here goes on 'windys resurection

He was bought last october 2005 from the grounds of a farm in Wiltshire where he had been sat for 10 long lonely years, forlorn & forgotten with a nylon blue sheet to protect him from the elements. He was discovered by 2 kindly GMC hunters who tracked him down & towed him to a barn in Gloucestershire.

The covers came off & the investigating began. his bodywork was sound and apart from a bit of cosmetic make up was looking pretty good.

the fuel pump was a bit jammed but after taking it off & giving it a good clean it freed up & went back on sweet which is more than i can say about the smell of 10 year old fuel.

The windscreen was a bit of a challenge untill the GMC manual was consulted & then it slotted in real smooth

the brake system needed some new parts and an overhaul, so a servo & mastercylinder were fitted & the brakes bled.

a new piece of exhaust & canvas placed over hoops meant he was ready for some tlc.

a rub down on some of the worst bits

10 am till 7pm good friday saw 'windy' being rubbed down, sanded, washed,dried & painted. The colour looked well wierd to start with and seemed to be a bright yellow/green. it still looks odd in certain light but has settled down loads.

Easter saturday back at the barn & the stencilling was done.as the paint was touch dry but still fresh i used masking tape that i had stuck to my trousers & T shirt a few times to make it less tacky. The wiper motors & blades were fitted alomg with the windscreen rubber. The canvas was then tied down properly.

all the parts were sourced & purchased before work started so once he was started it didn't take very long.

his first trip out was to a friends 40th birthday party so with a bed & loo in the back we parked 'windy' up in the friends field had a great party & didn't have far to go for a bed for the night.

so here is 'windy ' as he is today

i can see a trend here with girlfriends & wives not being interested and have just worked out why.

i reckon you have all said how boring the shows are sat around in a field talking about starter motors & tyre patterns. When in reality it is a whole weekend with wall to wall men in uniform, a plentiful supply of alcohol, a live band on an evening,dancing till the early hours, a lie in in the morning & then back to wall to wall men in uniform :wink: :wink: :lol:

e bay is a good bet,

if you go to the clothes section & then down to vintage then 1940's. there is normally loads on there.

if she gets a day dress she can wear it with a hand knit cardi, ankle socks & shoes with a pinny & head scarf, then for the evening the same dress but with a hat & fur plus seamed stockings to dress it up a bit.

this could only work for the older teenager.

a youngster can get away with the ankle socks ribbons in hair & a cardi.

kids love it,

I usually have other peoples children with me as well as my own 2. We do make then stay at home for Beltring as that is our time but they winge & moan about it like crazy.

trouble is they are older now & the oldest will be driving herself down to Beltring in the car this year, mind you when they go off to college & uni we can go back to having a grown ups time away.

as Matt said it would depend wether UK or US. A nurse is ok for both nations and fairly widely available. small sizes are always easier to get hold of as many original uniforms are 25 in waist etc.

you can go down the skirt/jacket route for both nations

civilian outfits are also fairly easy.

what vehicle have you got as it may be possible to get a uniform to go with that. We have got a bedford so I can get away with wearing my ATS uniform as a 'driver' but it also looks good for walking around.

you can get original denims for around £30.00 for trousers & £25 ish for jacket. That was the average at Beltring last year anyway. They can normally be found lurking at the back of stalls.

The war pattern was used up to the 50's so even post war should be fine.

They are much more cooler for the summer show months than the BD's

oh dear you guys,

going on the theory that many vehicles were named after memories of back home / family I thought i would name the Jimmy after my dear Husband Russ. The name that seems to stick is 'WINDY'.
