  1. Can anyone tell me the correct oil to use in the BMP/OT90 transmission. I need to do a drain and fill. thanks, Perry
  2. Richard/Adrian, Thanks for the clarification and tip. It's always good to hear from experienced users. Perry
  3. Hi Alan, Lubrication chart shows 50 H.D. in both the engines and transmission/controlled differential for the A2, and happens to be the same for the Sexton with the R975. Most people I have talked with regarding 2 stroke Detroit's have recommended straight 40 weight in the engine worked best. Shell Rotella T 15W-40 is what the Canadian military has been using for decades in the Detroits. I would guess that 50 weight gear oil would be best in the trans/differential as opposed to 50 weight engine oil. Adrian, want to chime in here? Perry
  4. I'll have to agree with Neil. My BMP-1 is a hoot to drive. I drove 113's in Canada, and the BMP will run circles around them! Maintenance is straight forward. Who is the fellow in France with Sherman's for sale??? Perry
  5. The name Montreal Locomotive Works Ltd. is indeed the official name on the data plate. The point I was making is that from the outset, the complex at Montreal, run by Canadaian Pacific Railways, had always been called "Angus Shops", and was a large employer of Montrealer's. Ask someone from Montreal where the Montreal Locomotive Works were and you would get a puzzled look. I have edited my previous post to clarify. Like Adrian says, most large components for the Grizzly came from the US (hull castings, engines, transmissions, controlled differentials) while fabricated parts and assembly being done in Montreal. Perry
  6. Canadaian Pacific Railways, Angus Shops (not so commonly called Montreal Locomotive Works) produced 1,420 Valentines, 1,949 Ram's, 188 M4A1 Grizzlies, (+3 additional hulls for Skink), 2150 Sextons from 1941 to 1945. The Angus Shops were tore down about 8-10 years ago after sitting empty for some time. Perry
  7. Thanks for the info gents. I had heard that a twin 6-71 had been fitted, but doubted it could be shoe horned into an engine compartment built for a radial, there is about a 2 foot difference in length, and then you need to sqeeze in the radiator. Any photo's of the engine compartment, it would be a work of art, and all that torque! Perry
  8. I have seen the video of Mr. Stamans(?) Sherman testing out the new track. Does anyone know what engine setup is in that machine. Does not sound radial to me. Perry
  9. I removed the skirts for transport home, and have left them off for now. Some of the off roading I am doing takes me through some tight confines in the woods, so best left in the shop. It does make cleaning easier. Perry
  10. After 16 months, I finally have the BMP home. I am looking forward to hours of familiarization, and fun. Perry
  11. Is there a way of determining a vehicles date of manufacture from the vehicle serial number. For example, a BMP's serial number ZWJ 107 KND. Perry
  12. One problem the U.S. had was that the armoured corp was being denied tanks with larger main guns and heavier armour because at the time, doctrine was anti-tank combat was the job of the artillery branch. The armoured corp was to exploit breakthroughs and support the infantry. This did not change till later in the war when it became very apparent that tank on tank combat was very common and necessary.
  13. If the Centurion clutch assembly is anywhere near the weight of the flywheel/clutch on the Continental R975 motors, a precision balance will go a long way. I am amazed that during the rebuild of my 975 C4 that most people I talk to are very concerned about balancing the 18oz. supercharger impeller, but no one seems concerened about the 175lb flywheel/clutch/fan assembly hanging off the end of the crankshaft! Hope you get up and running soon. It is horrible to see what can happen to the machines we care for. Perry
  14. Thank you gentlemen. Those are the dimensions I was after. Perry
  15. I am looking for BMP-1/OT-90 track dimensions. I need the track width and a measurement from outside to outside of the tracks. Any help is appreciated. thanks
  16. Hello gentlemen. Signed on to this forum a couple of months ago. Great sight! Spent a number of years driving armour as a reservist here in Canada back in my younger years. Have restored a MK II* Universal Carrier, am now working on finishing the R975 C4 out of my Sexton II that I started restoring 7 years ago (thats all that is left to do) and am looking to bring home a BMP. Thanks for the welcome. Perry Kitson
