  1. managed a bit more work on the ol gal, got the wings off, airfilter and steering wheel

     

    dug out the spare engine, can anyone tell me if this is 214 Cubic inch 28hp or is it the later 300Cui? it was prserved in 1977, the only difference i can see is the oil filter and inlet manifold. I have never worked on these bedford engines so really dont know much about them.

    Currently sat in a Ford ET6, that the owner parked in the woods with a cool 1200 miles on the clock, he bought the truck for £17 just for the rear body.

  3. I am starting the restoration of my second Jeep which I rather fancy restoring as an RAF example as the other is US khaki. My father used to drive them in Burma in WW11. So my questions are, does anyone have any photos of the sort of specification, colour, markings etc and would they have been originally khaki and then resprayed in blue? So to restore with all parts including chassis and axles in blue may not be correct. Anyway any thoughts of knowledge woudl be appreciated. thx Andrew

  4. My Dad was in India/Ceylon/Burma until 1946 as a Signaller in the Royal Signals. Only thing he drove there was an Elephant. As for Japs, the only ones he saw were some POWs, who were Koreans, and about 6 foot tall! After the war he joined a Concert Party, and said that 'It ain't arf hot Mum' was very realistic.

     

     

    Now that is intresting, my grandad travelled to Burma via Mumbai and Calcutta then drove down to Rangoon bringing up the rear so to speak. He then spent most of 46 driving concert parties around Burma! the truck in the picture with the spitfire was his for a while, i think its a chevrolet?

    He spent a lot of his time driving dodge WC51's, nickmaned "coffin carriers!" as thats what they carried most of the time and two fitted in the back just right apparently. He also drove a lot of DUKWS around the water ways of Rangoon, unfortunaetly no pictures have turned up of these yet.

    He then went to Ceylon before returning to the UK.

     

  5. Dug out some of my grandads pictures from his time in Burma 1944-47 serving with the RASC as part of the 12th Army (even more forgotten than the 14th Army!)

    Picture were mostly taken in Rangoon, intresting array of vehicles and japanese officers surrendering in Rangoon.

     

    These pictures inspired the markings on my Jeep :-D

  6. Bit of a long shot, looking to find out some info on where my Jeep was rebuilt back in the 60's

     

    The rebuilt plate has the following info

     

    FM Tarbuck Co

    Zweigniederlassung, Jnnbruck

     

    15.2.1967

     

    I guessing this is in Germany (not sure though!), but have not been able to find an exact match on the words, anybody got any ideas? anybody else got a similar rebuild plate?

  7. Rebuild it, usually the best option, at least you knows it been done properly (especially if you do it yourself)

    I have seen so called recon engines with odd size bores :schocked:, timing out and even rattley bearing!!

    a Hotchkiss engine we recently used has suffered low oil pressure since fitting, it was supposadley brand new! next on the list to fix!!!

     

    i rebuilt my own jeep engine 6 years ago and have covered 12,000 trouble free miles since :-D, i even run it on straight unleaded and have not suffered any valve issues :-)

     

    Be careful of Ford blocks, i had one apart a while ago that had been completely rebuilt, had even welded all the external cracks, unfortunately they did not spot the internal crack, it lasted a couple of miles!!!!

  8. "Cons - The spares are expensive." - which parts? all the parts i have ever had to buy seem to be good value for money. what other vehicle can you buy a full exhaust for £50? and a brake master cylinder for £20?

     

     

    Pros - great fun to drive, extremely reliable, fit in normal garage, out run all series land rovers!, very adaptable depending on taste.

     

    Cons - watch out for tons of filler and hidden rust!, Hotchkiss dressed and sold as WW2! (although hotchkiss is a far better Jeep!)
