The split pins were through each end of the pin not the lugs. Not a split clamp but replacement engine had to free off the clamps which were seized on the pins
-
Looks the same as a champ one where there sould be split pins either end to hold the pin in as it should be free in the lugs Mine was a ******* to get out lot of heat & big hammer didnt break the lugs but they got bent soon straightened

Have you the means to carry out a compression loss test (also called a cylinder leakage test)? It'll give you the ability to find out % of loss and where the loss is going. They are pretty expensive items to buy but they do tell you what the issue is without taking the engine apart.
General idea is to bring piston up to TDC on firing stroke, attach the tester and it will pump a constant rate of compressed air into the cylinder. By listening to the exhaust, inlet, and crank case breather you can tell what isn't sealing.
I was introduced to this tool whilst working on a RR Meteor and it enabled us to make a full diagnosis of the cylinders in less that 2 hours. It also showed where the compression tester had been giving false readings due to the inlet track being blocked.
Would have thought that any good garage would have one....
I made mine from an old spark plug and a bit of tube to connect an air line

I would agree with Richard. I've got a 4.2 jaguar engine (6 cyl) on one and had to put a prop under the front for peace of mind.
theres a lot of weight hanging on 4 3/8 studs its also not easy to turn it over safely

Welcome Steve we need more Champ owners on here

Going to brooklands the other weekend she decided not to run on four cylinders. Changed plugs & points there then. found the miss fire was on number 2.Head off not valves or head gasket but the piston rings decided that they would like to see the light of day and exit through the piston top  Engine out tomorrow

It was a good day & sunshine. The only dampener on the day is the champs lost a cylinder (very careless)
