  1. Im insured with Footman James good efficient service. I was insured with Barry Grainger who proved to be less than efficient and the policy wasnt for an agreed value unless you produced an engineers report As with most of these things if it turns out to be not what you want dont renew regards Centurion

    The Police

Having spent some time in the blue suit. One of the more memorable quotes from my colleagues went something like "why did you nick him then ?" " oh he was talking when he should have been listening" :-) thank you and goodnight centurion
  3. In the early 70,s when I commenced my career with the constabulary we spent several nightshift hours in the west end of Newcastle pursuing or being pursued by a TA bloke :shake: who having got drunk in the mess, thought he would have a drive around in ferret that was handy. The damage to cars and street bollards was quite something. It only stopped when he ran out of petrol. Even then getting him out of it was not easy. Centurion

  5. I realise that all the comments relate mainly to 1940.s vehicles. So where does that put my Hotchkiss. The engine is a1940,s design but was probably built in the early 60,s and was rebuilt by the French army in 1984 :?. I run it on unleaded and put castrol octane booster/lead substitue in it and it runs fine, but am I wasting money on the additive. On a similar thread unleaded petrol contains all sorts of unfriendly chemicals and if left in the carb for a long time it evaporates and leaves some of these behind which clog up the jets. . If I park my M/cycle up for a few weeks in the winter I always turn off the fuel and run it until the carbs are MT and it stops. Best wishes for Christmas and the New year to all. regards Centurion
  6. When I repainted mine the original finish (French Army)was fairly good. I rubbed off the last coat they had put on in 1976 and underneath it was fairly sound. Once it was flatted back I sorted out the rusted areas with rust stopper covered with oxide and then put two coats of Nato green on it. The paint was oil based from R&R I used Jacks roller method which worked fine. I did most of this during last winter and the cold and damp has a horrendous effect on the paint drying :shake: You think it never will . I think that the fact that the metal was also v/cold didnt help. If your going to do it without a warm dry garage or shed I would wait until spring. It may be OK if you live in the tropical south but not here on the tundra. Good luck Centurion
  7. I got this today it may have changed by the time you open it. Please do not do this if you support a certain politician 1- Go to http://www.google.com 2- Type in Failure. 3- Read the first listing. 4- Laugh. 5- Tell everyone you can before the people at Google fix it. regards Centurion

  9. Before I retired from the Police all accidents in police vehicles were supposed to be notified to the insurers of your own private car. If you look at renewal notices and proposal forms they ask you to declare any accidents you may have had wether in your own car or not and regardless of any claim made. Wether you choose to is up to you but these days there databases are fairly well up to date and they share info. In a lot of cases they may not up your premium their checking to see how honest you are. But if you give then cause they may not meetyour claim. They want your money but arent keen on giving you any back If you had an accident outside the UK in a vehicle you didnt own and made no claim how would they find out unless you told them. Would the MOD provide insurers with driver info ? Do the MOD have insurers or do they make a declaration of deposit to say that they have enough GBP to meet any claims? regards Centurion
  10. Hi all did anyone see the trench detectives Wed 16/8. Very interesting stuff from an excavation of ww1 German trenches. Its on for the next few weeks worth watching. regrads Centurion
  11. Hi Tim I did the master cylinder on mine which wasnt too difficult. I then greased the braked pedal pivot which showed up a worn pedal and the shaft it pivots on. so here we go again. If your doing the master cylinder check out the pedal shaft etc . By the way if the inside of your master cylinder is ok I have a rebuild kit which You could have for a tenner. regards Centurion
  12. Yes I know I should have posted this elsewhere but I couldnt get it to open. Great new format but. How do I get all on my screen. It appears to big Help Centurion
  13. Thanks for that. I see how the leak develops and let you know how I get on when I set about it regards Centurion
  14. A mate of mine had the rad begin leaking on his Jeep and found it cheaper to buy a new one from Tony Suddes than it was to have his old one refurbished and repaired, Worth a thought if your stuck. Hope you get it fixed regards Centurion
  15. Hi all My jeep has developed a leak from the oil seal behind the bottom pulley. Does the pulley take much removing ( having seen Jacks GMC one disintegrate). Can I get it off without removing the radiator and having got to the oil seal is it worth removing the timing cover and replacing that gasket as well. Is there anything else I need to know or replace. regards Centurion
  16. Hi all, A short cautionary tale for those who may suffer the same. I bought my Jeep in late July last year and just got in and drove it intending to do some work on it over the winter. It had little done to it when I bought it having been released from the French Air force and then used for a time privately in france. Oil pressure etc was fine. I went to a classic car show in Scotland a return trip of 60 miles. This was obviously too much for the sump gasket which started to leak. I tightened the studs up all of which were quite loose and did little more until recently when I set out to replace the gasket. Again all the studs seemed fairly slack. Having removed them all I found that the spring washers on all but 5 of them had work hardened and were now flat washers with no hope of doing what they were supposed to do. The motor has an rebuild plate for 1984 so 22 years of compression is to much for spring washers worth considering if your nuts keep coming loose. Not suprisingly the cork sump gasket was begining to disintegrate as were the cork washers on the top and bottom of the oil filter. Regrds Centurion
  17. Hi Jack, Just thought I,d let you know. I was wondering wether to spray brush or roller my Jeep. Having seen your results I went for the roller and the finish is excellent and a lot easier than spraying. regards Centurion
  18. Better late than never. Boyer Bransden have been making electronic ignition components for some years now and sell widely to the classic bike market. I had one of their Kits on a 70,s Triumph triple. Which was a hopeless to time etc with its 3 sets of points but with the Boyer kit it started and ran fine. Centurion
  19. is this chineses six thing some sort of legionnaires disease then? Centurion
  20. Agricultural vehicles of all types seems exempt from most things unless you really know your stuff. You only have to look at the number of quads(not military gun tractors) that are used on the roads with little regard for any traffic regs. Coupled with the other ability to build almost anything that doesnt match the surrounding countryside with little or no planning permission because its use is agricultural. (oops sorry Im getting a bit wound up). Yet there is a reported case in Durham of a Guy who had a shed on his own ground housing two or thre Military vehicles. that the local party faithful decided had to come down or apply for change of use that the obviously werent going to Grant
  21. I know its on 9pm tonight but in this case its 6 March beeb2 the real Dads army. Last week they did how it was set up etc. This week one of the archiaologists off time team is doing the concrete bunkers etc which were the second line of defence after the Germans got off the beaches. Not suprisingly there all inland from the channel coast. Theres not much up here I think they preferred to go to Russia It might have been warmer than the last few days here on the tundra. cheers, Centurion
  22. Hi all Not that I have anything near the weight your talking about. But when I got my jeep I was with Green flag and they wouldnt cover it because of its age. So I switched to Brittania rescue for about £100 per year it covers me and mrs c for any vehicle we are travelling in. Im not sure about a Jimmy or Dodge but Im covered for a Nissan terrano towing a double horse/ double axle horse box . Which may not be very heavy but is quite a long rig. cheers Centurion
  23. If you think that it may have been used by the French at some stage look at Andy Carters , Andys military jeep pages. It should help you eliminate at least one possibility if nothing matches. Regards Centurion
  24. Is it ironic that the country that started this topic is probably one of those that was indirectly responsible for Horse passports. One of the reasons they were introduced was to ensure horses that had been treated with certain drugs didnt get into the food chain. Funny how these topics sort of turn in on themselves. None of ours have passports there shetlands and havnt considered leaving the GB
