  1. Thanks for that...missed that one. It only shows their landline no. I would have thought they have left already......but will try later.

I like that show, small, but always seem to find something I dont need....

If I get any info I'll report back, not sure if any of the traders have internet connection there,so they could report. I remember we had really good intel from War and Peace last year....well until he was gagged......:-|

  2. Good morning, does anyone know if the the Malvern show (tomorrow) will go ahead,if not what is format for informing the masses.

I was thinking of going but with a 85 mile trip to get there ,I'm not sure I fancy finding its been called off once I arrive :nut:.

    Thanks

    Gary

Hi I have used this guy a couple of times.

Great guy, great service and good price.

Btw his name is John and is a member on here (Johnny Loot...I think)

    Hope it helps

  4. Totally agree about Rex,not only a fountain of knowledge but I ALWAYS found him very helpful when we were going through our Gmc rebuild.

On the other hand I have nearly always felt that prices are made up by some european dealers especially at shows....depending what your accent is :-(.

    Gary

  5. Aghhhhhhh... Sorry if this is the wrong place but I'm slightly aggrieved ....( cant type what i would like to for fear of being banned from the forum)...

Ok ...Lets start from the beginning .....

I was on the hunt for some bits for a MV restro ...UK sellers out of stock so contacted several European sellers and found one that had what i needed ...Price OK ish but postage was just "P" taking ...

Aha ..Stonleigh was just around the corner so a great opportunity to find the bits, and as i thought one of our European trades had just what i needed but he would have to post it to me ..great he quoted about 10 -12 euro per packet and about 8 euros postage ..so 2x12 + 8 = 28 to 32 Euros , anyway after some Email tennis the price is now 42Euros :-X..size and weight of packet being the issue ..

I bit the bullet and pay .... any way the packet ( a £1.30 jiffy bag from the post office ) turns up today with 3 euros

worth of stamps stuck on it ...:stop::???...

Do I feel that Im being Stiffed or what ...

Sorry ...Just had to have a Rant about the way some dealers use postage and packing as a way of grabbing more money from us ..

    ken

Yep it just makes you wonder who crossed the channel on June 6th 44 to liberate Europe....now they liberate US of OUR hard earned cash !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Yes, we noticed the abscence of Jack. Didnt feel quite right without him being there. So to make myself feel better i had to take the pee out of complete strangers instead.

Not quite so many people dressed up in uniform this year. At least one chap wandering around dressed like a member of the Taliban. He caught some funny looks.

To be honest I noticed the lack of people dressed up other than people who had an stand.

I have nothing against it but have often wondered why people do dress up in uniform to go shopping, I can understand when taking a vehicle to a show. As I said nothing against it ,maybe someone could explain the idea behind it so that next time I go to Tesco or John Lewis I wan't feel so silly........;)

  7. Hi Rick,

This road run had been listed here for a while..... www.mvtsem.com

Well organised and added fun with the snow,it would have been nice to see more military vehicles but I understand that there is some issue with location of vehicle storage.

I had an early start, despite the RVP being only 7 miles from me I did a 50 mile round trip to pick the GMC up and then a 50 mile round trip to put it to bed.

Saying that great fun good company and nice touch of a soup break half way round,so thanks to Roger who arranged it.

  8. Need some Kingpin Shims for my Banjo Axle 353 GNC Jimmy ...Bought some 0.030 from Rex but he doesn't have any smaller sizes .. Contacted some european dealer who have Shim packs but the Postage is Tantamount to DAYLIGHT ROBERY ..

IE it will cost more for postage than the shims cost to buy ...:-X

Anyone know of of a good European of US supplier who doesn't take the "P" when it comes to postage ...??

    ken

Sorry I cant help,we did the same job in the summer only on a split axle. Did you replace bearings.

But fully agree on cost of postage, I needed something for our Dodge and could only source it in Holland.....the part was only 16 euro but they have a minimum charge of 25 euro for postal order's. Then 25 euro carraige. We needed the part so they had us by the short and curley's . "Dick Turpin" comes to mind.

  9. To be fair when I first opened ours I thought " what the !!!!!!" but cup of tea in hand, careful reading, careful reading of colour codes as supplied by Rex and reverting to wiring diagram it was ok. (we also had to change things a little because ours has alternator)

If I remember we started by connecting the light swith on the dash first, then onto the connector in the engine bay just in front of driver.

