  1. I believe I have talked my wife, daughter and son-in-law in going to both Eden Camp and Pickering on Saturday. We leave for home on Sunday, so Saturday is the only option. It sounds like a good event and I'm looking forward to it. I've been to several military museums in the South of England in past years, but nothing in the North. Thanks for the information.
  2. I'm visiting in Harrogate, North Yorkshire for the next few days. Are there any military museums near Harrogate?
  3. Welcome to the forum. You have a fantastic project for this winter! I have always wanted a DUKW. What condition is the hull in? Post more pictures.
  4. My paperwork finally cleared and I was able to pick up my M149A2 trailer (Water Buffalo) from Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base in North Carolina. The pickup went without a hitch, except for the long 1023 mile round trip, some of which was caused by a very long detour. I arrived on site at about 0700 and one of the guys let me in early to hitch up my Ford F150 to the trailer. I was on the road home before my actual appointment time. I am extremely happy with the water buffalo. It is in virtually perfect conditon. I was under the impression it was a 1990 model, but was surprised to learn that it was manufactured in November 2000. All I need to do to make it perfect is replace the silicone rubber seal on the cover, straighten one valve handle, and reseal one pipe joint, which is currently wrapped in duct tape. Tires are virtually new, with rubber plugs still visible. I'm not sure whether I will keep it or sell it. I've already been offered twice the auction price I paid. I had to take it easy on the way home because of the almost 3,000 Lbs weight of the trailer and no trailer brakes hooked up. No problems, however. I will be pulling it in a parade with my M35A2 truck next Saturday.
  5. Good to hear that your leg is now healed and that your MUTT is now back on the road. I've always wanted one - I'm jealous.
  6. I don't know what the UK penalties are for using red diesel, but a friend of mine was arrested and received a fine of $3000.00 USD in Alabama for using untaxed diesel fuel.
  7. The M149A2 trailers go for more than conventional trailers. They are much more rare. This one cost me $940.00 USD, but prices are very dependent on condition of the equipment and the location. I've seen some fantastic looking vehicles and trailers that were just too far away. The furthest I've traveled to bring something home was an M105A2 trailer I pulled for 923 miles home, but the entire trip was ~1850 miles. Normally, this is not something I would do, but the trailer was in like-new condition with new top and new tires, although it was a 1968 model.
  8. I just won at auction a 1990 M149A2 tank trailer(Water Buffalo) manufactured by Elliott Machine Works. It is equipped with a 1514 L stainless steel potable water tank and carries NATO 3-color camo paint. It appears to be in excellent condition, but I have not yet pulled it home. It also has good tires on it. It will take a few weeks to get the paperwork together so that I can pick it up. It is currently located at Camp Lejeune, a U.S. Marine Corps. base. I intend to pull it with my M35A2 truck. I'll use it for watering on my property and for military vehicle rallies and parades.
  9. I was lucky in that I reached someone that was willing to help, and was in fact very interested that I had purchased a vehicle from his unit. It was also only about 11 months since my vehicle was on active duty with the Army, so not a lot of time had passed. I don't know how far you are located from 51 Squadron, RAF Regiment, but if it isn't far you can likely find some men in the local pub from the unit that might advise you on who to talk to.
  10. Welcome to the forum! NVs are addictive - you can't stay away.
  11. I contacted the U.S. Army 103rd Engineer Battalion a few days ago about my M35A2, a 1969 Kauser Jeep w/winch. I was switched between several people until I finally got hold of a Major Chuck Kim on the phone. He was initially suspicious when I started asking questions, but I finally convinced him I didn't have any nefarious intent. He was very helpful with the numbers on the truck. He also forwarded me a write-up of the history of the unit the truck had been assigned to. He was familiar with my specific truck and was fascinated that I had bought it. We had a fairly lengthy conversation about M35A2s and my time in the Army driving them in the early 70s in Germany. Between what I found on the internet on my own and numbers I unearthed on the bumpers, there were discrepancies. Everything is now clear, at least as far as the most recent numbers on the bumper go. Who knows what I'll find when I did deeper into the multiple layers of paint. The problem was that the truck had been transferred from the 28th Infantry Division to the 213th ASG, when the 103rd Engineer Battalion was transferred, which was missing from everything I found on the internet.
  12. I'm not that familiar with the MB. However, is it possible that you have a broken distributor shaft? I had a vehicle several years ago that had a broken distributor shaft. The engine obviously would not run, but when the engine was rotated, the distributor still turned as the two halves of the distributor shaft would 'catch' on each other. Like your situation, the timing was off. I pulled the distributor after several days of desperation, and found the problem. I had a difficult job pulling the lower half of the shaft. Good luck!
  13. I'd keep it the way the Canadians had it, complete with military markings and turret. Perhaps you can borrow an original fuel tank from someone and have a fabricator make a duplicate.
