  1. Was wondering if anyone out there has or knows of anyone that is restoring a BRDM-2 (9P122) Sagger ATGM launcher. I've owned mine since 96 and have only known of one other sold about the same time. I have seen lots of 9p133 vehicles in the Czech rep. and some in East Germany, but none of the ex-Israeli 9p122's. Restoration has been a slow ongoing process with limited success in obtaining parts, but it is a great looking vehicle (IMO) and that alone makes it worthwile. Anyway if someone has any info on others out there I'd be interested in hearing their story. Thanks, Richard
  2. The funny part is he's holding a Sterling calling it a Beretta whilst a Beretta is hanging on the wall right behind him! :nut:
  3. Chris, Thanks for the info. If I have a bad bevel box is there an overhaul manual available to properly assemble the unit? Rich
  4. Robin, Great pix. I always like to look at other peoples projects before I get in over my head on mine. I've got some slop in my cooling fan assy and think it's the drive coupling (#34 in your diagram). Was wondering if these are available or hard to find? Also, as long as I am going to have the back end apart might as well replace the drive belts. Since I imported my FOX back in 96 all I've had to do is replace a power steering line, so I am a little reluctant to dive into a project that may result in a summer of no driving. (of course now that I've mentioned it the next time I hit the starter it'll probably scatter parts all over the shop!) Keep us informed on the progress, Richard
  5. I agree with "griff66" what you need to treat alluminum is a conversion coating such as allodine. It penetrates the surface and helps the metal resist corrosion. Also when joining dissimilar metals (alluminum and steel) the greenish yellow pasty stuff is called "Mastinox", it is a zinc chromate paste that acts as a barrier between the two metals. Using both of these products should do the trick.
  6. Does anybody know what happened to the vehicles that were at the Museum of Military Transport in Beverley? Kind of liked that one, had sone nice displays and equipment. Last time I was there was in 96 (when I bought my FOX and BRDM).
  7. Don't know if it will help but I work on Eurocopter AS 350's and they call out for loads of the zinc chromate paste. The brand name (in the US?) for the junk is "Mastinox" more commonly known as nastynox. Comes in small tubes and a little goes a long way. Really good stuff, no dissimilar metal corrosion problems and stays paste-like forever. Hope this helps, Rich
  8. This may sound strange but I'd go for the BAC 167 Strikemaster. I've flown one a couple of times and for what it is it's great. Lots of power, excellent visibility, super simple systems, and very easy to fly. The problem with many high performance and multi engine aircraft is that the pilot becomes a systems manager, monitoring engine stats, fuel, navigation, etc. Not much time left for flying or having fun. Second is MiG-17 just because I hope to get mine flying ......someday Third is AD-5 Skyraider 18 cylinders, 15 hard points, 4 20mm cannons, how could one not like this! My father was a Navy fighter pilot and flew these (along with other aircraft) and said it was the most fun he ever had. I suppose (in the end) I like anything that burns dinosaurs at an alarming rate, goes fast, and upsets my neighbors.
  9. Ok, here goes. I spent this morning looking for some pix (since I had to work this weekend I can't think of a better use of my time). Hope you all enjoy. I'll post more as I come across them or take new ones. First of all as far as the Air Force goes only the Beech is flying right now. I am still restoring the MiG, and the Hiller's engine is sitting in a million pieces on my work bench just waiting to be reassembled. The photo of me next to the Huey is there just because I like it. Up to about 2 years ago I was director of maintenance for a Bell and Robinson helicopter service center. We had contracts to maintain the helicopter fleets for a couple of Sheriff departments. I spent many hours flying this aircraft (over my house) and waking up my neighbors. To this day it's still the most fun warbird I've flown. The rest of the photos speak for themselves.
  10. Ok,ok... I'll post some pix (from my secret hideout) but first I have to tell 007 my evil plans (in detail) so he can get away, kill me, get the girl, and save the world!
  11. Hello All! I'll try and keep this short and sweet as to not bore everyone (or sound like I'm on a 12 step program for addicts). My name is Richard Rombauer from Seattle WA. and have been collecting MV's for about 20 yrs (time flies when your having fun). Some of the toys I own: Ferret, Fox, BRDM-2 M3a1 scout car, HMMWV, Fast Attack Vehicle, Beech U8-F, MiG-17, Hiller H23C. In other words enough stuff to keep me broke and busy for the next 100 years. Always fun to talk to people with the same affliction... uh, hobby Rich
