  1. I have heard many tales on some being rubbish and other suggestions being down right dangerous etc.

Has anyone had good results with a particular product or mix that doesn't cost the earth or destroy the holding tank / pump etc?

I have soaked parts in the past in a 50/50 mix of paraffin and diesel in a bucket, which did unseize them too. Is this a safe product to use for a parts washer instead of a solvent based one?

Any experiences shared and appreciated etc.

    Thanks All :)

  2. A General question to the series 2/ 2a owners out there that have either an FFR or GS with Dexion fitted.

The correct fitting in a Rover Mk8 was that the uprights for the Dexion support also had the first roof hoop as an integral part.

I wondered if any owners had this original item still in place.

It is my opinion that as and when a need for the canvas roofs to be removed in service was needed that an alternative was used. Namely the upright bracket that became common in the series 3 FFR's.

I was curious if my interpretation was accurate or there was another base modification reasoning!

All the literature shows the correct Dexion support / hoop, but I have never seen one in the flesh or possibly on our threads.

They seem to be the Holy Grail on a Toastie Rover 8 or 9??

Cheers and a Happy New Year

  3. Would it not be sensible to have the correct but empty extinguisher and bracket in the vehicle.

With a modern gauged extinguisher that is CE marked and to a current standard as a loose item with the parts and tools you carry etc.

I think from a safety perspective I would not use either an old Pyrene BCF type extinguisher full stop as they contain asbestos!

Just my four peneth as this is my approach only but seems the safest (To Me ;))

  4. It's pretty common knowledge (amongst FAC holders) that even FEO's knowledge of the myriad firearms acts is occasionally "somewhat patchy" and they rarely admit "I don't know". It's also not unheard of for licensing departments to "make it up as we go" (see Durham Const. and medical letters).

I presume that for "fire arms officer" you mean ARV crew/AFO type- I can't imagine he has an intimate understanding of the firearms acts and their subtleties (not a dig, but he has no real need to, anymore than a beat copper does). I also imagine (from what I've seen of ex-police firearms crew) that he's also not one to admit "I don't know".

I believe the MOD "I have no live rounds or empty cases [...] in my possession, Sir!" is more about people stealing MOD property (aside from live rounds, obviously).

You can walk into any gunshop in the land and buy a tub of blanks (usually .22 or 8mm, but that's semantics) without any paperwork, other than ID if you're fortunate enough to look anywhere near 18.

My kitchen knives can still seriously injure someone at close range (unlike (new?) blank firers that have to be top venting). It doesn't mean I'll be surrendering them any time soon.

    Thank you for clarity.

Every day is a School Day :)

  5. No debate required because in the UK it's not against the law for civilians to possess blank rounds (of less than 1" in diameter) or magazines, no firearms certificate required.

    Firearms Act 1968

Are you sure as my mates a fire arms officer with the Met and he tells me otherwise. Blank can still seriously injur someone at close quarters.

if I've got this wrong then I've been I'll advised by police and MoD.

  6. Gents

it is both a military and civil offence to have upon ones person live or blank ammunition or parts there of on their possession.

If you later find any live rounds, blank rounds, empty cases or pyrotechnics on your person you must hand them in.

THIS APPLIES TO SOLDIERS AND THE CIVILIAN WORLD.

for those of you that haven't followed this you are breaking the law.

Please surrender to the nearest police station or TA centre with evidence of where you found it.

If it's not on your FAC as ammunition you will be arrested and charged.

Its not for debate and my duty to inform you to deal with anything on yourselves swiftly.

Don't ignore this! You've gone public on a Forum!

    Thank you.

  7. Wayne,

    There is no problem getting brake hoses made with Imperial type fittings, a number of companies producing them. One I have used in the past is this one;

    http://www.nelsonstokes.com/products/brake-hoses.ashx

They may even have the spec. for the particular Lockheed number otherwise send them an old one as pattern. Brakes are essential and should not be compromised by a cost issue. Better to spend it on roadworthy items than radios or arms, etc.! ;)

    cheers Richard

Totally agree Richard about brakes, especially something this hefty . Great contact and I will look into it for sure.

Spot on Richard, this was actually the company that made new hoses for Pigs in N.I. :D

I remembered the location but couldn't find where I had written the name. In fact Dale cleaned them out of their remaining stock :-(

But they would certainly be your best bet.

Thanks Clive. They should be a great place to start and produce the goods to the highest standards.

I'll know more as I start taking the brake system into strip down and evaluation.

    Cheers both :-D

  8. Yes mine's been getting shorter over the years, but 2 ft is a lot to lose :red:

I have seen flexible used but it doesn't look very nice.

Perhaps get some thick stout wire/cable so that you can simulate the shape & distance of the required pipe. Measure the ID of silencer outlet then with callipers look for pipe that has that OD. Try looking through Rover bits first & maybe when you get any visitors ask to look at their tail pipes & see if there are any that might be cut down. So you can go to an exhaust place armed with a make, model & year.

    Then tell us all please.

    now there is a challenge :-( !

  9. When I required new brake hoses for my MUNGA not finding a supply I went to my then local hydraulic hose supplier with an old hose of each type required. They produced new stainless braded ones to my pattern parts with correct fittings at around the cost of off the shelf items, job done.

Were your end fittings Metric as I think that's where the old British Vehicles might struggle wit all the old Imperial fittings out there.

Its always worth a go though!

Anything can be done, but cost can be an issue of course

  10. Whilst you have that Y piece off go round the edge of the circular mating surface with a round stone & get it really smooth. Also with a flat stone this time get the down pipe surface equally smooth. I smother the mating surfaces with copper grease that allows effective snuggling in & the residue I hope helps burn itself in enhancing the seal. I don't have great confidence it exhaust pastes.

I have found it best to loosen up the rest of the exhaust system & then tighten the Y piece to down pipe as priority & then tighten up down the system. Otherwise you maybe perpetuate an established misalignment or a replacement component that is very slightly different.

You have a hardly used down-pipe in the trailer. I know you have various take-off silencers from Dale. I may soon have a reasonable take-off from my Pig. It has a series of little holes along the base due rust from condensation. I'm not sure whether I will repair those but with the various jobs piling up I may have to fit my only remaining NOS silencer.

    Great advice.

Yes I have a NOS silencer and spare downpipe.

if you don't want if replaced the silencer I will take off your hands as an emergency item I can future repair. If that's agreeable? With downpipe in trailer I will have a spare system in the main.

Have you ever replaced the pipe to rear before? Was it genuine or alternative??

    cheers
