1. Yeah, sorry, I was supposed to reply on that forum!

Don't know if it's mounted like the one in the photo on this page?

    http://www.4wdonline.com/Mil/LandRover/LW.html

I also sent another message, and they said the holes for the antenna mounts are on the side of the truck, and the plate on the side is over some damage.

    Jack.

    Jack

    Not a problem.

Yes that would explain it an upside down one that places it much lower.

  2. I have contacted Blanchards and they said that the alternator and the distributor are in it, and the rear crossmember is a civilian one that has been put on a military chassis.

    Jack.

Must be mounted opposite way up with cable coming out the bottom then, but I would have thought it would still be visible.

Mine is like this and pushes the extended air filter up higher than the one at Blanchard'sand cannot come down as far forward. Hence my comment on EMLRA

  3. There is one other thing I have found.

I have, for example, a paper copy of Batty Sheene's biography, I can lend it io anybody and trust they will return it.

I also have a load ot Cliver Cussler and Tom Clancy novels I can do the same with.

The worst that can happen is I do not get it back.

Now the only way you can borrow my Kindle books is if I give you access to my account with password, credit card details in it. Yhere is no way that is happen, sorry folks but regardless there are things that you need to keep control of. However it seems the USA has a lending library system, so what about the rest of the world?

Which is a real PITA as I used to book share with a couple of people at work. I suppose that is the sign of progress to make people more independent or is it insular?

  4. Personally I think there will be a market for both.

I have a tablet thingy which I use for reading books. You know a novel which does not have pictures.

Mind you some of the new e-versions of novels are more expensive than the paper version. Obviously the price of pixels will take over from oil.:D

I still like having a real book for the real things (non-fiction) especially if it has lots of pictures and it is something real.

A book is much better if you need more than one or keep having to jump around pages to cross reference stuff.

More importantly when dropped on the floor the book still works.

Not only that you do not see many reports of people being mugged for the hard/paperback book they are reading at the bus stop/station.

  5. It could have been a mock up for some sort of project. Fake photo, but not necessarily a fake artifact.

Quite agree lots of things have been faked in pictures and have actually become historical and famous.

The Cottingly Fairies and the Loch Ness Monster all are now part of our history.

Not forgeting all those plywood and inflatable tanks and planes we had in WW2.

  6. Interesting one of its undercarriage legs has dropped off.

    6 propellors.

4 very small engines and 2 really big ones.Suspect it is a biysa on string.

What is that infront of the hanger on the ground?

  7.

I think you may find it has been sold.

Looks remarkably like one posted up as just bought by a member of the EMLRA forum.

At least they have almost identical paint jobs lights etc. It was a GS.

There are a few clues to not an FFR in the picture. No sign of ever having rear antenna brackets or the cable boxes on front wings.

You can see a few FFR traits on my slow resto thread here

    http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?18120-Land-Rover-Series-3-109-FFR-rolling-restoration

As for what to look for chassis and rear x-memeber and bulkhead are as you mentioned the rot areas.

Clive has some vexcellent articles on the ignition and charging side over in Clives Corner on the forum (All charged up and ignition matters)

Very useful and I would have been a bit lost without them as mine was partly butchered.

Finding parts does not seem to be a problem with most bits being readily available.

However if the truck is missing the battery box for the radio and radio table these can be very difficult to lay your hands on.

Oh and my truck runs on unleaded and as far as I am aware is a standard head.

  8. Too high for what? Getting in or out of the yards?

There is no height limit for vehicles on UK roads, but your route might need careful planning. If the yards at either end are limited you could drive it the first/last bits.

That is correct, your vehicle load can be as high as you like.

However, conversely, there are no minimum heights for bridges, trees, cable etc.

Motorway bridges are generally 5.1m clear. But check your paint layers.

  9. Hello on the 28th of July we are hosting a joint flying display/ pre 1960's car show at the Shuttleworth Collection near Biggleswade in Bedfordshire, the driver and vehicle of any pre-registered pre 1960's cars can get in free and pre-registered passengers can get in half price (£12) for more information click this link http://www.shuttleworth.org/tickets/event-details.asp?ID=201 I have been told we are trying to set aside areas for vehicle classes so I will bring along the family's Dodge WC54, Ford GPW and M3 Halftrack and try to put some of the collection's vehicles with us for a military section and it'd be great to see some of you guys and girls and your toys. Closing date for registration is 19th July and if we have weather like we had last night it'll be a great show.

Are the 2 Anson's going to be flying in formation?

That will tempt me to pop up for a visit.

Sadly can only manage a 2000 Astra 1972 Land Rover

Always enjoy my visits to Old Warden

  10. Well today I had my first flying lesson.

The most scary, terrifying and exhilarating thing I have ever done. Hats off to those who fly!

This was my first time and I have to say - how on earth did those guys who flew bombers in WWII cope with that. So much to think of and so much to do. The guys who had to deal with damaged aircraft and to make sure they got their crew home safely are men of a different world.

I cannot begin to explain the feeling of flying. Think I have at last found a new hobby :)

You think that was nerve wracking, wait till you have to go solo.

Did that in a glider (powered) when I was 16, now that was nerve wracking.

Sadly no money to keep up with it.

  11. Well, yesterday - 2 x Oshkosh rigs running unladen up the M11. Taken from a slightly smaller low loader as we dragged slowly past!

Very nice outfits - they certainly do look the part, but really should have SCAMMELL badges and mud flaps.....

The dual winches and fairleads are an interesting set-up.

And that slightly smaller rig seems to be in lane 3 of a 3 lane motorway......

Yes that looks like the Bishops Stortford turn off, but according to the sign 3 lane motorway is disputable as the inner lane is clearly defined as an off lane and the other 2 straight on and it does go off droppimg the main road down to 2 lanes through the junction and remains 2 afterwards.

Did it on the way to Duxford last month.

Possibly a slightly premature overtake, where is the traffic officer

  12. Had a busy weekend as I also went to the Dunsfold open day on Sunday.

Yes loads of Land Rovers plenty in green and sand.

So here are some pics of the more interesting ones.

This Series 1 had only left military service 2 weeks prior to the show.

It was being used by the REME as a training aid.

Another of their recent additions a R-WMIK+ with its top secret armour.

The secret of the armour was revealled during a talk. Yes it is plywood (after all it is a replica)
