It is sad that after 38 years the Airborne forces museum is closing on fri.Dec 21st, for those who have not visited it yet ought to see this unique collection, where else can you see a Jeep on its original airdrop platform, how about giving it a good farewell by having an informal MV gathering there on Sat 15th Dec ? Who would be interested in attending ?

weight of the truck on the rear makes the front of the towing Militant very light and can make steering interesting. :-o
mmm... yes reminds me of the days of my old Military L/R 11a 109" with harvey frost crane...found its lifting capacity when tried suspend towing a crashed Chevy blazer....err ended up waiving the l/r front wheels in the air..........
-
Impresive sight, but why was the dolly used? does the crane not operate on your Milly?
-
There is also the chance to drive your mv, light/medium wt. around the adjacent Mercedes Benz off road course, where you can get stuck in the mud or sink in the pond :-D or just watch the sillyness
-
Hi Nick
yes got the oil, at 26 squid and a tow rope if you are going A3 in the dodge
And don't sink the Jeep again in the pond on the off road course this year !!

Remains of an airportable gmc after the parachute failed to open?......nice gmc badge though!

They were in Van Dam's yard on the Dutch/German border nr. Roermond, we bought 8 Jimmys in 1985 for a film production and drove them all back to UK with an M151 Mutt in the back.
Certainly lots were saved for preservation, at the time I think they cost about £1200 each.
The 8 we had were sold after the film, who knows, an HMVF member may now own one of them

Alas this photo was taken over 20 years ago in a yard in the Netherlands

I asked Tony Sudds whilst rebuilding my Jeep, I'm sure he said exhaust should be painted either black or green depending on year of production, ..sprayed mine mat black with some heatproof paint

I seem to remember thats how the first "Big foot" monster truck was created in the US by useing surplus wheels and tyres from these landtrains

An interesting 1956-8 Australian Jeep replacement 4x4 "Freighter Imp" is for sale in Oz, has a Standard vanguard engine, torsion bar suspension, bares strong similarities to Austin Gipsy and Champ

We always knew them as the Trewhella tree winch, as you say a bit slow and cumbersome, we had a monkey winch years ago and it was often used to recover vehicles, got us out of trouble numerous times.

Its always good to have friends around to help out in emergencies.....like when the handbrake wouldn't hold on my Hippo ........

My mistake, meant 1960. How things have changed, years ago ther was an "armoured car " category in the list of exempted vehicles, very usefull then with lots of dingo's and humber pigs coming out of service.
I MOT my Dodge wc52 every year, with no problem, lucky to find a very understanding MOT tester. It seems still a lot of Dodge owners are still claiming exemption, but they do not qualify, even a winch truck is below the 3500kg gross weight
-
I think it is the defunct news letter you mention, its all a few years old, last newsletter 2001, have a look
-
just found it through a link, I'll try and find it again
-
Seems the armoured car category I mentioned earlier has long since been deleted, there is a lot discussion on the Ferret register newsletter re MOT'S it seems post 1962 vehicles need an MOT
-
-
Armoured cars are classed as an exempt mot vehicle
-
Steve, remember to bring plenty of oil......
