  1. Ah, that was just my cousin robs ingenuity

Not taking anything away from "cousin Rob" but I've seen that in a wartime photo, I believe it was in southern England, build up to D Day ( I may be mistaken) ;)

Problem is I cant find it or remember when I saw it...DOH

Saying that it looked good we went for a closer look, with permission of course.

  2. I don't think that's the case here Gary.

HMVF does discuss incidents that happen at shows and on the roads. We heavily discuss what happens at the W&P show and using the helicopter incident for an example and then the crazies on quads etc etc and BB nuts and so on.

This was a national show and could have seriously damaged the whole hobby. Many folks spend a lot of time pushing this hobby and our history forward. If this hobby is to self regulate then this incident is a massive wake up call to all of us. As we all know, MV's have blind spots everywhere but tracked vehicles are blindspot central and as we all know tracks and armour are a whole world a part from soft skins - they need a whole different approach and mindset in their handling.

There are lessons as always to be gained from this BUT such a thing isn't rocket science but it is complacent.

Jack i totally agree with you sentiment.

Im just bumping up my post count..........;)

    ;)

  3. Heard of Libel?? You couldn't be further from the truth, the show is no threat to ours in location or date & I was invited down by Tim Hawkes who actually had some involvement in our show..

I'm not sure where the libel comes into this, I asked a question.

Heres another, if you new Neil was at any risk as you stated and he is a friend of yours did, YOU advise him against swimming the ot after all risk assessment starts well before the show starts, I'm sure Tim Hawkes was under the impression Niel was quite capable of operating the OT even in the water.

( after reading earlier posts i now understand Niel had never swam the ot.........yikes )

  4. I cant help feeling this is turning into a witch hunt, of coarse there are some people on here who must be perfect and live in an ivory tower.

Yes I agree this was an incedent that should not have happened, but as has already been said,it did and no one was hurt.....why dont we stop the mud slinging and be positive about the other 99% of the show that was great.

Or is there a hidden agenda to slag off one show against anothe,r after all you have told us a couple of times that you are a major show organiser.

    Accidents happen geat over it.

  5. I would hope the whole incident is being investigated by the MVT as that is a combination of errors that could have seriously cost lives. Lucky day for everyone involved and a lucky day for our hobby.

I'm sure it will be Jack, in the same way wheels falling of trucks was ;)

Anyway as you can see from that angle the marshalls jumped to it pretty quick....that situation HAS to go down to driver/crew.

  6. Those kids do look a bit close as that amphibian was getting into the drink.... One accident and it could ruin the way shows are held, or the uproar could even make a show an unviable proposition

I'm not sure that the kids were as close as it seems through the "Lens"

Of course Marmite is correct re general safety, but lets not forget that things happen even with the best planning.

How many people have had near misses at W&P with under age people screaming around on quads. Two years ago I was almost hit by a 432 that was belting around in the field I was camping in. When I reported it to a marshal the response I received was " if I did not like it I knew where the exit was" .

  7. Sorry but the Marshaling has got to be questioned..

To be honest the Marshaling was pretty good......the problem there was the general public doing their damdest to get as close as possible even when advised, asked and instructed to keep clear.

People were, even mobbing trying to get a closer look when the recovery truck was winching.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing as can be viewed on the thread about recovery. ALL of the Marshals did their best....sometimes things dont always workout as planned..........look at Concorde !!!!

Regarding the general public at shows, we have resisted up til now not to "rope" of our vehicles as i believe its nice to let people get up close. BUT this weekend has convinced us, ropping off needs to be done sometimes.

I had to asked 4 people to remove their "orrible" kids from out of our vehicles...

  8. This seems to be common practice within this hobby.

Most traders if not all will give you a price WITHOUT vat unless you ask. Its not a scam in most cases, it simply makes their products seem cheaper.

I'm not sure what % of sales are to trade and what are to the general public, it would be interesting to know.

