No expert on these, but that looks to be the 180 gallon water bowser stuck on what I would guess is Howard muck spreader trailer chassis. Very common conversion. Basically as the original trailer tyres deteriorate, being weird sizes and the fact that the water tanks will literally last forever, they would get transplanted. And based off the image, it’s still delivering water 70+ years on.

Progress on the 5kv. Ive managed to pick up a replacement rolling chassis. Although the trailer will be loosing some of it original identity. The condition of the replacement frame is mint. Will restore really well. I’ve stripped all the component parts. There were a few minor differences between the two frames, which I have had to reconstruct. These changes are now complete So ready to be sent off blasting.

Hi Adrian. I would say, based of what I can see. This is the 100 gallon water bowser on an original chassis. The bit that makes it look like a different chassis configuration is a later add on. The bowser chassis is unique as far as I’m aware to just the bowser…. The construction looks the same. I have attached an image. The bit in blue is the same on this one in France. The two bits in red have been cut off. And the additional steel frame has been retro fitted. Guessing later for maybe agricultural purposes. The trailer looks a very good candidate for a restoration? Assume it already belongs to a military collector. Gauging off the other trailers?? If not it would be nice to see someone buy it and restore it. I would gladly supply the missing measurements to reconstruct the bits that have been removed. Cracking find.!!!!

There are practicalities with the GS trailers. The main one in that you can use it to put stuff in!! All that said, and as sad it sounds there’s a unique look with the water bowser. Very unusual too see at a show. I guess you would be looking for the 180 gallon version? Ian L on this forum has restored the bigger trailer. Finding all the rare parts is half the fun. Sure it can cost few more £££, I’m of the opinion more you put in the more you get out. Whether that financial or just enjoyment. We all know you won’t make money from restoring🤣🤣🤣

Anyone with experience on the Hartford Shock Absorber? I have a few questions. I’ve split all mine down. Blasted and painted. I need to push in new rubbers and bushes? Very tight fit… how do they go in? Second question. The friction discs are asbestos. Should I re use these? I have a spare shock absorber that has wooden friction discs?

Today’s progress. The original stowage bins, completely beyond repair. They were crumbling under there own weight. Just enough left of them to take a patten. I managed to source a second set of bins of 6kv generator. I thought these would be straight swap, but unfortunately the steel construction is very different. So I have had to take to some construction.

Anyone reading this post, I have created a small list of things I’m on the hunt for to aid the restoration. I guess a long shot, If anyone has parts that may help the restoration please message me with what you have. I’m in the need of…… Good air filter Fan blade Valves Petrol tank Spun cowl for the generator Over wing Stowage bins Pair, Brass latches to lock the bins. Oil Sump T plate. (Original) Inline electrical fuses. Head gasket Radiator manly looking for a good cowl. User Manual I would consider a complete engine unit if the price and condition was good.

The strip down of the engine has begun. The head bolts had rusted almost to nothing! Only way to remove was to drill them out! The external corrosion of the engine was that bad, my anticipation of the internals wasn’t holding much hope. Pleasantly surprised with the internal condition. So much so I feel with a few replacement parts the engine will run again.

Any spare time I have at the minute is spent on the 5Kv trailer, I’ve neglected the main restoration on the stores trailer. So I thought I would post some pictures of progress. Chassis has been sent to the blasters, returned, primed, few coats of top. New floor sourced, cut, thin coat primer, then welded on. So now onto fabricating the lockers.

I do remember John, you saying it was very crusty!! Worth saving? Erm yes… but probably should be someone with magic wand! This resto I think will be board line. More I get into stripping The more issue/ challenges I keep finding! Scrap pile is slowly building of bits I some how need to remanufacture, locate replacements . Photos thus far.
