.55 m.The big yellow monster cost £58,000 plus vat and cost a hatful to run the little wheels are £600 each and the tracks are about £15,000 and don’t even ask about insurance.

it’s come to my attention a couple of people have taken a test recently in a military vehicle which I’m delighted to hear. It means I can sell the Cat tractor and go back to using one of the dozens of  military machines again I have parked all around Tanks a lot.

I have written to all at the DVSA  including Craig’s Harman who unfortunately is not in our area anymore who was genuinely a breath of fresh air and the very helpful Lord Attlee and I’m waiting for permission and an apology and compensation.. If this is not forthcoming I would expect them to revoke and passes issued in tracked military vehicles going back three years when they insisted on Tanks a lot buying the Cat challenger . Have we been victimised, or is their an underground movement to stop or slowdown the amount of H licence places available. Or am I just becoming a bitter twisted syndicalism old barstard.

Thanks for the supportive comments, it does get a bit lonely out here, it's like wandering around a well guarded bastion all on your own trying to find it's weak point when you only got one cannon ball.

I have no intention of reading through this thread , to revise your environmental concerns.  Just wondered - have you ever used a EIR  (environmental information request)  , under the Environmental Information Regulations.  This was forced on UK by EEC and I think it is still on the statute book.   Operates similar to  FOIR  (freedom of information request).  Phrase your enquiry(s) just right and you can cause the 'authorities' some grief totally  £ f.o.c.  until they hit a search costs limit and then they will invoice before supply.

  11. Knowing  WD's past history , in particular with the Beverley Museum {as was).  he being presently the only person with access to this type of aged document - then if it were me , then I would probably do likewise - be a 'spoiler'.   For a person to pass off as a legit. Ebay sale or similar action , whilst not illegal it is morally wrong.   It's not exactly plagiarism , BUT - I would treat it as such and take umbrage..

  12. The late L'wt  FFR wings with inbuilt co-ax boxes , the spade shaped hinged lids are secured with  Dzus (made in USA)  1/4 turn fastners .  Oddie would have been better for reliability, perhaps the Dzus being plastic was specified because they can't create electrical noise ?

And yes,  Dzus - you need the correct size plain blade screwdriver in your pocket  !    ill-fitting & coins just damage the plastic until they don't readily release.

What you have is unorthodox kit.

If they are Oddie then the 1/4 turn would be scratching away at the wire retainer at every bump in the road.

  13. Would a TUAAM on wing give real improvement   TX/RX   ?     A PRC 351  Man-Pack ,  secure t- he carry frame (there were 2 or 3+ options) in a vehicle , if you fit a 20W   VHF amplifier - that is what makes it a PRC 352 (vehicle mount)  with improved range  and I believe after that -there would be no more advantage possible over the standard whip-aerial.

A man-pack rig /Dexion tends to be a low £  FFR  (compared to a URS) as a excuse to mount TUAAM boxes , glassfibre rods & flags.   As demob - I have my doubts.

  14. Sorry - returning to coatings on steering wheels.    I have observed that some vintage car steering wheels are tightly wrapped with a black cord to give grip.  I noticed this on the  Invicta  (the last Top Gear prog.)    Does anyone know exactly what this black cord is  ?