Its easy these days to spend say £150, only to find when the bill arrives its accutally a lot more,of course vat is then normally added to postage too.

I'm not moaning, vat has to added by any business with a reasonable turn over BUT it would be nice to be made aware earlier.

Has anybody noticed any dealers who advertise on on Milweb state the prices are plus VAT

I'm VAT registered within my field but i make sure from the start my customers understand this.

BTW I cant claim my vat back on MV parts GRRRRRRRRR :cry::cry::cry:

  9. That's interesting. Ours is facing down and eveyrtime we remove the weapon we hit the dash panel lamps.

I would have thought it would have been easier to fit and remove weapon if the holder was "upside down" as such.

Is it to do with visabilty do you think.

  10. I'd like to add another *must have* item

If your truck is still 6V (like all proper CCKWs should be :) ) you'll need a 6V to 12V dc-dc converter to power gadgets like phones, GPS and recharge LED torches.

They are small and very easy to wire up.

Or a 5V solar charger with the proper hookups.

Deadline, I love your purity of the CCKW, I just dont think they would have had an facility for cellphones or GPS.....

    :laugh::laugh:

    :laugh::laugh:

  11. A Dodge 6x6 ? I can see your reasoning but were they not under-powered for the size ? (I truly do not know as I have only read a couple of bits about the 6x6) Obviously a 6x6 has more room so would be better in that respect.

The other thing I should mention is that I have no intention of trying to live and survive like a G.I.

The US troops and the Brits, Canadians etc had a tough time of it and all I am looking to do is go to some of the places they went.

I know some think it 'all part of the fun' but all we are doing is going on the trip to pay our respects to them, not to try and replicate the hell a lot of them went through.

With that in mind, as I said, we will stay in hotels and accommodation in the evenings and we will also be putting in some better seating/cushions in what ever vehicle we choose but wont be cutting the vehicles about, just making sure people are comfortable(ish...) and safe (as mentioned, better lighting etc)

Now, as far as MPG goes for a GMC 353, WC 4x4 and a WC 6x6, what would would average at a sensible speed ?

    More curious than important really.

We have both, Gmc 353 and Wc51. I can get 8/ish from the gmc my hoppo only gets 5 when he drives, insists its the size 18 feet......lol. The dodge gives me 12/13,both at a steady 35 ish. TBH nethier are going to be Ubba comfortable in the back we had full size canvas pad (seats and backs) made by Allied forces these help......a little . Be careful if you try to do too many mods regards seating the Insurance police might not be happy.

Understand what you say about accomadation and a good idea. It always makes me smile when people say " we live like they lived" yeah right. just without the blood guts and sh*t

    Good luck

  12. Buying a decent one I dont think will a problem these days but running it, well thats a different story with the cost of fuel as it is. Remember also petrol is dearer in France than here (just).

Of course split 5 ways it make it much less painful :cheesy:

Im sure there are far more people on here can to point you in the right direction....but good luck and enjoy it. Thats just the sort of thing more of us should be doing tbh sitting in fields slapping each other on the back because you have used the correct nut and bolts leaves me cold. Three or four vehicles trunderling along the open roads and lanes is MUCH more fun.

  13. Sorry, I meant using some sickoflex type stuff instead of a rubber seal. I have used it I'm my boat and its very neat if you do it carefully.

however I do appreciate you might want to use rubber to be more authentic.

    it was just a thought.

Im not sure that you could shape the sickoflex to anywhere the correct profile.:wow: Its not just a case of being authentic its more a case of being correct. (and I'm not counting rivets ;))

    Vulture,

I am informed that the dodge wc series seals are the same size asthe Gmc,however good luck with getting one of those. I tried for ages ,Dallas never seemed to have any, although they were always due in. Jeep parts not any use either. in the end i got one at Stoneliegh in Jan from a Dutch trader.

As I said before try Cliff Harris thats where i got ours from.

