  1. Just taken some photos of the spare i have in my garage. There is a plastic sleeve which contains the return spring and is held in place by the thin nut. Cant post the pics from ipad! The sleeve should be hard against the pinion and only moves when the drive shaft rotates.

Are the nut and spring still in the bottom of the engine bay somewhere? I can send you the spring, sleeve and nut if not but you will have to hang on for a few days. The spare one is u/s anyway and if I ever repair it I can easily swap the nut over from another one.

  2. Watched this when it was on - a brilliant and sobering programme. Have to admit that i hadnt realised an ATO's job was primarily, well, to inspect stored ammunition...quite a leap from that to deciding which wire to cut!

  3. I think that Marcus is selling plain 6TNs, which are conventional flooded lead-acids, as opposed to the 6TNMF (Hawker). They won't last as long as the Hawkers so may prove a false economy. All 6TN variants should be the same size, 286mm x 269mm x 230mm. There is a version without the breather manifold (as used by the US) but it isn't any lower as the overall height is dictated by the terminals.

The Marcus batteries whilst cheap dont seem to last very long. I googled a couple of places and found some branded commercial equivalents for about £170. These have lasted 2 years, never been charged and crank like billyo..

The civilian equivalent of the gel filled hawkers seem to be about £5-600 each!!

  4. I can imagine what it's like getting those batteries in and out!

Come winter I have a large pile of batteries to look after...

Price wise, I'm well pleased with what I paid and what I have. I was looking at Sabre's but personally I think the original Scorpion is a more interesting vehicle (historically) plus the turret has a tiny bit more room!

Having said that it makes the BRDM feel like a limo inside!

Looking inside, it's all cosmetic and a good cleanup will do wonders. Having seen what some brave souls take on as restoration projects, this one is nearly mint...:D

How odd? When I changed the batteries on my Sabre Im sure they went through the top hatches, albeit with a lot of grunting and swearing....lowering them in with rope helps as you definitely cant get them through while stood in the hatch...and yes they were 6NT 120 amp so the same size as the Hawker ones...

  5. I wouldnt worry about the price mate, remember when you buy from Withams you have to add vat, and you're getting a completely unknown quantity. Looks nice and complete inside. If you spend a couple of days in there cleaning up you will be surprised what can be achieved..

Enjoy....just dont ask me to help you change the batteries..!

  6. I am reasonably sure this is the vehicle that came from Withams via their auction site 3 or 4 years ago...

I think there was a post about it at the time I will try to find it. As to where it was prior to that who knows!?

Found the post but dont know how to link to it. It was in November 2009 if you search withams scorpion you will find it...

  7. I do have some new seals fitted which I had made to try and overcome the problem of the leeking. At the end of November when Saladin went into hibenation, they were not leeking. It will be April before she gets her first run of the year though, so I am unable to say how sucsesfull they are. What I have found is, that once they start to weep they don't stop.

I would be interested to know if you have seen any improvement from your new seals..?

  8. Looks like excavators a definately out!

The category of vehicle you describe is that of a category H (vehicles steered by their tracks). This category does not include vehicles designed, constructed and used for excavation work, which are normally allowed to be driven to and from the place of operation by category B licence holders.

Why bother with a mini-digger even if it did qualify, especially as you have a Scorpion..!

I did mine off my own back partly to save money but also coz I have my own vehicles and spend a lot of time seeking and taking advice from people more knowledgeable than myself. Don't understand why people would want to short cut the learning process...at the end of the day it's a big responsibility esp on road. It is one thing hacking round a field where it doesn't matter if you get it wrong by 6 foot - do that on the road and you will be in big trouble..! OK lecture over..!

  9. They tried me in the Scorpion - took me half on hour to get out.. So I did it in the Sultan! :D

I have the opposite problem, Spartan is still easier to get in and out of but I can hardly see out with scopes and smokes in place! Find the Sabre has much better visibility and would imagine much easier on road (not been on road in Spartan as yet)...

  10. Terry Brooks usually gets very good recommendations but not sure where he is although it is 'down south' somewhere (as is anywhere south of sheffield!)...

Alternatively get the dvla booklet on specialist driving tests, read it cover to cover several times and get out and practice...total cost £62.50 plus petrol of course..!

There have been a number of threads on h tests if you search for it.

  11. Have looked at this again but still can't get it working from ipad..have looked at tapatalk but its £1.99 and sorry but i dont pay for apps, been burnt too many times before!

Guy - if you dont have access to a pc send me a pm and ill send you my email so i can post for you..

    Cheers
