thread started...must add militants to my list of cold war museum vehicles must haves...
  3. Okay after a bit of interest I have decided to start a new thread detailing the process we are going through to get to the 1st May open day. List of things to sort, the site needs hardstandings and space for the tentage that we are going to use initially. the main marquee will be purchased in the new year but will be the main hall effectively, with a load of 18X 48 tents lined up for displays etc... i have to relocate all the vehicles plus i have to tidy them up. the volunteers will slowly be allocated work as we get them in Neil the volunteers co-ordinator and document-or of the museum items is starting tomorrow to document everything we have that is museum, from the bombs and shells to the guns the tanks the APC's the tyres and every thing else we have...some items will be sold to build up the kitty going forward. that brings me nicely onto money:- Anyone wishing to make donations will be most welcome to do so, I know unlikely but I have to start asking apparently...anyone wishing to loan vehicles for the displays etc are always welcome, anyone wishing to store their vehicles here is welcome, (some under cover some may be out in the open...all open to discussion at the moment. Any storage cash will go to the museum...direct. So first plan major task is to get documenting things and alongside, get running the important road worthy vehicles for weddings and events to try and generate income... We have a few key volunteers already and that has already helped no end. I now see how important you chaps are. I have to admire and thank everyone who gives up their time to come and help us build this museum. I am hoping it will be my legacy to the country...I hope to set it up such that it never has to worry about enough money coming in to stay in business..we will see, I have a lot to do...

Ah good idea will start one, I use the Facebook page mostly but I know a lot on here do not I will start a building the museum thread.
  5. Okay the boys were off to collect a small 24 volt geny from Near Whitby that I was planning on using to jump start the trucks when they are away from mains power plus a mobile home ready for the volunteers to overnight in. Long journey I know but its also an involved story, not for on here for now. Anyway they have broken down, the drive shaft carrier bearing has failed, I bet it has not been greased for an age. I was under there today and never noticed any problem with it. They are stuck just off the motorway and awaiting a repair from A.E. Wilson who will try to source the bearing tomorrow and fix it...then the boys can carry on their journey...here's hoping all will be okay.

driving is not essential but important, if he has lost his licence then we can sort that over time and training will be given to get him up to C+E and tracked class. he needs to be good with spanners and old vehicles welding and electrics.. etc

Sadly after a false start we are back in the market for a full time engineer mechanic etc. No joy has come from the numerous parties, we had one guy start then sadly change his mind. This was disappointing but understandable. SO if anyone wants a full time job away from the madding crowd working in the new Museum please get in touch. first job is get the chieftain tidied up..then build the marquees and tents for the museum...although we will start that in the coming weeks.
  14. hmm be nice to see where they are being worked on and go and have a look...
  15. hi john, do you think its the pump as it does run fine for about 10 minutes but then starts to run rough and keeps running rough...we will check the pump but it seems odd that it literally runs fine then starts to run rough...
  16. so we have been having one or two issues with the old girl..we turn up she fires up lovely and runs for a few minutes drives okay and all is fine, then she starts to run rough with limited power. suspicion is fuel supply...we fill her up and she runs fine for a few minutes then starts to run rough. we suspect the fuel filters blocked or getting blocked but finding the thing isn't easy and my manuals are in the other office... so can anyone enlighten me as to where the fuel filter should be...is it the filter on the rear bulkhead where the batteries and hydraulic pumps reside...we are hoping it is as its a pig to get to but manageable but we don't want to take it off if it isnt,
  17. they are buying a lot of stuff...
  18. I can house all the cold war vehicles in my museum...

    Still looking guys
  20. Still amazing prices. I just hope that this does not eventually price out the poorer museums out there, who are trying to build a historical record of the period through the displaying of typical vehicles and other paraphernalia. Hopefully some of these special machines will find their way into collections on loan for instance. I have already had a few offers of loan vehicles for the Cold War Museum, and once we are properly set up i will certainly be accepting all such offers.
  21. ROlfe my new man starts this month. priority 1 for the museum is the cheiftain looking at least reasonable, so that is going to progress. my machine seems to have spent most of its time doing nothing as apart from rust everything looks not too bad. Its just the boxes I need, the front two off side and and maybe a new long one at the back if we cannot restore the current bent one. thats interesting to know re the parts...
  22. know how you feel. I would like to get there more often, and maybe get one or two of the old aircraft at my museum one day. but they would have to be transported or flown to lasham for dismantling and reassembling here, lasham is only 3 miles or so away... hoping to have a jaguar and a Harrier at the museum on the open day... sorry for going off topic guys...
  23. ooh just noticed your a member of duxford, me too, I buy loads of your second hand books for my library.
  24. its such a difficult question, by way of tanks it has to be the T34, simple effective and way ahead of anything else on the battle field at the time, ultimate tank, toss up between challenger 2 and leopard 2, best APC, now that is difficult, 432 classic easy to drive fast enough and strong enough, ot90 and BMP fantastic machines plenty of power and go like stink...not the best protection in the world, and I could go on and on, JCB 360 great machine, take your pick on size...i have js130 superb machine has been working for me nearly every day of its 10 years or so with me...she is getting old now and ready for a new one, will likely go for a slightly bigger one next time.