  14. Why is it a pain? it takes a couple of seconds to change your password & you can change it back again at any time if you wish..

I suppose in the same way it used to be a pain for Jack to petrol in "a mans truck" or make sure the wheel nuts were tight.......:D

There always seems something better to doin life............dont you think ?;)

  15. It's been a nightmare. We've never ALL been this ill at the same time. I was in hospital yesterday for a check prior to getting a wisdom tooth out. In the usual medical pre-amble check, they found my blood pressure was dangerously high, despite being on the max dose of blood pressure meds for the last year, so I've got another appointment early next week for more blood tests. It's down a bit today, but it should be much lower considering the meds I'm on! I'm wondering if it's the cocktail of other meds that's pushing it up.

Anyway, I'll get back to the rebuild soon, and hopefully this Sunday will be out in 'Jessie' for the Yorkshire MVT crank up to York Castle. I'd rather be coughing my guts up out having fun than sitting around the house!

Yep and spreading the dreaded virus to all :cry:

  16. Well in my humble opinion, Id take the screen out.

Trying to work over the bonnet is going to one big Bar stool..

I cant agree with Gas44 re the fitting being that easy ..( sorry) All my rubbers have been MV spares, regarded in the jeep world as a top quality products ..the Jimmy/Dodge and Jeep inner windscreen are identical Extrusions..

the Frame will need to be spotless within the grove ..Lubrication is king ...

Just a thought, hows the rest of your inner frame ??? new fully glazed and rubberd frames are only ...Sorry i say only ...£245...these are for Dodges so are about 1/4 of an inch shorter..

My frame looked oki'sh until i removed it and it well "Fell apart":-X

If you re-read my post you will see that I stated we found fitting the Gmc seal "easier" than the Jeep, not that it was easy to do.

For what its worth....I would agree with you........removal is the way to go.

  17. Gas44

Thanks for your very comprehensive thoughts :thanx:. Two follow up questions if I may:

    1) Is a Stanley knife a suitable tool for cutting the old seal out, and

    2) What element of re-fitting the screen presented a problem ?

I'm torn between taking the screen out or leaving it in, because:

    a) with the screen out access is much easier for getting the old seal out etc etc

    b) removing the screen means disturbing stuff that hasn't been messed with for years, and knowing my luck it might all go pete tong... :banghead: LOL

I'm off to the Yorkshire MVT 'Crank Up' this coming Sunday in York, so might while-away some of the time cutting away the seal and perhaps trying to gently slackening some bolts off.

    Vulture,

We did not use a knife,we used grips to pull what we could out and then a engineers pick to get the other parts out.

As i said my mate made us a profilled tool to go into the channel....that realy hepled with the clean up.

I would think (but not sure) trying to fit the new rubber with the frame in situ would be more difficult.

As regards refitting the screen, it was very tight sliding into the fixed channel on the outer frame.

  18. Hi I have done both a jeep and a GMC let me tell you the Gmc was MUCH easier. Here is how we did it.

1, purchased a length of rubber profile from Cliff Harris at Universal jeep supplies

2, removed inner windscreen frame (that took some doing) our glass was ok so nothing to change there

3, removed ALL and I mean ALL the old rubber profile (we made a shaped tool for that part)

4, (optional) removed all other fittings from frame, and wiper units

5, rubbed frame and all parts down prior to painting

6, masked glass and repainted all parts then set aside for a couple of weeks for paint to get a little harder.

7, we then fed in the new profile we needed no tools at all just some magic lubrication;) the real bonus was NOT having the

    preformed coners to worry about.

8, once happy we cut 45 degree corners and bonded them with (I think Gorilla glue, which you need water to activate)

9, refitted all the parts and put the inner frame back.....that part was a NOT simple as it seemed :(.

Take your time, its not that hard, helps if you have some help.Vulture you have seen ours at Duxford.

Its one of my pet hates, tatty window rubber....just the dodge to do now.

    Good luck.
