  1. Took my jeep on it's first real run today. Did a 250 mile round trip to Southampton to pick up a trailer. Jeep performed superbly, trundled along quite happily at 55. Very windy coming back and pretty cold. Fuel economy was better than I expected. Usually I fill the tank and running around the town I'd have to fill it again after just over 100 miles. We did 190 today and filled up with the needle about half way between empty and 1/4. All in an enjoyable but(t) numbing day.

  2. I don't think you can get a great deal more info from an engine number. Possibly what body and chassis number it should be with. There should be a cast date on the engine, below the starter

11-15. Gives mine a cast date of 15th November. Stamped on the oil pan flange on mine was 11-18-43. I thought that was the assembly date but have since learnt that this is the milling date and the engine would have been put together anytime in the next 10 - 14 days.

    That's about all I know.

  3. I recently got hold of a Hull compass but the oil had leaked out. I've got it apart and done some repairs and am getting ready to do the re-fill. Does anyone know where I can get hold of some compass oil. I've been to the local chandlers and was greeted by a blank look and a what's that?

If I can't find any I believe I can fill it with clear baby oil.

    Any help or info appreciated.

  4. After getting my jeep on the road back in july with what I thought were small unobtrusive indicators I got a few comments about them.

Seems they stuck out too much. After a while I decided I would try to hide them a bit more.

I know some people turn the black out marker lights into indicators, but I wanted to keep all the lights working as they're meant to.

So here's what I came up with. I got some small 5volt Orange bulbs and added a resistor so they'd work off 12volt.

Next was a simple solder together and mount them in the back of the marker light doors.

All I had to do then was drill a small hole in the bottom of the marker light body and fit them and wire them up. They are surprisingly bright once done.

Opinions :?: I think they look much better and you have to look pretty close to spot them. More pictures here

  5. I had a trip to Malvern. Quite a good event but possibly the coldest place on earth! Went looking for a Jeep trailer hoping that Galliers might have taken at least one with them. No such luck. Only saw one trailer there but thought it was a bit over priced.

So after a 3.5 hour drive each way I ended up getting a couple of bits from Tony Sudds who lives 30 mins up the road from me

A good day out none the less. I looked out for the HMVF badges but I don't think I stood still long enough. Too cold

  6. The meeting was at beltring 02. Just walking around the stalls and this fella started talking to my mates kid about his gun(toy). After a little while we noticed a stall with a book about him. We duly bought a copy had it signed and went on our way. It's only afterwards that you realise what incredible things this unasuming man, and many more like him, did.

That pretty much decided the theme for the jeep if I ever could afford one. Plus they're a smart looking bunch :)

Luckily 2 years later I got lucky and found an affordable jeep. The following year was expensive though!
