  1. Not much difference -different gun StuK40 as used in StuG 3 which had a muzzle brake -they may be differences in the fitting of the Saukopf blende to fit the different weapon -but there were at least 3 different castings in wartime Hetzers. The Swiss contract is similar to the late model but has a slght chin -but again could be a variation of late war castings -after all Shermans had loads of different configurations so casting variations are often down to local manfacture- and Hetzers were built at both CKD and Skoda.

The roof is slightly different as the commander moved over to the left hand hatch position and that required an improved observation kit so a small domed topped cylinder shaped hood protecting the periscope replaced the remote MG -a pintle mounted MG was positioned to the rear of the hatch.

New aerial mounts for Swiss radios- in similar position to those on wehrmacht vechicles.

Hetzer had German Notek and Wehrmatch distance lights -as did Czech vehicles -Swiss vehicles had Swiss lighting system probably in keeping with their local regs.

The Suspension was mostly the same although the 4 hole idlers doesn't seem to be a wartime fitting although again Hetzers had a number of idler types 6hole 12hole etc.

As spare wheel was often mounted on the right superstructure side.

Power unit can be either original petrol CKD unit or Saurer Aubon diesel -86 were re-engined in 1952 to release motors spares for the other 72 -but most survivors seem to be diesels -possibly like many small armies the petrol ones were written off/scrapped first.

Thanks for the reply! I think I have read somewhere that G13's also have a floor escape hatch?

I too find the owner is free to restore it as he sees fit without further comments, it will be nice to see it running again regardless of the livery it will sport!

I had a few rides in the Crompton Collection's original Hetzer last year; great fun if you can stick your head out the hatch but very noisy and uncomfortable inside! :D

  3. Unfortunately, since being recovered a lot of parts reportedly have been removed to be 'restored' and seem to have vanished. The vehicle itself has been stored outside and has since deteriorated quite a bit. It really is a shame, it was a time capsule and should have been left as found in a proper storage area.

The will is there, but the knowledge and funding can't keep up it seems... :embarrassed:

That said, I am sure a lot of treasures are waiting to be discovered.

  4. Mark,

It is a helmet worn by the Royal Netherlands Military Police called "Marechaussee". Hence the crown and the "M". I guess it dates back to the 1960s.

That is correct, and the blue line around indicates how deep they should be pushed under water. :-D

  6. Hi,

Though i must admitt the cafe on the industrial estate down the road from beltring make a veryhearty breakfast very reasonably priced indeed and opens at 6 am so you can walk it off (more like waddle) back to camp.

Is that the one located in that side street across the Branbridges Road petrol station (near the roundabout)?

  7. Hi all,

the 'Militracks' German Vehicle Show will be held again on May 14 & 15, 2011 at the Liberty Park Museum in Overloon, The Netherlands (about 40 km under Nijmegen). This event will feature a selection of original WW2 German vehicles in restored, fully operational condition that will drive around the off-road course that is specially set out in the museum park. The course during the past edition was about 1.5 km long, but it will be lenghtened for the 2011 event. There are already talks to get some extremely rare vehicles to the show.

Everything is still in the planning stages, so there is no fixed program at the moment. Visitors will again get the opportunity to purchase a ticket for a ride around the course in a vehicle of their choice (if available) though. Last event all participating vehicles did that, and it was great fun for public and owners alike!

Participation is on invitation only, but all visitors are welcome of course! They already have a good selection of Type 166's, 82's, motorcycles and Kettenkrads, but if you have a special vehicle that you think would be something for this show drop me a line and I'll see if something can be arranged. I'm not in the organization but I do know them. The museum offers good facilities for participating vehicles.

For an impression of the past event just do a search on 'militracks' on youtube, or look here: http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?18674-Militracks-Overloon&highlight=militracks

I will post updates when they become available, at this moment it is still 7 months away...:-D

  8. Unexpected: another LHD 109 Series III (1977) with closed hardtop is offered for sale now less than 5 miles from where my father works, so he will have a look today on the way home, with the checklist in hand. The seller states it has rust on the outriggers, a leaking wheel brake cilinder, rusted brake line, and some other small things. The MOT just expired 10 days ago and that makes me a bit suspicious, with the timing of it being offered for sale. Price is less than half of the other 109. I don't mind some work, but I don't need a restoration project.

For some pics see http://www.autoscout24.nl/Details.aspx?id=bso4ee231qqr (no, that is not the actual price).

I think it also is ex-military. I'll hear more about it tonight I think.

LHD Series III's aren't really rare here, but you don't find them on any streetcorner either. If I would be sensible I would forget about a landi anyway and go for something Japanese... :nut:

    Greetz :-D