  14. Sounds like you are my neighbor! I'm a member of Steel Soldiers. I attended the 2009 GA rally and I intend to attend the 2010 rally as well, assuming that work doesn't interfere. I'll be bringing my M35A2 to the rally and pulling either my M116A2 trailer with an MEP-003A generator or my M105A2 trailer - not sure yet. I was only able to spend one night last year, slept in the back of my truck on an army cot. I'll try to stay at least 3 days this year. If you are ever up in the Hiawassee area (NE Georgia mountains), give me a shout.
  15. I got some ambition today and decided to install my new Monroe 34787 shocks. They were bright yellow, so I repainted them with Gillespie 24087 semi-gloss OD. I decided to go with the Monroes instead of NOS shocks due to the likely old age of NOS shocks. Aside from painting, it took about one hour to change them out. Very easy job. The Monroe's were a direct replacement for the originals, except the rubber bushings were thicker. The shocks I took out were dated 1968. Since my truck is a 1969 model, it is likely these were the originals. They were thoroughly worn out. Since I was already dirty, I decided to continue. I went on to check all fluids and greased all grease fittings. This was followed by adjusting the parking brake, long overdue. Adjusting the parking brake was very easy, although I had several people tell me it was a difficult task. It took me about 5 minutes, although it was a very dirty job. The parking brake works well now. In checking the air pressure in the tires last week I found that the inside rear tire on the back left was flat. I replaced the tube. I paid someone to do it for me - $25.00 USD for everything, including removing and mounting the wheel.
  16. I try not to fly and shoot at the same time! Where in Canada are you located? I have traveled extensively throughout Canada for many years, as part of my job is to visit pulp and paper mills. You live in a beautiful country.
  17. Is the requirement for an explosive license the same if you use a black powder substitute, such as pyrodex, et al?
  18. I don't think it is the rad cap causing the problem, but I agree that it should be replaced due to the age. It looks to be very old, perhaps even the original. I have one on order. Thanks.
  19. I pulled the sending unit and put it in boiling waterwhile hooked up to the truck. It read correctly. After re-installation, it again reads minimal temp while driving and fully warmed up. I'm now suspecting a faulty thermostat that is stuck open. I think I will go ahead and replace the thermostat. This vehicle is over 40 years old and I don't know how old the installed thermostat is. I purchased the truck from the U.S. Army last summer and this is the first time I've had any cooling system issues. Actually, the only problem I've had with the truck is that I lost 5th gear in the transmission after driving somewhere around 1000 miles. I swapped it out with another used transmission. I replaced the clutch and pressure plate at the same time since the transmission was out, but it really didn't need a new clutch.
  20. I love my Parker Hale,.58 cal. It's extremely accurate. However, the 2 band like yours is supposed to be the most accurate. Apparently the barrel heats up and the three band musket stock doesn't allow the barrel to float as much. Do you still have yours? I have never been involved with reenactment, I simply compete in matches. I don't have my M2 yet, only the M66 gun ring. I plan on acquiring an active M2 in the next few months, but the cost is fairly high and I'm looking for a good deal.
  21. Welcome to the site. I'm new myself and very much enjoy the posts. The people here seem to be very friendly and knowledgeable about MVs
  22. I decided to take my M35A2 Kaiser Jeep for a ride a little while ago. Deuces seem to run better when exercised. I noticed that the engine temp gauge was reading a little low after about 10 miles, and by the time I got back it was reading at the minimum temp. At first I suspected low coolant level and the resultant temp sensor not being in the coolant. However, the engine (Hercules multi-fuel) was not overheating. I have not checked the coolant level yet, as the engine is still too hot to remove the radiator cap. Now I know what I'll be working on tomorrow.
  23. No country is perfect, but there are a lot worse places than the UK. I find the people to be some of the friendliest anywhere, and I travel substantially.
  24. I'm not very good at skeet. I like to target shoot. I travel quite a bit in my job and I try to take some guns with me if there is a local match. I've never competed in the UK, but I have in Finland and Germany in the past. I compete in the following areas, but pistol competition is my favorite. Bullseye pistol - I mostly shoot an M1911A1 .45 automatic Highpower rifle - Springfield Armory M1A1, M1 Garand, AR15A1 HB Muzzleloading pistol - Various custom pistols, Original 1858 Remington Muzzleloading rifle - Various custom rifles Musket - Parker Hale 3-band musket, Springfield 1863
  25. This is an obsolete special tube manufactured by Tesla, a Czech company. You can see the specifications by going to http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=cs&u=http://katalogelektronek1960.mysteria.cz/udspecel.html&ei=2knMS7y7IcH7lwfqycGqCg&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CBEQ7gEwAQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3DTesla%2B11TN40%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive%26sa%3DG . There many electronic components that contain very small amounts of radioactive materials of different isotopes. Please note that it is contrary to law to dispose of these by discarding. You should notify the UK Dept of Health for proper disposal http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publichealth/Healthprotection/Ionisingradiation/index.htm .
