  1. Interesting that the 'Dark Side' took its inspiration from the Sperry ball turret . . . and not the Beaverette.
  2. And here is another phase of ball-gunner training <https://www.facebook.com/planehistoria>
  3. The link has some great images. If I had looked a little closer at this picture - rather than being seduced by the turret images - I think I could probably have answered my own question. Good to see the risk assessment meant the jeep carrying the target was unmanned whilst traversing the range!
  4. Thank you for both helpful replies. The absence of fitted armour certainly suggested a role short of combat. Do we know if these trucks were stationary; or were they used as mobile training platforms in some enormous and unpopulated desert? As the article notes, the shotgun training vehicle was used on-the-move: but this would seem less likely for the twin MG turret. As an aside, the Sperry-trainer must have been something of a challenge! All the best and thanks again. A
  5. This image appeared on FB. Not a Beaverette but an interesting mod. Does anyone know for what specific purpose these vehicles were developed?
  6. 'I need a set for my Chieftain': such a great line! I salute you! All the best. A
  7. Morning Ron. I guess this is the two-wheel version of the Beaverette: a needs must development. I wonder in what manner the builder of the replica notified his insurer of the modifications?
  8. Re: the caption under the first image on the magazine page, here is a Nazi vehicle in the 'Pill-Box' role. I think they may have given the concept a little more thought...
  9. And I though kick starting the elastico 3HW was a challenge! Thanks for the additional images. A
  10. Thanks Lex. Stunning! What are we guessing for the all-up weight? A
  11. Morning all. Does anyone have any additional images of this monster? In particular, how was the armour stowed when not acting as 'cover from fire'? All the best. A
  12. Most images of Scorpion taken during the war show crew wearing the Dan Dare helmet. (<https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205188148>)
  13. I came across this image from '82. I am very familiar with the Dan Dare helmet: but what is the commander of the Scorpion wearing? I am guessing an AAC Bone Dome? (Image from IWM <https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205189462>)
  14. Some interesting pictures (and narrative . . .) at <https://www.facebook.com/groups/367632986662004/?hoisted_section_header_type=recently_seen&multi_permalinks=7147803888644846> Posted by Michael Rowley.
  15. Another example of a concrete mine (with a somewhat different purpose). German Stock-Mine 43 consists of a small hollow concrete cylinder, made of weak cement mortar composition containing a shrapnel filling. An explosive charge of about 3.5oz was contained by the concrete cylinder, and the mine was mounted on a stake that was set in the ground. <https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30019953#:~:text=mine the German Stock-Mine,was set in the ground.>
  16. I am clearly well out of touch with retail prices for concrete-encased in steel; but here are a couple of optimists at work . . . On the upside, yours still has the carrying handle (uncomfortable thing that it is). All the best. A
  17. Morning. There are some additional photos and details on this post: < >
  18. As an aside: does anyone know the name of the font?
  19. I think this is quite an early version of the cutter pouch. Contract number SURV/416. The date of manufacture is given as 05/10. Flying kit stores reference. Later version - but undated - also shown.
  20. Not my thing at all: but I can see the similarity. All the best. A
