  1. Richard has made an important point about swiveling the gearbox, therefore a swivel has to be factored into the lifting arrangement.

I had already though to raise the gantry off the ground further using concrete blocks. Using a wheeled gantry then the only way to shift the gearbox is to move the gantry out of the way on its wheels, which is not the correct thing to do but the only way to get the box away from the vehicle body?

I belive moving a ferret is a difficult proposition without its engine?

As Richard says its easier on a flat surface. I have removed an engine on my todd and pulled the Ferret forward on my todd as well as I didn't want to move the engine on the lifter as it was up to high and on a rough surface. A van should be able to move a Ferret from underneath the gantry. Or the other way is to grip a tyre low down and move the tyre in the direction you want to go.

  2. I can't say I know too much about some of the bigger vehicles but there is a photo on another site of a Centurion with what appears to be a V shaped wading screen in steel.

The photographer calls it a DD Centurion but I feel he is mixing terminology.

    The picture dates from 2011

    Link to photo is here

    Anyone know what it is?

It could be a DD tank it looks to have been dragged from somewhere else on the range looking at the road wheels.

  3. Thanks Clive and the whole idea is to make sure that doesn't happen. FB is great for certain things but you can't have the discussions/chats that go on here, on forums. Facebook is a very instant medium - we want to grab those across the world and bring them to HMVF. Facebook also is very picture/image driven so not major content.

So the HMVF FB page is really just going to be used as a hub to bring and point folks to HMVF.

Facebook to me anyway seems less substantial and irreverent compared to the main forum which is more formalised and structured. Facebook isn’t structured in that way it provides headline articles in the same way that 24 hour news does with a limited look back facility.

The HMVF Facebook site should be different to cater for the people who will not join a structured forum but who would be willing to join a Facebook page where they can jot a few lines down and add a like or two and move on to the next story.

My gut feeling is that you should link threads from the forum as it does now and share them into the different groups that exist in Facebook land, in that way more people will be willing to look at and maybe join the forum when they see the articles / threads.

  4. Quite simple really, does it carry a London or Birmingham Proof house mark and a certificate issued by the proof house? If not, then it is NOT De-Activated under UK law. Please bear in mind you can own it. I still own my pistols, you may not posses it! So if it's in your house, don't make any plans for the next 10 years. I'd suggest you contact your local Trading Standards office, as they are selling something not as described.

You can bet your bottom dollar that they won't be willing to serve time at HMP's pleasure for you.

  5. Trouble is, what colour and what markings do you put on it? Why not just wax the beast with a clear wax, then the buyer can do a paint by numbers on it if they want. Personally, I think a bit of wear and tear loks better on an MV.

Not going to disagree on that one but for one caveat wear and tear on your own vehicle is fine but for a vehicle your planning on selling the market wants paint and as the chassis is already painted its going to look downright odd.

  6. Frankly, as I am an information vacuum I would buy both. I tend to spend those personal moments in the reflecting room aka technical library aka smallest room in the house poring over a good manual until i'm familiar with it. It is then and only then does it go down to the library proper and onto a shelf.

Then when the need arises I have half a clue where the information might be.

Dont forget that the Sabre turret info wont be in there per say.

    Thanks Robin

I'll get the missus to buy me one of them for xmas (sorry its November and I'm mentioning that dirty word)!

  7. It's mad what it all costs but sometimes it's apart of the fun to restore it your self.

    Bill.

It is part of the fun to do it yourself. More than likely you couldn't afford to have it done by someone else and would you want too? If it breaks down and you have rebuilt the vehicle your more likely to know how to repair it.

  8. Hi Rafal,

Do you know the British Army registration if you do you can then apply to the Tank Museum for the history of the vehicle. For a fee / charge they will supply the history.

    Welcome to the forum

  9. It was clearly a major undertaking. And very likely a REME job it started life with the 28 amphibious squadron and ended its time with the Royal Logistic Corp. During the paint removal time I have gone through 13 layers and can confirm that the bumper and ladder have been on there some time. I have been advised that it may have been used for pushing when in Germany. And that it was used as a saluting base hence ladder. I await any firm sightings.

Better to keep it as it is its just different which is a damn good reason to keep it as its

FSC great fun welcome in its an exclusive club owning cold war British Armour