Of course there are NO tails to connect rear or front lights so you will also need them. We also added a few (out of site) modern fuses.....maybe not 100% accurate but I would rather be safe than sorry.

At the time we did the work we also installed a "Motorcycle" style brake light switch on the brakes and have had no more "no shows" from said rear light.

So as I said before, its not a perfect replica and if you are doing a "from the factory" resto its probably not for you. However if you want to keep the Gmc up and running and feeling a little more confident of the wiring, they work.

BTW I have no connection with Rex Ward other than, finding him very helpful when I've asked questions.

    Good luck,

    Gary

  10. I also fitted one to our 353.

Ok its not straight forward and TBH i found that most but not all of the connections could have been about 2 inches longer.

No its not an exact copy of the orignal, but and its a big but I would rather have a new wiring loom like this than the old one.

If you sit down take your time, read the colour code's Rex supplies and cross ref with a wiring diagram its ok to do.

It took us 2 days but that included removing the old loom and making some alterations to suit our needs,eg we wired the brake lights to work on the ing switch rather that the main light switch ( saves forgetting to turn them on) we also replaced the rear lights back to original.

Not a perfect product but much better than nought. I passed on my comments to Rex to assist in future mods.

  11. Not a bad idea :-)

Ok why not put this up as a future event and see how it runs.....might be interesting to see how many people are interested.

TBH I'm staggered how many people come up to me when out with the GMC and say " I've got one of those" meaning the gmc but they never seem to take it out. True high mpg but I cant understand why people would chose to own one and never take it out. Ours is out every month .....at least.

    Gary

  12. I know its a slightly annoraky thing to do :nut:, but I've created a photo Blog to archive the CCKWs I've photographed. Link :) In doing so I've spotted that two different trucks have chosen to use the same serial number LOL.

Re the two trucks with the same number....how weird is that...and both of us at A&E this year.

Here is our reason....year of truck 1944.and 57-59 simple........our birth years. Would love to hear the other trucks reason.

PS ours is JB old "MANS TRUCK"

  13. thanks guys premium choice on the list will try KGM too...insurance is a scam in the UK...in Germany you insure a vehicle...then if anyone drives it it is insured...easy peasey, no rip off prices for young drivers, no stupid policies for the older people. As insurance was designed the sharing of the paments makes it cheaper for everyone...this is how it should be..

a community shares the costs...it is not about paying for what we use...

I'm not sure I would want to pay the same as if an 18 year old were driving. I'm not for one moment saying they are all cr*p drivers but the cost of their polices indicate's that..........

  14. Fantastic idea!! Full on man trucks!!

And wonderful to see my old Jimmy in there and that machine was a life changer. It is also good to see that Gary has left the jerry can holders on there - I made them out of my old shot gun cabinet  which in turn I made out of an old bail sledge from one of the farms I used to run. You wouldn't get away with making gun cabinets now from old farm machinery :-D

I will use this blog as some news today on War History Online to help drive traffic to your blog.

    Keep it up!

Jack, its only them jerry can holders that keeps the rest of the front together............

  15. Interestingly, the first CCKW 353 GMC featured is Jack Beckett's old Jimmy as featured in his restoration series of articles in CMV some years back entitled 'Virgin Soldiers.' I saw this truck at A & E this year and had a good chat to its owner. (Didn't mention the epic story of it losing its front wheels when being towed home from Operation Bolero in Suffolk in July 2007, but that may account for the 'flats' on the front brake drums...........!

CCKW 353 BSK 105 also featured in your blog is owned by Lawrence and Gill Goody of Chedburgh, Suffolk.

I have been collecting CCKW 353 photos now for quite some time and will one day get organised enough to do something with them. I'm looking forward to seeing future additions to your Photo Blog

Ahhhhh so your the one who spoke to us at A&E Clive....lol. Nice to have met you,was it your Mum and Dad who rode in rear ? TBH we had a number of "small problems" with the jimmy but to date none that have posed any major problem apart from.......the dreaded "Jimmy Shimmy" of which i hope we are now on top of. Found those flat spots on the brakes when we were replaceing the king Pin bearings.

  16. In about a month one of the largest antique shows on the east coast will be 30 minutes away.

I think it will be an excellent chance to pick up a couple brass fire extinguishers.

So the problem becomes: Whats the proper fire extinguisher for a G506 and G508 truck?

    Anyone have any ideas?

 I am shocked, with your knowledge I would have expected you to be able to tell us Brits......:-)
